'10', I love your posts, they always make me smile or laugh out loud. When I go shopping tomorrow I'm going to buy some Branston beans and do a fry up Saturday morning!

You've forgotten the beans beanoir. With a name like that how could you ? I'm a Heinz loyalist but like 10 says these Branston upstarts do have their merits. I think the mouse is a bit too generic personally. I did think about nominating the ZX Spectrum but didn't for the same reason. Best thread of the year this. I feel like I'm getting to know some of you.

Beans is a good call, I was waiting for the brand to be decided before it could graduate to the list, if I have my vote its Heinz too, i've got 4 tins of Branston ones in my cupboard that haven't been touched.

I'd agree with the Atari call if the rubber covering the joystick stick didn't keep coming off when I was attemping to beat my mum's high score in pacman.

Never did beat it, so that's my excuse, and one i'm sticking with.

Music is too subjective - the thread then just becomes a list of what people like.
The products listed need to be pretty much beyond dispute. Is anyone seriously going to say that Maglites are ***** - no. Everyone who has used one will agree that it is a wonderful product - totally fit for purpose and of undisputed quality.
I don't like Converse Allstar (make my feet look too long and thin) but I can set that opinion aside and appreciate that the product itself is a timeless classic, well designed, does what it should perfectly and has transcended passing trends with ease.
Volkswagen is an interesting one - the original air cooled VW Beetle (my first car) has a real case for inclusion. Anyone want to make that case ??

Love them or hate them (I'm in the first camp, had a couple) you can't deny their worldwide presence and instant recognisability. Everyone knows what a VW Beetle looks like. They were in production for 60-odd years and I believe, the world's second-most produced car after the Toyota Corolla, which doesn't count by the way, because there are 80 zillion different types and nobody knows what any of them look like.

Beetle please. If you hate Beetles tough s**t, I hate baked beans and I'm not complaining :p

Excellent case well made. In Warren's absence I'll take the responsibility and add this to "The List". He can delete it if it doesn't deserve to be there but I'm convinced personally.

Just in case the Beetle's position is in any way shaky, I'd like to reinforce the quality engineering side of things. We all may laugh at it now but for it's time it was a revolutionary bit of design, but also strong and simple. With basic maintenance (and in some countries a ton of rustproofing) they go on for ever. Damn, I'm talking myself into wanting another one :beee:

And the baked beanz should be Heinz, if anything. I know a good case was made for Branston but even a Yank knows what Heinz beanz are :yes:

Not saying it isnt a great tool, but Ive worked in Engineering for 19yrs and I dont even know if I have seen one.

Also Ive eaten toast for the last 35yr and have never heard of a Dualit?

BUT even though I have never burgled a house, or used a Maglite before, I know what one looks likes and that it is a legendary bit of kit.

Not suggesting list inclusion requires an entry to be a household name, however can it be on `The list` and be obscure at the same time?

Anyhoo, as its Friday, what about Newcastle Brown Ale?? Its not just any old beer, and you can walk into a bar just about anywhere on the planet and they will have `Broon` for sale.

Stanley Knife, or whatever they're called elsewhere.

EVERYONE knows what they are, EVERYONE has used one, and EVERY ONE of them looks pretty much as they did when they first arrived on the scene, apart from the odd ergonomic change.

Think it meets every one of the criteria for 'the list'.
 
And not just because I'm a trendy fanboy in skinny jeans and a p***pot helmet (I'm not) how about the Vespa scooter? They are automatic now, and some of them are cooled by water and absolutely huge, but the basic design is the same i.e engine/transmission/rear wheel all together under the rider's ****, and a pressed metal body for the structure instead of a tubular frame...fairly unique/ubiquitous/universally recognised, don'cha think?

I agree that a Stanley Knife meets most of the criteria but it's not exactly a difficult design, it's just that they made the first/cheapest/most durable (whichever!) and it became a household name. I don't think that instantly allows it on the same list as the others, especially as most of their other stuff it crap. Looking at the rest of the list every other brand makes all good stuff and there's one bit of kit in particular that excels.
 
Dyson vacuum anyone? Sure it wasnt the first vacuum or even the first bagless one but most people who have ever had one know how easy to use and what a great design they are, also the customer service on them is pretty good, no fannying around. :)

...and a torch/toaster/converse trainer/baked bean are difficult designs??

I think the fact that, 1) Stanley Knife has become a household name and 2) no matter which other manufacturer makes it, they are pretty much all referred to as a "Stanley knife" should cement it's place.
Other than Hoover and Coke I can't think of anything else that has managed this, and even with those two we all know they are really a vacuum cleaner and a cola drink. But can you give me the proper name for a Stanley Knife?? "Retractable cutting implement"?? "Sharp thing to cut up boxes that will take off your finger tips if you're not careful"??
I can't think of many other brands that have achieved this.

Also, other than Baked beans and VW there isn't another item on the list that is as well known or as widely used as the good ol' Stanley knife.
I mean lets be honest, how many people can picture off the top of their heads a Dualit 4 slice toaster, or a Nikon D3X D-SLR camera, or a Leatherman??

Actually the `Thermos` is worthy is it not?

Elegant design, household name, evolved little since conception with repeatable performance.

If its to make it on the list then IMO it should be pretty well known if not a household name.

I was thinking of the GM/Chevrolet 'small block' V8 engine as well. Been in a very lot of vehicles (not just cars) since 1955 and the bones are pretty much the same...but it's not a 'household' name like Stanley knife, Thermos flask, VW Beetle et al.

Can't argue with either of those really. And for me a lot more worthy of being on the list than a Nikon ABCDEFGHIJK123456789 camera (or whatever it's called), or a Ducati (??) toaster!!
Even though I don't know how well one browns bread and the other takes photos, i'm not doubting how great they are; but in terms of being "iconic" and having their own little place in most people's lives I would definitely put Stanley knife, Thermos, and Tannoy before those two.

if your a greasy brekky man branstons are nice ...i love hienz and dont eat any others but last week i went to my moms she done me one big greasy donjay and it hit the spot so hard ...the beans were awesome ..hoo har

That takes me back...to really hurting myself as a kid. I hated that bike, every time I tried to do anything a bit fancy the 11 tons of bike would automatically smash to the floor creating a massive crater and trapping a very skinny 9-year old under it until mountain rescue came.

Horrible bicycle- luckily mine only cost me 2 Sinclair Spectrum games as a swapsie - my m8's mum gave him a right kicking for swapping his bike but I think he got the better deal to be honest

I think the Stanley knife covers of form and function. It's not an exceptional piece of design, but it's not had to evolve much since its introduction, and is one of those special cases where the brand name covers the product name (a la Hoover etc.).

Old skool Beetle HAS to be on there.

And Dark Side of the Moon is definitely an iconic album.

Whilst I love the Chopper bike, having never owned one, is at actually any good at what it does. THere is a fashion icon; of it's time, but unless its perfectly formed these things pass by. The fact they are still being SOLD today can often be a good measure of how iconic it is. The hard part is knowing whether the latest or earliest incarnation is the classic. I guess it depends on how it integrates new ideas on top of the original concept, and how successfully.

I think 10Blazin's posts are dangerously close to making it onto the list because no matter how dark or painful a thread can get, he ALWAYS makes you laugh and realise things aren't so bad. Player!
