You've forgotten the beans beanoir. With a name like that how could you ? I'm a Heinz loyalist but like 10 says these Branston upstarts do have their merits. I think the mouse is a bit too generic personally. I did think about nominating the ZX Spectrum but didn't for the same reason. Best thread of the year this. I feel like I'm getting to know some of you.
Beans is a good call, I was waiting for the brand to be decided before it could graduate to the list, if I have my vote its Heinz too, i've got 4 tins of Branston ones in my cupboard that haven't been touched.
ok, how about the original Atari instead of the mouse?

S3 or Cayman? Mmmmm......
I thought the whole point of The List was to find brands that fulfilled all those credentials rather than simply an iconic item. The computer mouse has to go
Volkswagen. Even little green men from Mars know what that logo means
Imortalised in music by the Beatsie Boys....Err.
Volkswagen is an interesting one - the original air cooled VW Beetle (my first car) has a real case for inclusion. Anyone want to make that case ??
Nice one Paul, liking your tastes. Just needs updating with something current, like Tiesto (Trance/Prog FTW). Can't see how music would fit in though.Imortalised in music by the Beatsie Boys....Err.
Talking of music, should Darkside of the Moon not be on the list? And Blue Lines, and Stone Roses (self titled)....?
Am I of topic off topic?
Me! In one word...icon.
Love them or hate them (I'm in the first camp, had a couple) you can't deny their worldwide presence and instant recognisability. Everyone knows what a VW Beetle looks like. They were in production for 60-odd years and I believe, the world's second-most produced car after the Toyota Corolla, which doesn't count by the way, because there are 80 zillion different types and nobody knows what any of them look like.
Stanley Knife, or whatever they're called elsewhere.
EVERYONE knows what they are, EVERYONE has used one, and EVERY ONE of them looks pretty much as they did when they first arrived on the scene, apart from the odd ergonomic change.
Think it meets every one of the criteria for 'the list'.
I agree that a Stanley Knife meets most of the criteria but it's not exactly a difficult design, it's just that they made the first/cheapest/most durable (whichever!) and it became a household name. I don't think that instantly allows it on the same list as the others, especially as most of their other stuff it crap. Looking at the rest of the list every other brand makes all good stuff and there's one bit of kit in particular that excels.
...and a torch/toaster/converse trainer/baked bean are difficult designs??
I think the fact that, 1) Stanley Knife has become a household name and 2) no matter which other manufacturer makes it, they are pretty much all referred to as a "Stanley knife" should cement it's place.
Other than Hoover and Coke I can't think of anything else that has managed this, and even with those two we all know they are really a vacuum cleaner and a cola drink. But can you give me the proper name for a Stanley Knife?? "Retractable cutting implement"?? "Sharp thing to cut up boxes that will take off your finger tips if you're not careful"??
I can't think of many other brands that have achieved this.
I can't.
2 more...
-Tannoy (PA system really, but who calls it that?)
-Thermos (Vaccuum flask really, but who calls it that?)

what about ipod gota be in there ....
mobile phone
1 ton in weight grifter anyone ......lol
...I mean lets be honest, how many people can picture off the top of their heads a Dualit 4 slice toaster, or a Nikon D3X D-SLR camera, or a Leatherman?? I can't.
