I'm off to educate myself on Google! I'm afraid it stretches way beyond the grasp of my socio-political awareness.

This thread has almost become like the cool wall or gadget show wall of fame.

Can it be stretched to 10 legendary items, I'm almost disappointed to say that after 2000 years of the evolution cycle I'm struggling to justify many more.

Is the Victorinox Swiss Army knife one, or is it too compromised by lack of locking blades and size of tools?
 
I think the Swiss Army knife does qualify. Some of it is pretty useless...until you need it. The basic design has certainly been around a long time :o.k:
 
SAKs aren't useful enough. A far better multi-tool is a Gerber, Leatherman or SOG.

I've had a Leatherman Wave for about 10 years and it's served me fantastically. It's got burnt plastic on one blade, the cutting edge has a burr from where I making a table from Hesco and there are scorch marks on the side where I welded it to a piece of wire (and to my thumb) when I was doing some fault finding. Still does the job.

As I'm a fairweather monkey when it comes to doing 'stuff', I've rarely needed beyond the micro tools on offer, but I've never asked 'man sized' tasks of it. It has an iconic nature to it's design, but I'm very happy to conceded others have evolved the product on. So is the Leatherman or the Gerber better? I'm not qualified to comment I'm afraid.

Did the Converse or the Adi Samba take the shoe crown?

Iconic design most definately and I'm sure more people have owned one of them than anything else but it doesn't compare to what's on offer elsewhere in terms of functionality so I don't think it could be put up there.

Never owned a Gerber so no idea. A SOG tool came top of a Gadget Show test recently so I guess they must be pretty good. Personally I would buy another Leatherman but that doesn't mean it should go on the list!

Maybe not as iconic as Cons/Samba etc but they certainly standing the test of time.

Yeah you may not agree now but I'll tell you this; there would be a lot less aching arms almost producing drowned babies if they became a legal requirement.

Ok, granted... not much use if you don't have a baby. Or a bath.
 
I put a tentative vote in for the Honda Cub moped as well :laugh:

Not glamourous, not fast, you definately won't pull a bird on one (not in Europe anyway) but they have made squillions (more than VW Beetles I think) haven't really changed it since the 60s and in certain parts of the world it's the equivalent of the family MPV.

Funny, I'd forgotten about these. Hmmm, I guess they haven't been identified immediately is an endorsement that they don't have the star quality? Tough call.

Cayman or 911? 911 has been with us since.... 1964...ish. But the Cayman is a truer evolution of the 911 than perhaps the current 911 is. Again, having owned neither I'm trying to base my personal opinion around the fact it exists today, will do so in 25 years, and builds on the original spark of greatness. The Cayman does look good for it.

Leatherman for me. The first was 'found before it was lost' about two years ago but had served me well for around 10 years, so I got one me the new Wave and multi-bit attachment kit.

Converse for me. Although I concede the Adidas are iconic and timeless in equal measure. Just depends if you were a 'casual' or an indie 'skater boi'. ;)

Boobs must be in the Hall of Fame.

As effective as a tool as they are a toy.

Whilst I do agree with your suggestion of boobs, I am slightly torn between them and bums. The female variety that is.

I've often asked myself... am I a boobs or bum man? And the only way I have been able to come close to any sort of conclusion is by asking myself the following:

Do I feel more excited seeing a perfect set of boobs or a perfect bottom.
The answer, for me, is bottom.

Now stick a couple nipples on a bum and we'd have the best of both worlds. The perfect cocktail.

Can bottoms with nipples be added to the list?

Leathermans are nice but a bit pricey and small (I have fat clumsy hands), I still have a Gerber I got from a Iraq in 2004 it goes everywhere, handy things to have in a car or if youre out and about.

Google 'Gerber Diesel' very gucci little things... :)

Hmmm, I'll try, but feel free to make suggestions / changes if it needs changes:

CRITERIA

1) Product should have a history or some longevity to it. It should ideally have been around for at least 5 or so years to prove it has staying power, and has subsequently evolved over time into something pretty much INSTANTLY recognizable AND respected. It should still be in production today (unlike compact cassette for instance which is all but dead even in new Audi dashboards!).

2) It should be attainable at some level (without having to sell vital organs or your children for scientific experiments). I know this is an area where your financial circumstances will determine what you consider the 'value factor', but in the main if it is a volume item then it's game

3) It should be inherently useful to anyone

4) It should preferably be 'designed' as opposed to 'made'

5) You shouldn't choose a product because you are a brand fan (like me with Apple products), but because you believe they are intelligently and well engineered, not over complex to use / utilise, can weather the demands of time and fashion (not just of the moment) and have great back up and a brand you know you can rely on! Adding this dimension should hopefully sort the wheat from the chaff!

Maybe the RS2. It's definately a quality product and started the uber-estate genre, which Audi has made it's own. It's an Audi I'd love to own :faint:

Still the 911! I'd agree with the point that the Cayman is more the spiritual successor to the original, but a 911 is a 911. It's those diddy back seats which make it a different proposition, a family man's supercar if you like, as long as your family has short legs in the back and doesn't need to bring a lot of stuff. Daily drivable and reliable...want one too :yes:

And boobs are a matter of taste. There's too many variables. I like lots of different ones, but not all at the same time. :p

I think it's too transitional. Stuff like the Sony Walkman can rightly be considered an icon, but nobody uses tapes any more :notme:

Harley-Davidsons? I know they're s**t but the same basic design hasn't changed and is recognised by pirates the world over, and seen parked outside gay bars from Sydney to Reykjavik. They've just put more chrome and stuff on them to appeal to dentists and accountants who like to dress as pirates and sneer at other two-wheeled road users on dry Sundays only. :aggressive:

I did consider moving the thread but thought you might prefer that I left some part of it in the 8P forum for others to see and provide a link to the new one I created for you to carry-on with your discussions.

I'm not sure if they two threads can be merged at this stage but if you would prefer that then I will see if it can be done. Personally I still think it's better to leave some part of it in the 8P forum and provide a link to the new one. At least 8P members will see that it exists and link to the new one if they want to contribute.

As for 'iggu's comments...

Most members are quite happy to accept they have 'broken the rules' and accept a polite PM asking them to think about the lazy way they type and change their ways.

We let members 'get away' with all sorts of things that would not be allowed on some other forums. All I can say is if you don't like the way ASN is run then may I suggest you go elsewhere....

This is a serious suggestion - how about baked beans ? Consider the longevity, the simplicity of design, the universal attainability, the undeniable value for money and the way you can always rely on them 100% to deliver satisfaction every time.
I'm a Heinz man myself but I'm willing to give the nod to Branston if necessary. Not HP though. HP Beans are all wrong.

I'm in for beans. Apart from being a great product they're totally consistent, iconic enough for the tin to have been painted by Warhol, a component of a sketch of the Cowboy farting scene in Blazing Saddles, and the reason I learned to say the slogan 'Pull my finger'. I'm with Heinz too.

if we want to consider an iconic technology product then may I suggest this, the first "mouse"...thoughts?

Whilst Apple didn't invent the Mouse, they are responsible for bringing it to the mainstream, and I reckon this fits the criteria.

Hmmm, the car could well be out based on a forum related technicality :happy:

I think it was decided somewhere that whilst the Swiss Army Knife was iconic in design it wasn't a 'serious' tool for man-sized usage.

Ref the mouse, it's a very fair point, it changed the face of computing, and it's still with us today. Is the original iconic, or is the new 2009 one the evolution:
