£1600 - multi function steering wheel + RNS-E (inc fitting) - worth it?

to be installed in a 05' 2.0 TDI S line DSG

considering spending £1600 including fitting to get
http://www.vwcruise.com/9.html - audi build in sat nav / driver information system (with bluetooth mobile phone compatabillity)

would probably go for the flat bottom, as i prefer the shape, not that bothered that it will actually be in a TDI 2.0 dsg
any thoughts??

i do really like the shape of the S3 wheel and hate leaning over when im driving (so used to having a MFSW)

Have to agree! thats silly money, Tomtoms these days are better than ever for £100 quid! Althought the wheel does look great, can you really not be ***** to move your hand 6 inches to change the volume?

I'd spend the 1600 on a weekend to remember in Amsterdam!

If it was just volume then I'd also agree but as its the whole package its worthwhile to most, but vwcruise are very expensive, but I'm sure I can sort it for him for less or add other options for that pirce, cause rns from audi alone is 2k, so stick that, wheel & BT in plus add the SDS & thats worthwhile tbh, the phone option in rns is perfect for me, plus the SD slots for my tunes, none of these poxy ipod kits everywhere, for me its been well worth the cost overall.

i would love to do both of these upgrades but not sure i can justify spending almost 2grand on two interior modifications atm..would be very nice though, do you think these two mods would increase the resale value of the car, as you would essentialy be upgrading the spec? if so how much by would you estimate?

It will hardly increase the resale value at all. It might make it more desirable and therefore easier to sell but you'll never get your money back for them.

With some careful Ebaying and shopping around you can both for WAY less than 2k though.

I would agree with this, you would be better of removing the parts when you sell the car and selling them separately.

New to all this and have just picked up on this thread. I have just got an A3 3.2 dsg 2006 and was looking at doing similar to what has been mentioned above, upgrading the stereo to the rns-e and putting in a flat bottom wheel. The current wheel isn't multi function however can this be enabled?

What sort of price should I pay for this mod? Should I try and pick up a wheel on e-bay? and an rns and then get somebody who has a little more knowledge to instal for me or is there a better more cost effective way out there?

What should the cost be? Have seen wheels on ebay.de for about £400 and rns-e from lituania for £250....

Any pointers greatly recieved....

Totally agree with you there Nigel , also as said they are the Two mods that you can always take back off and sell for as near to what you paid for them.

I also think they are the Two mods that make the biggest interior cosmetic difference , and should be on the top of the list.

When i took my Rns-e out the other day and put the old steering wheel back in i truly felt like i had gone back in time.

Apart from buckets , which also hold there money , its a no brainer ... for me anyway, lets face it the flat bottom steering wheel is becoming the norm on most premium Audi's and the reason why ? it make's the standard one look and feel like a bus , no offence intended !

It all depends what you want from the car, the best interior mods I did to my previous A3 was the sat nav and the FBMFSW and they were well worth the money I paid
not really when you add up the cost sat nav £500, steering wheel £500, steering ecu £100, slip ring £50, looms £30, plus labour

Theres nothing wrong with a bus steering wheel, i prefer to call it a coach rather than bus

RNSE + FBMFSW+ BT makes a fantastic difference the the cabin.
Both in looks and functionality.

My last car had none of these, current one does and its a world apart from my perspective.
RNSE is MMI and NAV, so its not just a fancy map.
MUCH more than an aftermarket stick-on-the-screen thingmy. Which IMO look crap anyway.
You will probably use the MMI/BT/FBMFSW features more than the NAV function anyway.

Whether its all worth £1600 is another thing however if you get NHN to fit it, you can save a bit cash on the install and still recover a chunk of the costs if you decide to remove the retrofitted bits and sell on seperately.

Unless you sell the car private at a later date with the upgraded bits still in pace, and you WILL realise a better resale value on the car. Fact, I know this from experience.

Of course you wont recover the whole cost of the upgrades, but thats the price the enthuiiast pays for his hobby.

FBMFSW are nether sporty or particular ergonomic.

But they look great!
I seriously couldnt do without my Flat Bottomed bling wheel now.

Multifunction and blue teeth are very useful, I agree. I drove my sister-in laws' Corolla yesterday and beeped the horn instead of turning the radio up, duuuuuh.

RNSE is worth having, but 1600 notes is a rip. I'd go with the Nigel option, save some $$$, and know that it was done by someone who actually cares about your car.

Still not convinced by all this flat bottom business bottoms should be round

Yes it can work, there maybe a requirement to swap 2 modules over, but can check nearer the time, you can call up audi & ask them with your vin what part numbers are on your car now, ask them which slip ring number & also which steering wheel control module number are installed currently, then we can see if this will save you nearly 200 notes if bought new.

£1600 is a tad ott for those mods, but as I said originally its not £1600 just for the rns is it, its supplying & fitment of rns & wheel, those 2 alone are 1k or more normally, lets be factual before commenting, also considering audi charge 2k just for the rns supplied not fitted, then if we compare the 2 then its a better deal overall, but can be done for less than £1600 for sure.

And people who can't get finance

I prefer to own my cars tbh, finance means its never yours & still have this weight on your mind about having to pay someone for the car all the time, of course there are tax benefits to certain options of lease, HP etc, but personally not having someone chasing me every month for a chunk of my earnings is a load of my mind, dont know about everyone else, its worthless sitting in the bank aswell anyway.

Yeah we lose on our purchases anyway, but hey thats life, anyway I do mods for my own enjoyment, not to make money so I expect lower value after years of use.
