My Alpine doesn't switch off when i pull the key out of the ignition or even switch the engine off, any idea how to wire it up so it does?

Many Thanks

Mine was being a pain then i noticed i had to swap the power wires over out the back of the stereo. Swapped the yellow-to-red and the red-to-yellow and it sorted it. By swap i mean i cut both wires in half and then made to red&yellow combinations. it might work for you it might not but it did for me...

with the alpine all you have to do is swap the bullet wires to red yellow / yellow red

Depends on the year of your A3. Early ones have both perm live & ignition on feeds, later models (around 2000) use the CANBUS to tell the HU when the keys are in the ignition. So you either wire in your own ignition on feed from the Radio S-Kont fuse (if you have one), or you'll need a CANBUS emulator as said above.
You can easily tell, just look at the black power ISO plug on the back of the HU and if it has a yellow wire with a red stripe going to the pin 2 along from the brown earth lead then you don't have a CANBUS controlled HU. However from what you describe it sounds like this wire is missing, as even if you had them round the wrong way you'd still get the HU to switch off with the ignition, but you'd just lose all your presets.

Many thanks for you input guys, much apreciated.
AndyMac, it's a 2002 model and i just bought some wiring to go from the aftermarket HU to factory wiring.

The can-bus adapter sounds good but for £50 for a bit of plastic, i think i'll just carry on turning the HU off manually at petrol stations!!! :)

been a while but i have finally decided to sort this wiring out as i found that my HU is killing my battery which may be related to this issue or something completely different like the amplified aerial adapter.

But AndyMac i have teh wiring here in front of my and i have no yellow wire with red stripe coming out of iso plug.
Also i have the Alpine X100 HU with amplified aearial adapter running off rear (remote i think) amp wire.

I think i'm gonna check the instructions out to see if there's anything wrong with my wiring!!

help greatly apreciated

You got an amplified aerial adapter as in antenna for radio, if this is wired as live permanently then this will kill the battery anyway, need to switch this via ignition/radio mate for one thing anyway, as for head unit, sure there's few ways to do it, but I'll let andy deal with that as he would have answer straight away for yer, if he doesnt reply then I'll check it but he's usually spot on.

Hey thanks for reply,
i have the amp for attenna connected to remote turn-on which is daisy changed to run rear amplified speakers too.

Also i have all my settings saved fyi.

also just noticed why i had to use the remote turn-on currently used for powering rear speakers via standard amp, it's becuase the power ant (blue) wire going from iso connector from HU is not included on the wire harness.
So should i really get a better wire harness which includes this wire so that i don't have to run the adapter and also could this be why i'm killing battery?

If it's an 02 model then it's CANBUS so no, you won't have a yellow/red stripe ignition on feed. Sounds like you're running the antenna adapter and the rear amp from the perm live in which case neither of them will ever turn off, so yes this will kill your battery pretty quickly. Post a pic of your wiring!

Yes i have 02 model, i have the antenna adapter running off the rear speakers via amp remote turn-on (blue/white) wire.

Pics coming in abit

Also looks looks as though the power antenna (blue) wire is missing from wiring harness as i have one coming from HU iso connector

Yes no help at all really. The PC9-401 harness should have a red connector which plugs into the Audi loom, the other end of the red connector should have 2 RCA plugs and a blue remote on flying lead. The RCA's plug into the rear RCA's on your Alpine and the blue flying lead connects to the blue/white flying lead on the Alpine which is the power antenna trigger. You also connect the other blue flying lead from the antenna amp to the same point. If you have a harness on the Alpine as well then you really don't need the other part of the adapter, just cut the yellow wire on the Alpine harness and join it to the red wire on the same harness and then plug this straight into the Audi harness. The only feeds you need on this harness are earth and permanent live. The brown front speaker ISO plugs straight into the Alpine speaker harness and the rear feed is provided by the rear RCA's via the red adapter. Then all the blue flying leads connect together. Sounds & looks like you have the wrong adapter as I can't see any RCA's in the pic.

ok that kinda makes sense but i've taken some better pics now so hopefully you can see enough detail to confirm what wires needs plugging in where.

Yes you need the PC9-404 adapter:
http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/view_product.php?partno=PC9404

Then ditch the black to black ISO connector part of it, as all you need is the red plug to RCA part.
The RCA's plug into your rear RCA's on the Alpine, and the red plug on the other end into the pre-out connector on the Audi loom.
The blue flying lead connects to the aerial amp flying lead and then both connect to the power antenna wire on the Alpine.
The speaker plug on the Alpine connects to the brown Audi front speaker connector.
You are then left with the black power ISO on the Alpine. Snip both the yellow and red wires on the Alpine harness (or looks like you can just unplug them), connect them together and then connect both to the red wire on the black ISO plug, which should be in the top corner above the black earth wire. This will pick up the perm live from the Audi harness and feed it to both perm live and ignition on live on the Alpine. You only need 2 wires on the black power ISO, perm live and earth.
Plug the ISO plug into the black ISO socket on the Audi loom and you're done.

Thanks Andy that's a great help.
I have amended the wiring and wanted to confirm it's now correct?

Can't really tell what you've done from those pics, but if you followed my instructions then you'll be fine. You still need the PC9-404 adapter not the 401, it'll make the wiring a lot simpler as well as providing a far better quality signal.

ok, may be best i explain what i've done then.

I have disconnected the black to black iso connect part which had the flying blue wire.
I then diconnected yellow earth with fuse wire on alpine iso connector at top of pic from the RCA connector at bottom left.
I connected the red wire from both the alpine iso and RCA onto the earth.
Is that correct?

Also i have connected the amplified aerial adapter to the blue flying lead on the alpine iso.

Hope that helps.

Thanks again Andy

No completely wrong. The yellow wire is not an earth and the red wire should not be connected to earth. In fact the earth is the only thing you shouldn't be touching.
Yellow is perm live 12v
Red is ignition on live 12v
Black is earth
Blue is 12v trigger when radio is on
Connect 12v to earth and you get smoke & sparks, DO NOT DO IT!

Connect the red and yellow together on the alpine and connect them both to the perm live on the Audi black ISO (top right corner if looking from the wiring side)
Connect all the blues together so they all turn on with the HU
Black earth is already in the correct position
Plug the RCA's on the red connector into the rear RCA's on the Alpine. I still don't see any RCA's so you're still using the wrong adapter as far as I can tell.

Ok, good job i checked!!

harness ordered, should be here tomorrow so will let you know how it goes later this week.

cheers for help matey

Ok Andy, i have now connected everything as i understand it should be now i think so would you mind taking a look at the following pics to confirm i have it right this time??

I hope you can see the reds connected to yellow perm live from alpine connector to black iso connector and also the daisy changed blue cables connected to blue on alpine connector!

Hi Dan, can you not make those pics any bigger? Not sure why your photobucket page won't let me enlarge a decent amount, if I use my photobucket page I can get my images almost full screen size, but yours are no bigger than a fag packet on screen so I really can't make sense of the wiring.
