170 verses 140

I was at miltek a few weeks ago they hate dpf filters they have a mod that replaces the dpf with a bypass pipe and then a remap that also stops the regen kicking in.
They also said that there were complaints at Audi and VW about mpg on the 170's so some dealers turned off the regen in the ecu giving better mpg but black smoke like a non dpf car this was found when the cars turned up for the dpf mod and the tuner found that no warning lights came on due to the regen turned off already.
Regen is when the ecu puts excess fuel in which sticks to the blades in the dpf heating up and burning away the soot deposits its like a fire in the exhaust thats how they put it.

So the manufacturers go to great lengths to improve to environmental performance of their cars and then tuning firms/owners fit a bypass. Very responsible. I assume the tuners/owners also fit an exhaust with the tail pipes turned down to the road which is required by cars without a DPF.

I had a 170PD with a DPF and had no problems at all during the 3 years I owned the car. I now have a new 140 with the latest common rail engine and both it and the 170 have DPFs and I get better fuel comsumption that I did from the 140PD I had before the 170PD.

It will interesting to see how many cars with 170PD engines with the DPF system turned off fail their MOT.

Not everybody wants to be 'sport'. I wouldn't want another S-line, I value my spine and teeth. In a parallell universe where I buy another A3 I'd spec it to be more 'luxury'. I'm finding diesel shoppers dressed up with S's and rock-hard suspension and sporting pretensions a bit :lazy: at my age, and I'm 31

And waving willies about '0.00001 seconds faster to 60' is a bit gay as well

Fast tractors, what's the world coming to eh :eyebrows:

The thread is "170 vs 140", stating the stats pretty much covers the difference...
As for Diesels, if you cover lots of mileage and want economy along with power then we have the option to go that way, dont get me wrong, if i wasnt doing 35k a year i would be quoting in the S3 threads.. I do drive 35k a year and simply cannot afford to run an S3 the way i drive. If your anti diesel why dont you **** off from a diesel thread.

Fair play for the SE though for the comfort seats if thats what you prefer.
As for S-line suspension, i drive shed loads of miles and have no problem with the ride or comfort or my teeth or spine, i like the ride. Is the comfort that much different? I ask because i really dont know but there is nothing wrong with the ride of s-line suspension.

As for your gay remark, im as gay as they come, im a proper little mincer.. I love it and i love *** :asskicking:

I'm not anti-diesel, but I'm not a fanboy either. Plus, I still own and drive a diesel (not for much longer though) so I'll stick my f***ing oar in wherever I like.

I also drive shed loads of miles and the S line suspension really gets on my nerves. It rides like a skateboard but corners like a rowing boat.

As for my gay remark, it may have looked like it, but I wasn't actually name-calling. I meant that the whole "my car's 0.2 seconds faster to 60 so it'll smoke yours" is a bit bent, it wasn't really aimed at you

My conclusion: if you want or need to drive a diesel and being a little bit faster is important, get a 170. I did

You wont pull a bloke, bird, or moose in a BMW 1 series anyway HB.

Pulling bloke, bird or moose is no concern of mine, I'm married :p

My main concern is pulling 155 mph on the way to work every morning :eyebrows:

Fat end please, I like meat on the bones....and I like shoe-shaped cars too

155mph? is that all? damn that rush hour traffic.

Moose....not better....just different my friend...

Damn that pesky speed governor, I say...:whip:

Oh look, I've got involved in a complete off-topic; that's never happened before :faint:

So, get a 170. Or a 140 with a map. Same thing. Just get the nicest colour. If you like brown with green stripes then do so, not everyone's taste is the same *ahem*

I think we've gone waaaaay off topic now!

Anyways, what I'm hearing is the 170's got a bigger turbo.

And gay still means happy, right.

I agree. It's gone well off your original post. Yes the NEW 170cr has a bigger turbo than the NEW 140cr, uses a little more fuel, makes slightly more noise, and goes just a little quicker and in my experience you need to change down slightly more often.

And I also agree that gay means happy as well as any other meaning that some others may choose to use.

Hi audibuyer....hope its back on thread here.....anyway if youre still thinking about 140 or 170 i agree with the mod again..but only my view of course. I dont need any faster than the 140 so for me im getting better mpg, lower CO2, and bizarely (not sure how you spell it!) lower insurance group...11 for the 140, group 14 for the 170?! I would suggest checking out each car driving them both then weighing up the extra costs if you need that extra power if you like it then go for the 170.

I dont want to be the one that says 140 is better then you buy it and decide its not for you.. so the sensible thing to do is weigh it all up in my opinion check out both cars, take for long tests you will notice the difference but as i keep saying im not a speed freak or leave my tyres on the road at lights so the 140 for me anyday...i still cant get over the economy and how quiet audi have made diesels.....they really are very good.

I have today placed an order for a new Black Edition Sportback with the 140.

I appreciate peoples advice and opinions, but I'm solely (well with the wife too) responsible for any decisions and choices. So don't worry Chief.

Having made your choice I'm sure you will soon be enjoying a great car.

And getting it remapped ....

And then pay a fortune in insurance and jeopardise your 3-year warranty just to go a little bit faster on the odd occasions when traffic and conditions permit.

Depends on how important `that little bit faster` is to the individual, and how `odd` those occasions are.

The tuning industry is propped up by people who think the cost/warranty implications of stumping up for a remap are worth it.

Ive had no warranty issues on this or my last remapped car (so far) and insurance costs me an extra £120 this year, less than 1 pint of Lager per week.
And the difference it has made to both cars has been dramatic.
Worth it indeed.

Appreciate your view, and its a one most motorists would agree with, but Im not with you on this one Dave.

Cheers

Nice one audi buyer youll love the engine great choice of spec its an amazing car and unbelievable running costs...the only reason i didnt get black edition was the fact i really wanted the same wheels as my old sport had on and not the new sport version and even when i added on xenons, luggage pack, wheels etc etc it was still cheaper than a black edition on HP so i thought if im happy ill go for it!

Im sure youre a big boy (let the puns begin!) and i wouldnt have talked you into anything you didnt want i just meant sometimes you can be overloaded with advice which affects what you were thinking and wanted in the first place.

Anyway mate :respekt:....make sure you post pics!

And I respect your view Paul. But you drive an S3 so you obviously chose performance over economy in the first place by your choice of car.

Audi-buyer has chosen the 140cr diesel, even over the slightly more powerful 170 version so having slightly at little performance by remapping and paying out for extra insurance etc was not what he wanted, so for 'devonmikeyboy' to suggest a remap was rather silly in this particular case.

Even my 140cr was more than happy cruising at 120mph on the German autobahn a month or so ago, but even in Germany the number of times when that's possible are becoming less and less due to the volume of traffic and the large number of roadworks.

As far as warranty issues are concerned I'm sure these would only come into play if there was a problem with the engine itself. If the dealer noted that an a particular engine had been re-mapped and part of that engine had failed they may be reluctant to deal with under warranty.

Whats the base price difference between a CR140 and CR170 A3 then ?

£930. So it's possibly cheaper to buy a 140 and have it remapped depending how many years extra insurance you have to pay. But only if F you want the extra power. But my point is not everyone wants the extra. Some, like me buy a 140, especially with the new CR engine and are quite happy with the power and speed that the basic car does and don't want to pay any more just to have a liitle more power. To me the power of the 140cr is enough and I my previous car was an 170PD A3 and I hardly notice any difference.

I set out thinking I wanted a 170 because it the top (or there abouts) spec diesel. But all things considered (and some tried) the 140 made more sense for me.

Starting cost is not an important factor - but thats not to say I wont chase discount, can't bear paying the asking price!

I've been running a 140 diesel Golf V for the last two years - its quick enough and a tank easily lasts over 600miles.

Ok, so the the 170 seems a no brainer then for 900quid!

+200bhp if you want it.:icon_thumright:

Going to go back to the ctr v a3, been lucky enough to own a Type R which was S**t hot and a 140 s-line A3. Also lucky enough when I owned my Type R to race a a3 2.0tdi between Blandford and Salisbury. Now I can tell you that from 40mph upwards to 130-140mph there was naf all in it, and I was screwing the s**t out of my car. I was shocked more than anything especially because the p***k was wearing a suit and a bluetooth headset. Anyway I digress, it could of been a 170 or it could of been a 140 with remap, in fact it could of been a 170 remap who cares still very impressive.

I'm bored of outrageous performance claims

"Remapped TDI eats 911 Turbo"

"S3 with Magic Tree faster than Eurofighter"

etc :hi:

I agree. Who cares if another car is faster. Probably means the driver will put it in the ditch quicker! To me there is a lot more enjoyment from driving well than driving excessively fast.

I'm almost with you 100% I enjoy driving well and fast, but measuring your life by how many tenths-of-a-second faster you are than somebody else is a bit futile. Especially if what you do is look at all the manufacturer's 0-60 times and think "well, I'm faster than so-and-so, and it must be true"

Using that mindset, my choice of an auto 130i over a manual (0-60 in 6.3 instead of 6.1) makes me a loser. I don't care, when the road opens up and the traffic melts away all I'm concerned about is how fast I'm going, not anybody else.

If I was choosing a new diesel A3, then I wouldn't automatically go for the 170. What else could you spec instead of those extra 30 horses? Knowing Audi, probably some cupholders and mats :lmfao:

I agree. I like driving well and fast but the odd few seconds in accerations times makes very little difference and any extra top speed is only relevent on German autobahns.

As the 170 is £930 more than the 140 and only goes very slightly faster and accelerates only very slightly quicker, costs more to insure and users more fuel and is slightly less flexible and slightly more noisy, I used the £930 to pay for my Adaptive Xenons with LED driving lights.

But having said that I would be happy with either version providing it was in a SE spec Sportback with all my options!

yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwn lol, just kidding. Im with you h5djr, seems silly to waste the money on a 170when you can trick out a 140 with the money you'd save.

Posting this on a public forum...priceless. :tocktock: Boy racer.

I was on the autobahn between salisbury and Blandford lol. I sometimes forget the names of these German towns so refer to them as english towns, plus I am a compulsive liar. *** covered Auldreeker.

Mate I am not the moral police or owt, but after the much quoted 'Honda driver' incident you wouldn't want this to haunt you. :icon_thumright:

EDIT: @ HBD - You get my vote for bringing 'Bahns to the UK for sure.

On topic, seems like a fine choice :o.k:

Also not forgetting that most base maps from manufacturers are pretty crude and not the most efficient.
After I had my 140 re-mapped, i got better throttle response, found it easier to drive at low revs and gained at least 4mpg on a long run. The way it transformed how the car ran was almost worth the price i paid for the remap, never mind the extra power.

Mine was remapped by CC Tuning, £220 on a special offer.

How much extra do you pay for a year's insurance?

Most of the insurer's I spoke were not prepared to insure a car that had been re-mapped.

I agree mod...thats exactly why i bought a 140 and thought hmmmm money left over adaptive xenons :respekt:!!

Going off topic slightly .....might start a new thread if theres enough interest....my new A3 sportback sport feels totally different suspension to my old one (A3 2.0tdi 140 3 door 07 reg). Its wierd its as if theyre totally different cars....for the better. I understand your view which is why you went for SE trim. I love the revised A3 but more importantly no where near as stiff a ride very smooth and potholes are covered with a more solid feeling well screweed together car not a rigid feeling like the old one.
Not had a sportback before so anyone that wants to comment who had changed from a 3 door to a sportback?
