Driving along to work this morning at around 40mph, came to my turning put my foot on the brake, nothing happened, pedal went straight to the floor, apart from a tiny bit of resistance at the bottom 10mm. The car just went straight on, I pulled on the handbrake and came to a stop eventually.

By a bizzarre set of circumstances my brake fluid level sensor must have stopped working within the last 3 months (the time since I had all new discs and pads all round) and then I had a epic failure on the brake banjo bolt causing my car to lose ALL of its brake fluid without the sensor detecting it, leading me to drive with just a squib of brake fluid left which I pumped out when braking for my turning!

Lucky it was 0700 otherwise the road would have been really busy!

Anyways, to cut a long story short, the garage behind my factory fixed it for £20 and must have made a better job of bleeding the brakes because they feel a lot more firm underfoot!

Near death experience of the day anyway

I went to my local motor spares wholesaler (CAS) and they couldnt find the brake reservoir cap with sensor. Should I go to audi or will they rip me to bits for a part I can buy for 1/4 price?

I've heard of this a few times now, ****** scary stuff, good job you're ok mate.

NExt year when I get my brakes done I'm going braded hoses and new master and slave cylinder to be on the safe side.

Don't blame you mate, it was corrosion on the brake banjo that caused mine to fail, worth getting them looked at too, a brief inspection won't hurt eh :)

this is'nt the same fault as the normal brake fialure, its normally the pipe that comes straight out the master cylinder that fails it rub's through on the oil/coolant line (cant remember which one) to the turbo, so just worth checking that and the rest of the brake lines when doing the brakes not worth changing stuff for the sake of it otherwise you may end up with faults from being to causious

When I had an 8l, there was a solid black pipe that I think connects to the rear flexible hose that sort of rusted from the inside out. I think it was powder coated ally or something. Mine snapped while changing the rear pads so I was lucky!! Once it was off the car it easily broke into pieces. The scary thing is you would never have been able to tell there was anything wrong woth it to look at!!
