A great place called high wycombe, bucks
Right guys i have had it
I want to know some thing and i want it stright lol
I had a............ heated debate about TURBOS
Right i have an A3 1.8T 20v DBW Y reg. Its a standard turbo that came with the car....................................What is it?????????

KO3S (Y-plate is 2000/2001?) although a definitive way to check is to read the part number off the turbo and cross check it to see exactly which one is fitted. The local stealership can also assist, if you ask nicely for the part number based on your registration number.

Facelift were around late 2000. If you have a facelift model I thought it would be a K03S.

150 bhp FWD cars were K03 turbo'd. It was only the TQS and Golf anniversery that got the K03S to give 180 bhp

Would have come from the factory with a ko3 bud for sure doesnt matter if it is a facelift or not.

definately KO3.....the quattro is KO3s and is 180bhp..... yours is definately 150bhp and so KO3

I've just called my local TPS and asked them the part number for my turbo based on my registration number (Y plate A3 1.8t FWD, DBW, engine code AUM), the part number they gave was: 06A 145 713F, they said that the same part number is listed for the AUQ engine (A3 TQS).

VAG Cat came up with this though:

http://www.vagcat.com/epc/cat/au/A3/2000/201/49/2397109/

O6A 145 713D (not 'F'), still listed as KKK, AUM/AUQ.

I would of guessed at K03s turbo, dbw was only on the face lifts I believe...hence being a K03s...

I don't know how accurate the list is though.....

There is a visual difference between the 2 turbo's, something about the number of blades on the impeller (8 blades on KO3S v's 12 blades on KO3). I'm sure someone will come along soon and clarify that.

Just noticed your signature, you have a Custom Code map, do you know your bhp figure, if you broke the 200bhp mark then you most definately have a K03s turbo,

I believe you have...

Well i had it done by Storm in Reading and there rollers are out buy 20-30bhp so i have heard. It said it was 230bhp so if thay are out im there or there abouts
Cant realy say any more on thay mate

There you go then, definately K03s...

You'd be no where near those figures with a K03, some peeps have seen 230ish with the K03s...

As somebody said above.. why not just read the tag on the turbo to get the code and then it's easily identified? Simple.

It aint THAT simple on an A3. There is no room to get your head down to read it.

However, the later 1.8T 150/180 both came with K03.053/053 i believe. the 'S' designation is made up and doesnt actually say that on the turbo. I believe the earlier K03 was a K03.011 or something.

i know for a fact the AUM was a K03's'

Yeah if you could visually check the plate on the turbo it wouldn't actually say K03S as stated above but you could cross reference your findings to see if it is what we term as a 'K03S'.

No room to get a small mirror in there to get a glimpse at the plate either?

.
The Question

Can the K03 turbo (5303 988 0011 or 5303 988 0053) be directly replaced by the K03S (5303 988 0052 or 5303 988 0026) in terms of the intake and exhaust housing dimensions?

Is K03S the correct designation for the latter turbo mentioned above?

Obviously if a K03S was fitted an engine map could be changed to suit, but would a standard turbo map for the K03 be suitable for running a K03S on?
or would a loss of power be expected? and are the characteristics of the two very similar?

I hope you can assist with the above and any information you could supply would be gratefully accepted.

It's taken me a couple of weeks to get a response, but the response was well worth it, I think yóu'll agree.

The Answer

Dear Sir,

thank you for your interest in our products.

First of all, we don't produce any turbo that we call K03S. But I hope I can
answer your questions with the following explanations.

All the following turbos have the same installation dimensions and
thermodynamical performance. The differences are only in the actuator that
opens the turbine bypass valve:
K03-011 (5303 988 0011) 150 hp, 65 N actuator
K03-026 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-035 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-044 150 hp, 65 N actuator
K03-045 156 hp (Ibiza Cupra), 85 N actuator with 2 ports
K03-049 150 hp (Sharan/Alhambra), 65 N actuator
The 180 hp versions have an actuator with a higher opening force due to the
higher exhaust gas pressure (which is a consequence of the higher boost
pressure). Otherwise the valve would be pushed open by the exhaust gas
pressure.

The following turbos are a further development (since 2000) and have an
improved and slightly larger compressor while using the same turbine (still
with the same installation dimensions):
K03-052 180 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-053 150 hp, 85 N actuator
K03-058 150 hp/180 hp, 85 N actuator

Consequentially, putting a 180 hp turbo on a 150 hp engine will not bring
about any change in performance, but putting on a K03-052/053/058 instead of
the older versions will bring a slight improvement in engine efficiency.
Additionally, with re-mapping the ECU you can achieve about 215 hp without
danger of overspeeding the turbo. With the older turbos, 195 hp is the
limit.

With the K04 that's also commonly used (5304 950 0001) the power output
should not be more than 220 hp. That means, changing a K03-052/053/058
against a K04 does not make a lot of sense.

I hope that these details answer your questions. If you need more info, one
of our service distributors will be glad to help you. Their addresses are on
our website www.turbodriven.com.

I think he means a K04.001 which is not much better than a K03

Not a K04.001 or k04.015... lol

Sorry, not sure of the code.
