Hi.

I am after some help and advice on upgrading to a MFSW...

Off my build sticker i have found the code - 1MR = Leather steering wheel

At the moment i have this style of wheel.

I would like replace this with a multi-function, is it just a case of getting the same style, but with the buttons?

Will the same Air Bag work / fit?

Is the loom there for the buttons and just a case of a few clicks in VAG-COM?
 
you may also need a SWCU so it all works check part with vcds and post up
 
Anyone know how hard this would be?

I am guessing if i get the same style wheel then the AirBag will be the same unit?

Will the loom be there for the buttons? I have cruise control and DIS

Will i be able to control RNS-E / Blue tooth?

Will i be able to SDS to work?
 
Hi Steve - This is a straight forward plug and play swap. Your old airbag will work fine and because you already have cruise then your steering module won't need replacing.

The loom for the buttons is attached to the wheel itself so you just plug it in to the car loom when you remove the old one. To get it to control RNS-E, bluetooth etc you will have to recode with vagcom so it knows that you now have a MFSW and to get the other stufff to work as well.
 
So will just be a quick change!

Hope so! Going to try and get the MFSW tomorrow, and installed over weekend.

Anyone got a guide to remove the wheel?

Airbag should be ok, just match up the wheel with airbag colour, sometimes can be off colour but 99% time its ok & loom comes with airbag, so you might have to update your airbag loom for the button functions to work, cruise is irrelevant when it comes to loom as cruise stalk plugs straight into the column, given looms inside wheel then why would this affect the cruise etc, common sense prevails.

Yes to RNS, BT & SDS as long as you code & wire it all correctly.

All B7's have the same steering module so its irrelevant if you have cruise or not.

& no the wheel doesnt come with the loom, it usualy comes with the airbag, also its a seperate item to buy so also individual part.

There are 2 holes at rear of wheel, get a torx bit to undo the 2 bolts, they maybe covered up with 2 covers that just pop of to reveal the bolts, do with ignition of & press airbag inwards to take tension of the bolts so easier to undo & remove.

Dont rush into like a bull mate, take your time & dont rush it, rushing breaks stuff, trust me, patients required for these things

Hoping to get the wheel tomorrow and can then have a better idea of how it all works!

Do you know the part number for this loom for the buttons to work? Would it require new airbag, or just a change to the loom?
 
Not sure on part number, if get chance will check, but nah reuse airbag no worries as long as wheel matches up with interms of shape etc, just loom change, think they're about £30-£40 but ebay has them cheaper iirc
 
Is there any way to know if I will need the new loom? As when I have it in bits I be stuck if I need it. Don't really want to strip it again
 
it takes two minutes mate to remove an airbag and steering wheel, not a big job at all, the two torx bits at the back are the fiddliest bits to do, the wheel then is only one 12mm spline in the middle and pull.

Takes few minutes to remove airbag to look at loom, yeah you should have another plug for the buttons to connect to, if yours has this on loom then it will have unused connector sitting inside the wheel below airbag

minds thinking alike lol & its a spline for the wheel to be removed, not torx, lol.

I was just on about the bit that's attached to the wheel it self. Completely forgot about the bit in between!!!! DOH

Wish I had made a note of the part number of that bit now before it was fitted.
 
I've done the 3 spoke non mf to mf and I had to add the harness with part number 4F0 971 589A if that helps

And it was pretty cheap too. About £15

I've been watching ebay quite closely. From the threads I've read about non-MFSw to MFSW in a b7, the recommended slip ring part is 4e0 953 541 B. This keeps showing up as an A6 slip ring. Shouldn't the correct slip ring be 8e0 953 541 B (although they show up as C and D)?

Just wondered if it mattered?
 
I meant just the wiring harness from airbag to the slip ring i needed an extra harness.

Im pretty sure I used 4e0 953 541 B for my slip ring part too.
 
All B7's share the same slip ring & steering ecu, plus the 4E0 part is corrrect & is shared with many other chassis's including the A6

I know when I changed to a mfsw I needed a new slip ring with 12 pins as my original only had 6!
 
Thats very strange cause it only lists one slip ring & one steering module for the B7 from 05 to 08, so how you got different is an anomaly for sure mate & I've always known the B7 to have the same components, can you remember the part numbers of old/new so I can investigate for future ref to anyone asking.

Ok So I have a 2005 A4 2.0tdi S-Line (BLB engine) it was first reg'd in Apr 2005. It didn't have DIS, Cruise, or a mfsw, so I retrofitted them all.

My old slip ring part number was 4E0 953 541 There is no letter at the end so i presume it was A? I replaced it with B i think (im not sure because its in the car and I got the part off ebay)

I also changed the steering wheel control module From 8E0 953 549 S to 8E0 953 549 R

And now everything works as it should. I just presumed I needed to change both!
 
It wont be an A unless its marked mate, I will check these anyway for future ref as thats a 1st to me, thanks.
 
Well thats very weird indeed mate, urs must be on the border between the B6 & B7 manufacturing dates, cause the slip ring is actually the A4 cab & the module is replaced by a Q or an N & one comes up on the A4 cab & the other comes up on cab & B6 cars, so think yours is caught between chassis's which has been heard of, speculating but seems to stand to reason as I cant explain it anyother way cause your avatar shows a saloon which I'm assuming is your car, anyway there is only 1 listing for each part for B7 A4 saloon & avant.

Damn didnt know A4 could get heated wheel, thought was only on upper models, learn something new everyday.

The more I read about this the more concerned I am. Do you have to be a dab-hand at VAG-COM as I have a mate that has recently purchased it but is a novice?

Ebay.de have a load of A6 sliprings with indicator and cruise stalks with the slip ring, 4E0 953 541 A but I know all the retrofit guidance states to get 4E0 953 541 B.

There are a load of the "S" control module's on ebay and presumed, maybe stupidly, that the "S" must be the most recent control module so would cope with cruise control and MFSW but am unsure. It looks like the "N" designation also works.

Pity both the B slip ring version and the R control module version are few and far between on ebay. I don't particularly want to pay the stealers as they are very pricey.
 
Where did he buy vagcom?

Also what version module & slip ring do you have now?
 
slip ring B & steering module R are listed solely for the B7 A4 saloon & avant, so these would be safe to buy for sure.

What about the steering module S?

I think, I haven't taken it to bits, that I may have the steering module F. Would the dealer be able to tell me based on the chassis number?
 
Pass on S & F steering module doesnt exist, dealer will advise from vin, F module you maybe confusing with the 8P.
 
The F module does exist and is fitted to many cars (I've removed enough of them) but it is not listed on ETKA.

I can't agree that all B7s have the same steering wheel control module either.
 
OK let me rephrase this, the F steering module doesnt show in etka & hasnt been superseded either, so by this alone I would say they dont exist, but if you say they do, then fair enough, can you check the part number please on an old one, maybe it starts differently & etka only shows 1 steering ecu & slip ring for the B7 avant & saloon now & mines upto date.
 
I'm sure I've got a couple kicking around at home but from memory it's 8E0 953 549 F, same as you would expect.

I've done a few B7s too and had to change the controller unless it already had MFSW.
 
Very strange as always known to be the same, typical audi, stupid thing is etka is fairly good at checking part numbers directly with part number usage or ATP function & shows redirect to another one but doesnt even exist in etka, weird.
 
What exactly does the SWCM actually do? I'm just wondered whether it is safest to buy a new one from dealer or would it matter getting one from a scrap yard where the airbag has gone off?
 
As far as I'm concerned, its perfectly safe to get one from scrappy coco (lol, zohan)because airbag is controlled by the airbag controller in center console under the climate control, bolted down, steering module is basically a pass through for signals mostly to that controller, I had a unit that airbag went of with & it worked fine, its the airbag controller that would need either changing or resetting after an ignition from my readings anyway, happy someone to update if thats wrong but so far its been so for me.

I have one at home from an RS4 so will check the part number tomorrow evening and let you know. NHN then maybe able to tell you if it would work or not.....

If you want a new one I'll save you some money over the dealer price.
