So I finally plumped for vision at night instead of fumbling my way around the countryside,

got a set of 50W 5000k H7's from HID Direct. Car is facelift B5 avant so already has Valeo projectors fitted.
instructions seemed pretty straightforward and I am no electrician so was a little concerned it would be trciky.

Whip the head light out - two torx screws on the top of the unit, one at the lower side behind the indicator accessed through the hole near the edge of the wing. bit tricky but you can get your hand down to grab the screw and torx bit.
unit wiggles out away from centre. two plugs to disconnect and you can retire to the warmth.

OEM Balast recess in bottom of unit:

Instructions call for a 25mm hole drilled into bulb cover, but I didn't like that idea and it also means the cables are all over the place.
drill the hole through the base where the balast will be.
Balast test fitted......like a glove:

hole for cable routing:

cable fitted with grommet in place (f. tight fit!):

all wrapped up ready to be tested back in place:

view from the back, sticks out at the bottom but there is a surprising amount of room below the headlight.all the joints are pressure fit water tight, was going to seal them all in a bag but didn't in the end.

The ballast is a very tight pressure fit into the OEM recess but I screwed it in with a plastic strap just in case and cable tied the loose cables to the edge of the recess.

let there be light, HID right, H7 halogen left, photos don't really show the difference but it really is night and day :

job done.
Obviously I have headlight washers and self levelling mechanisms in place to comply with the legal requirement........

Nice job.

Did you retrofit self levellers? As it was only fitted to cars with factory HID'd.

Ah.....not quite done that bit yet....

you were doing a retrofit weren't you? did you pull a kit together or something like that?

if you want a kit, kufatec sell one,

otherwise just buy the brackets, ecu and sensors etc from a breaker and wire it up yourself.

Ah.....not quite done that bit yet....

I did put one together, and fitted it to my own car before I copied it!

I'm going to build another master kit though, so it's easy to knock more up at short notice.

interested but at 259 euros for the kit they are steep

you need the brackets as well 259 not 89

you can always pull the brackets, sensors and ECU out of a breaker, then just use the loom from kufatec, which should work out cheaper, but if you've got access to a breaker, you may as well just get the loom plugs and make the loom up yourself too.

The A8 and probably other models use the same ECU and sensors, so you can always get the sensors and ecu from one of them and then just buy the bracket from audi for your particular model

what exactly does it do?
alter the headlight position constantly as you go up and down?

Pretty much.

I'm not sure if it constantly does it, or if it takes an average over a period of time or what, but basically if you stick two folk, or a pile of bricks or whatever in the back of ANY a4 (well any car at all really), your supposed to adjust the little knob on the dash to the appropriate setting for the load to keep the headlight declination at the required 1%. Very few people even know what the knob is for, let alone use it, so on HID equipped cars where the beam is much brighter, the law says the headlights must automatically level themselves regardless of vehicle loading etc.

ah, I actually use that knob quite a bit as the car is usually 5 up with a boot full of bikes, bags and bricks!
you can see the beam pattern coming further up the road signs when it like that

Yer, but thats becuase you actually have a brain!

Far too many drivers dont, and wouldnt even notice the lights pointing skywards...

whats the light like at night?
my ebay cheapies look bright but illuminate the road about the same as a birthday cake candle
i think i need to fit a better kit or possibly just better bulbs

will tell you later when I fit the other set to my main beams!!

I've got retro-fitted HID's on my facelift. Night-time vision with them is great.

I'm glad I read this thread though as I never knew about the little 'pouch' for the ballasts under the headlight units... mine are fixed in some weird places in the engine bay. Now I know this, I can re-locate them neatly. Brill!

did you do the whole auto levelling system?

They were already fitted when I bought the car.

And, if anyone in 'authority' wants to know, the autolevelling device is, of course, fully installed and working perfectly.

Not.

HID mains?

Seems a little pointless to me, you'll lose your ability to flash people, or if it does still work, then you'll be giving the ballasts a hard time...

I also dont find anything wrong with the halogen mains?

Mains...?

Mine are only dipped... I've still got the original bulbs for main beam. (and you can tell as the light is really yellow compared to the dipped HID's!)

Think he's got a bit confuzzled...

nope, not confuzzled.
Plenty of Cars have seperate HID dipped and mains as opposed to sheilded BiXenon with the mask. Lexus, Mercedes, BMW etc etc
They don't die as quickly as people make out from flashing, they just don't light as quickly or as brightly as halogens when flashed.
In fact the Lexus IS200 flashes both main and dip when you flash.

mine are now also so crap and yellow that you can hardly ****** see the difference!

I will let you know if they die in two weeks time though. never one to avoid admitting I am wrong.

How quickly do they actually fire up? I know the OEM ones are pretty fast, but i'm sure i've heard the cheap ebay ones can take a number of seconds to fire, rendering them useless for flashing anyway.

oh no, these are very quick, otherwise I wouldn't consider it.
less than a second certainly, can't say for sure but there is no delay.
I would say it is a case of click of the switch, a quick flicker and then the light full on.

Right then, the build continues.
Main beam HID's. Only issue is the ballast position is taken up with the other ones now so I had to be creative.
I hate seeing wires everywhere so I routed the harness through the base again and hid the HID under the front panel under the headlight housing.

quick coat of matt black and the ballast blends in nicely:

no wires for the MOT man to get excited about. "Must be OEM with self levelling as standard"!

and for anyone concerned about losing their flashability:

looks fine to me.
pattern and level to be checked tonight when dark.....the suspense is killing me!

cheers.
TBH its not rocket science, you just need a straight wal and a flat surface.
Nice dark car park down the road here so will see if I can get some decent pics.

looking forward to seeing where I am going at night!!

I used a couple of blobs of Blue-Tac on a wall to level and centre my lights when I went facelift. Quick, easy and accurate!

How easy is it togo facelift? Anytime I do a search on here it brings back results for all areas of the forum :-(

It's ****** scary to do but the results speak for themselves

Really not sure what I was thinking with those crystal indicators though. Ahhh well.

you just need some HIDs now!!

Still trying to find a how to on this otherwise I'll just 'sympathetically' start grinding away!

just done mine. only on low beam but i can see at nite now! much better. my driver side lamp has a scuff on it and its surprised me how much less light you get from it compared to the other side.

Great stuff Ian, get that sorted asap as you may dazzle someone else

tempted to machine polish it but the lens is plastic so not sure if it will work. you realy notice the beam pattern now as being \__ shape now that its bright enough to see properly.

you will need to wet sand them 1st lots of stuff on google etc. then polish them up after. How bad is the scratch, is it deep?
