Correct oil?

Hello Foxmeister. I changed mine yesterday. Beforehand I was on the phone to Audi Slough and the computer there came up with 10w/40 semi synthetic. However I believe Castrol reccomend a 5w/30 fully synthetic...... http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829. I told this to the guy in parts/service at Audi and he said that grade would be good on a brand new car but not one with 100 tho on the clock. Obviously to do with the viscosity/thickness. So I opted for the 10w/40. Did a flush too. loadsa sh**e and sludge came out!! happy days!!lol!! Just to make you aware Halfrauds are doing a special on Castrol sport 10w/40 oil. 4 ltrs for 20 squid (originally 35). Tidy! Hope this helps.

it appears 10w40 semi is right too, accordign to my records. fuchs titan 10w40 semi from GSF only costs about £13 for 5L

Most VAG engines, including the 1.8T and the S4! were 10w40 semi before long life servicing came in, it really doesnt last as well though, especially in a turbo engine.

I run the 1.8T on 5w40 synth. I dont feel to happy about dropping to a 30 weight, it gets a bit too thin when hot which doesnt help the already weak oil pump.

If your going to run it on 10w40 semi, then i'd be doing 5k oil changes for sure. Our 1.8T gets 5k changes on synth and its pretty rank when it comes out!

My recommendation would be a 5w40 or 0w40 fully synth oil.

my thinking exactly

10w40 can be had for cheap (like the fuchs stuff at GSF) and 5k will be fine with it

people say 5w30 but we dont have modern engines. i run 5w40 in the golf if i know its going to be in for some abuse and if/when i get an S4, thats going on 5w40 too

Guy:

Thats really not particularly useful. Your thing recommends 10w40 semi synth oil for an S4, which i'm sure your well aware should be running on a high quality fully synthetic (and preferably ester based) oil, given that its a twin turbocharged V6 motor, more often than not tuned too...

It also suggests the same oil for the 1.8T motors which again, given the high rate of engine failures due to sludging should really be running a good quality synthetic oil.

Aragorn, what would you personally reccomend for a 2.8 V6 normally aspirated engine? 5w/30 or a 10w/40 fully/semi? Many Thanks.

I would only use a fully synthetic (as mentioned try-ester based) 5w30 or 5w40 engine oil. Nothing else will do...

Mick, I changed the oil on my 2.8Q the other day and used 10w40 semi synthetic lucas oil, and I believe its always had that grade since I got it. The car runs fine on it.

What would be the benifits of running it on 5w40/30 fully synthetic?

Sam

longer drain intervals
less friction
less heat (in cars ive had in the past, fully synth oil temp is abuot 2-4* lower for typical situations compared to semi synth)

5w30 would be thinner when hot, i cant see how thats a benefit on your engine tbh considering it was presumnably designed for 40 oil when hot

tbh, ive been hard pushed in the past to visually see a difference in viscosity when cold (ie 5*C) between 5w and 10w oil

from data sheets ive read about viscosity, 5w oil wasnt significantly more "fluid" than 10w until it got colder than -20*c

so ive not been tempted to go for a 0w (but ive not owned an engine that required it)

Ah, well it depends on what year you are looking at? The S4 2.7 Turbo from 1998ish is not at base level recommended a high grade synthetic, as standard its just a 15w-40 that meets VW501.01. Anything up from there is is a bonus and down to the owner.

Cheers

i suspect if you ran an S4 on 15w40 semi for 100k on the vag service intervals it'd be well and truly knackered...

adam, are you oil man? :w00t:
No mate, i'm not an oilman but i've ran plenty cars(specially diesels) on 5w30 Castrol EDGE and never had problems and the engines are soo clean inside with nearly no wear inside...Take a 1.8T wich was ran on 10w40 and you will see the difference...all gunk inside wich blocks the oil pick-up ! Even high milleage engines(200k +) were still good as new inside !! Unless you race the engine or its higly modified, i would not dismiss 5w30 Castrol EDGE fully syn. oil...it's 507 spec so good for ALL modern engines either petrol or diesel.

Im not a fan of it, but thats the spec VAG now recommend as minimum for the S4 2.7 and if you ask me or speak to me I will always recommend a quality synthetic. The 4.2 is a different matter, on their extended service interval they are currently recommending VW503.00 or VW504.00. If it is on fixed service they are stating a minimum of VW501.01 just like the S4 2.7

Cheers

The most dodgy part of that recommendation, is its only "acceptable" if the motor is on normal servicing. If its on AVS / Longlife servicing with 20k between oil changes, then it shouldnt be on a semi-synth, and the majority of S4's and infact most audis from around 2000 onwards will be on AVS.

2 or 3 years back a friend of mine was after a mk4 golf 20vt. we looked at a fair few, 105k-115k ish miles.

the one she bought in the end was on about 113k miles, its whole life had been serviced with quantum synta 10w40 semi and had no sludge, but another that had lived on the same oil had gum inside the oil filler etc

i think the gum has to be down to the intervals

my own golf with 212k miles is totally gum free, clean as a whilst inside there, even on the original hydaulic tappets still. i have run atf through there a couple times though which does make a difference.

ive always run anything turbo on fully synth though simply due to the heat the oil will experience going through the turbos

personally i think the 20k interval is the dodgiest part. i felt really guilty leaving the oil in my golf once for 9k. 20k intervals have to be for tight/lazy/fleet people

SDM: I understand what your saying, and i've been in the same situation myself, but this is when people need to learn to DIY.

A Gallon of oil and a filter is 20quid, a new engine is £2000+. Even places like kwikfit do oilchanges for much cheapness.

I can understand that throwing £100-200 at a dealer might be out of someones reach if cash is tight, but if you cant throw £20's worth of oil and filter at the car every 5-10k, then you have to question how the rest of the vehicle is maintained and how safe it is to actually be on the road....

my thoughts exactly

£15 for some 10w40 semi Fusch from GSF and a filter for £4

if you cant afford that then a car really isnt for you. if you drive over a nail, id hate to have the car sidelined for 6 months because i couldnt afford a replacement

and only a lunatic would be getting the dealer to service their car if they were that broke. if thats the case they need to get their hands dirty like me and the rest of the peasants who fiddle with their own cars
