im thinking of removing the fogs to get more air into the intercoolers and was wondering how hard it is to do, plus i want to knw wot easy DIY mods i can do to my air box to get more air into her?

i got rid of my fogs last month they're for sale on here.
just pull the grill out undo 3 screws unplug them and thats it
i wrapped the connector in water proof tape and stuck them up out of the way
i also grafted some grillage into the fog holes so you can hardly notice untill i re mesh the lot with hex mesh

i didnt notice a blind bit of difference in performance tho it might show on vag com but i never used them and they only get broken and need replacing £90 each
the airbox also has an intake in the wing as well as to the front of the car but its tiny you could add a ram air pipe but probably wouldnt notice the difference i was looking at this a few weeks back and decided to stop wasting my time

Grant you know if make's sense, not only that it looks good

I'm thinking of losing my fogs too. They're tiny and hopeless anyway. I'm going to keep them and the Nogaro grilles safe though (for if I ever sell the car).

you get into trouble for using them, they only project about 10 feet and cost £90 each to replace, all good reasons for binning them.it would be interesting to see a vagcom log showing cooler intake temps tho, i read somewhere 5 degree's cooler????

you'll need to put the grills back in or are gonna get another set to re mesh??
get some similar grill and line the slats up and glue it to the back of the foglight surround
i'll post a pic of mine 2moro showing how i've covered the hole so it can just be removed at a later date and put the fogs back in. you can hardly tell unless you squat down and look properly

unitl I get some HID's I am going to keep mine. I use them on B roads as they light the sides of the verge better...also have 100w bulbs in mine so they are a little more effective.
have used them quite a bit in fog as well

test fit mine last night after my FMIC move, should be OK and unlikely to affect charge cooling as the are not infront of any pipes except a portion of RHS silicon.

daft question fellas, but the wheel arch liner, are they solid on the s4 or are they slated?

its all well and good trying to ram more air in, but it needs somewhere to escape after

i had a b6 tdi years back, tweaked etc, and a good mod i did was to alter the arch liner to allow air out after it had been through the cooler

hmmm id be tempted to remove every other slat, hopefully allowing more air to pass through

i love geeky stuff like this, id be out there with vagcom to see which one made a difference to intake temps

I doubt removing the foglamps will make any difference to the car's performance.

Yeah, pretty unnoticable (if at all).

Couldn't do any harm though, and the removal of any obstruction from the path of the already tiny intercoolers is a plus.

When I had my Astra GTE on the rollers, removing my front numberplate (which only partially overlapped the FMIC) made a big difference to the cooler and its temperatures. At Santa Pod........the plate came off. The best example I've been told is to drive along at say 60mph with your hand out of the window and feel the air behind the door mirror, and then ease your hand up slightly to feel the rush of dense air ABOVE the mirror (no obstruction).

Also, I don't like too much pointless stuff on the car,.........like having fogs that are about as much use as a helicopter ejector seat

Surprisingly enough, i find the fogs are actually useful when its foggy...

We lost ours when we went to facelift lights, and while it doesnt affect anything most of the time, the times it has been foggy it was annoying not having that extra bit of light.

Were there different fogs maybe?

Mine are definitely el crappo in the fog.

The main lights are superb though.

whip the crappy bulbs out of them and get some decent ones in. made a big difference in my fogs.

600W of light up front now!! still pants compared to HID's!

that would be worth doing maybe with them ultra white LED jobbies so they match the colour of the xenons

just make sure if you remove the fogs you dont drive anywhere before you fill the holes up as the stone that cracked my foglight is still out there somewhere waiting to punch a hole in your intercooler.....lol

wel actually I find teh 100W bulbs as useless as the 55w!
I put one in and left one stock, could barely tell the difference.

ordered some HIDs today!! watch this space, arrive thursday!

im not after performance as like most of you said it doesnt make much difference, i just want to help lower the charge temps, evey little helps.

ill be doin this after ADI though

I find my foglamps very supplementary on dark country lanes.

You really need to see that big **** deer waiting to total your car, and just stroll off back into the undergrowth.

Are they extra girly fragile on an S4 then?

I drove around for a couple of years with my FMIC exposed on my Astra......

I should really mesh mine up, but i've meaning to do that for the last 2-3 years! Doh! Maybe before ADI.

got some HIDs for my fogs as well!
I use them a lot on the country roads.

Don't want my FMIC perforated by some rogue rabbit, although I did hit a sheep once (his fault not mine) and the front survived admirally

just the same as a radiator really and i've seen a fair few of them damaged by stones in the past causing an obvious water leak.
a tiny boost leak might be undetecable untill its too late and if the afore mentioned stones can break the toughened glass in the fog light or windscreen i imagine it could puncture a hose/pipe or intercooler fin yes

here's a pic of my grill its not very clear as its zoomed in but you can just see the grill stuck to the back of the fog light surround to enable refitting the fogs if required

Mate of mine seems to have some kinda animal attraction. He's always hitting things in the road lol, he took out two sheep coming up the A70 at night, wrecked the front end of his dads renault 19, and drove the rest of the way home with one headlight bulb dangling from the wires :D

He also only recently spent months reshelling a clio, before taking it for a little test up his farm road, a deer popped out the hedge infront of him and he belted it mid flight doing about 40. Clio managed to come away with only a dented bonnet, the deer made tasty dinner.

i love venison i just think its a little dear.....lol
