Hi peeps,

have mentioned it before but bvasically i retrofitted my sat nav through audi when i bought my car (didnt realise you could do it for £600 via ebay :motz:)

well anyway Audi proper striped me up and gave me the nav with the old black nobs... i wanna know.. is it hard to change them over? can it even be done? i think them two little chrome nobs make such a difference to the interior look! and i want it sorted! how about these hazzydays people?? im not good with anything like this.. too scared ill f**k it up!!

Hello mate,

I imagine, they'll simply come off with some mild force. Not completely sure so disclaimers apply if it don't : )

Curiously, when they fitted it, did they wire in the loom for the TV Tuner? As some of you know I've had mine fitted recently but I do not get TV (would've been able to watch the Singapore GP this weekend if it worked!!.. Grrr.) because the wiring loom doesn't exist. Ultimately, I'll probably go for DVB but would've been nice to get ET in the meantime.

Actually, the functionality of the rns-e, the functions off the steering wheel etc works almost identical to my brothers 2004 BMW M3..... his TV works however!

Cheers...

KKP

It`s very hard work fitting those ****** knobs.

They aren`t plug&play , top one just comes off and the new one needs to be worked in order to fit.
As for the volume button you have to take the whole fascia of the RNS-e off in order to pull it out.

I did the change myself, and i`m telling you mate, not a happy hour!

NHN could help you though , he`s done it some times now :)

i wouldnt even know where to start pulling out the rnse and taking the facia off!

so does the top button not even fit properly?? like is it noticably a boj job?

eBay, they go for around 40p or you can always try your local dealership!

As said, you need to take the whole unit apart to get to the bottom button. Its not for the faint hearted or I would have done it too LOL

40p, you're kidding, audi want about £30 for them, its a job & half & trust me if you havnt at least studied the fitment for new ones as I have, then my advice is leave it, if you dont do it correctly & with some patients & knowledge of the actual pcb knob designs then you will damage there functionality of the knobs themselves, as in the volume & the selector dials wont work properly, very delicate job & I actually use parts of the old knob to fit the new ones aswell, not for faint hearted & I've done fair few times now, takes number of hours.

I am happy to do but at a cost & if you want any ref's on my work on this ask Mattandrew, N8 KOW as a few have done for.

Uh no mate, you're wrong, they are the rns-e buttons & they are in etka, the pcb fixed dials are different in fitment for the newer knobs as per that link & they're the exact same ones I have fitted to a number of units & as per on the S version & newer units.

I ordered directly from audi aswell for the rns-e.

So audi are selling these so-called RNS-e buttons even though they won`t fit?

Weird!

Those are the same that i used for mine too.
Dremel out and fingers crossed!

ok well id much rather someone whos done it before have a go! im in essex/east london.. doable??

Dont think i would trust any bloke with my knob. Expecially if N8KOW had his fall off :crying:

Unfortunately its not as simple as dremelling to get the original effect IMHO, the bottom one if you just swap them over once you've taken the front panel of & apart, will have a led bleedover where the led shines through round the edges as per Marc Quinny's rns did which is ****** distracting when driving & using, this is why the original knob has a kind of umbrella piece of plastic that covers the led's by the pcb itself then allows the led light to channel up through the middle, its very meticulous work to get the oem effect IMHO, I've perfected it to a T now, also the top one has to be pulled of & if you with both knobs push & pull (no obscene jokes please lads) them of the pcb mounted dials, then this damages the internal workings & makes them loose & as the internals relay on a flexible piece of metal that has pressure on this to allow the kind of click effect when pushing to make contant with the circuit, this stops working thus has to be repaired or replaced as huge cost.

Everyone to there own though.

Avoid Nigel at all cost, he hasn't got the faintest idea what he's doing, my knobs fall out everyday  Only joking  Nigel is the retrofit king, he is Mr OEM :applaus:

My chrome buttons are amazing :hubbahubba:

Bar steward, those mods seem even longer away now sonny jimbo, lmfao

PS. Cheers Nate, love yer too bro

lmao that`s some good reference

Man love, lmfao

I just people to send the rns to me for few days then I can do the mod & test on my car obviously with code, then send it back, its not a cheap mod at all, but it really is surprising the difference it makes.

Urrgghhh someone had to didnt they, lol, it didnt fall of man, his missus bit it of :undwech:

What are we saying here ? the chrome knobs are part of the pot on the PCB ?

alternatively these people seem to do a knurled ring to fit over the original knob

http://www.tachoringe.de/catalog/index.php?cPath=33_73

Dont even touch those crap chrome rings, lmfao, seriously they look awful on the rns, so cheap & nasty, mate got some & my god amazing how so little of a mod but terrible look it gave it.

Yea..they do look like someone made them in their lunch hour :)

The proper bits

I just love this part :)

Driving & using? Yeah this could be distracting lmao

I did mine although I can't remember how many hours it took to do! They do look the biz and as a one off it was worth it but I wouldn't go through that pain again. Take NHN up on his offer

ok, well i dont even know how to take it out!? is it hard?
how much am i looking at if i sent it up to you then? all in including parts..

I wouldnt advise you do yourself if you dont have experience already, expensive unit to go wrong.

As for cost, well knobs are £30, postage if SD used is about £21 each way & £50 to do the job & trust me £50 for doing that is nothing when you see how intricate the work involved is, along with testing of course, not a cheap mod at all, but for me well wothwhile.
