Since having the windows down more as the weather is getting nice I have noticed an odd noise coming from the front of the car outside.

If you don't turn the wheel the noise isn't there. Start to move the wheel when the car is stationary and it appears. It is completely random as to when it appears and the frequancy is random too. When manoeuvring the car it is very noticable, turn wheel while reversing, click...click.......click. It seems to be getting worse.

I can only describe the sound like a relay click on and off. A metallic sound.

Is it my steering rack or something else?

 if your C.V joints have had it you will here a, click when the wheel is turned when you are moving slow, but more so if you turn full lock and do a complete circle, how old is the car? and does it do it when you are reversing? with the wheel turned? there are only so many things it can be, if you are not sure get it checked out. or jack it up and give it a check tug on ya wheel and check your driveshafts there should be minimal play, if they have alot of play, book it in dude!

The car is only about a year old, it has covered 11,000 miles. It also makes the sound when reversing the car. It will make the sound when moving slow and when stationary. I'm going to book it in with Audi for next week and get them to sort it.

if it makes the noise while sationary it wont be a c.v. mate may be power steering pump? at a guess, that could be the only other thing i can think of, let me know what audi say mate, get a second opinion just in case audi try to sting you for loads of cash, could be the rack or pump,

It seems when I first showed the problem to Audi the car did make the sound when stationary. It now only makes the sound when the car is moving at slow speeds and it seems to becoming more frequent. Several clicks instead of one or two. Hmmmm

Just dropped the car off at Audi this morning to have this clicking noise sorted. Got a call this afternoon from the service manager saying it was the wheel bearings that needed replacing. All ok, no problem, all done under warranty! Yet another thumbs up for Tonbridge Audi!

Nice one mate. How come it took so long to get this far though?

On holiday and the car went to AmD to get the clutch and flywheel changed over to check for faults. My Sachs clutch and flywheel are now at Germany being looked at.

They say it's the wheel bearings when it is clicking when stationary, just turning the wheel and now when moving slowly forward too?

I'm not convinced that sounds right but I could be wrong without hearing. For a wheel bearing to click it has to be a catastrophic failure of the cage holding the ball bearings. This would click all the time & get worse the faster you go. Worn bearings more usually whine also getting louder with speed.

Hope you get it sorted ok.

Well it could do whilst stationary if you turn the wheel left to right as the wheel would move minimally which inturn would move the bearings minimally aswell & if the bearings are shot then it would be noticeable even on a stationary turn L/R IMHO, has given me ideas now as I have a clicking noise aswell, damn it another thing to throw into the pot, but it doesnt do anything when moving the wheel by hand so dont think its them & no movement whatsoever either on bearings, oh well.

seems a problematic car Mr N, if you have made any mods to the car I would remove them and fit them to a new car :undwech:
