Hi Guys, I have the standard Bose sound system in the A4 quattro Saloon, the speakers on the rear shelf sound as though they have seen better days and don't like any music with a bit a base. How do you take the covers off these rear shelf speakers to inspect them. And if shot where and what are good replacements/upgrades to fit the standard holes. (the rest of the speakers are all fine its just the rear shelf ones that don't sound good.)

On craigs S4 the rear shelf speakers seem to act as subwoofers, with the door speakers doing the normal rear fill.
As such its not surprising they're knackered, as they're not particularly large for heavy bass work!
The problem you will have is that they are 2ohm speakers as standard, and finding 2ohm replacements isnt easy.
I'd be tempted to replace the Bose amp with a 2ohm stable 4-channel amp to run the front and rear door speakers, and a monoblock or bridged 2 channel to run a boot mounted subwoofer, and ditch the rear shelf speakers all together.

Thanks for that. Does anyone know how the covers on A4 rear shelf speakers come off? Also what would happen if I fitted 4 ohm speakers instead of 2 ohm OEM units
Thanks Geeman, on mine I won't need to take the back of the seats out as they fold flat once you unlock them with the key. Is taking the shelf out a pain in the ***? Also you have 4 ohm rear speakers fitted, how long for and are you using the standard Bose amp. Did you fit sub woofer units. I spoke with my local car accessory shop and he told me I could damage the amp if I run 4 ohm instead of 2 ohm. (which I can't understand), i could see running 2 ohm instead of 4 ohm would damage the speakers.

Have you physically looked inside of the covers to see if the dust covers have popped off? This is a pretty common issue with the Bose speakers. Many take them out or glue them back on. It makes the speakers sound horrible under any type of load. Like stated above you have to take the rear shelf completely out to access them properly.

Basically if you fit 4ohm speakers it will still work, but you'll get half the power output from the amp that you had previously. Given that the amp is already pretty poor, halving that output doesnt seem sensible to me.
I guess it depends if you want a better sound system, or just to stop the racket from the broken cones. Could always just unplug them

I replaced ALL my speakers AND all the wiring in my car... I've now got components and cross-overs in the front doors and 2-ways in the parcel shelf... I don't have rear door speakers 
I now also have a sub in the boot powered by a separate amplifier too.
It all runs off the back of my retro Blaupunkt Munchen head-unit.

Presumably your car wasnt bose? I think the OP took that you'd fitted 4ohm speakers in place of the originals still connected to the bose amp.
Non-bose cars have 4ohm speakers anyway afaik. Our avant certainly does anyway.
Bose equipped saloons have rear door speakers and the shelf speakers are used as subwoofers, all avants have rear door speakers, and bose avants have a sub in one of the side panels iirc.

Hi mate. What speakers would you recommend as OEM style replacements? Looking to upgrade them in my 1.8T as the standard ones are rubbish.
Also, does anyone know how to keep a live feed to the head unit as it doesn't keep the settings. All the wires are connected at the back. Believe it's something to do with the red or yellow wires from the HU loom? Have a newish Kenwood with USB lead.
Any help much appreciated!

Depending on the age your car will either have the ignition live and switched live backwards, or the switched live will be missing all together.
Try swapping the red and yellow over.
I tried to fit some infinity speakers in my front doors, but found that the adaptor frames squashed the foam suspension round the cone which made then sound rubbish. You'd need to either carefully choose the speakers, or make some kinda spacer.

The dog ate my rear speakers. I kid you not. Mind you, I had locked him in the boot at the time, so what did I expect!
I bought some speaker adapters for my front doors too... and they didn't fit either! They were rubbish!
I ended up hacking them to bits and butchering (I mean 'manufacturing') a spacer/adapter up so that they were installed neatly and fitted properly. But, because the cross-overs had to be located towards the rear of the door-card, I had to cut away some of the foam stuff in the door itself. There's not a lot of room back there!
The rear ones slotted straight in with the adapters though.

Yes, the plastic adapters never fit properly, especially the Autoleads rubbish. I made my own from 2 thicknesses of MDF. But they are not an easy build as the mounting posts are at right angles to the door card but the hole in the door card is angled upwards. So the holes on the adapters have to be angled which makes lining them up correctly a right pain.
