it has halogen lights at the min but am considering upgrading to hid's but what type are my current bulbs? h7's??

so am i right in thinking that the bulbs for dipped and main beam are both h7's but separate? cheers

As an alternative why not try uprated bulbs like Osram Night Breaker or Phillips Ex-treme as I gather this will give much better light than standard for a fraction of the cost at around £15 a pair.

I used the osram bulbs but they only lasted around 12 months and for the price i personally wasnt happy and they were not much better either to be honest .
Hello fellow enthusiasts.
I've got "Osram Xenarc" in "low light" portion.
Recently I started receiving that bulb with red cross and some freaky looking German command display in that little window on dashboard. Its really intimidating sometime, isn't?
I just fixed "break lights" signal for a bulb at passenger's side a few month ago. Clever mounting structure!!
So the "low lights" kinda intermittent on and off but last 2 days was off all the time. So my lovely wife got written warning for that last night, and here I am: googled some instruction, got replacement ($130 for the bulb, made in DE, Denmark I'd guess) and began sacral dancing in front of the piece of precious machinery.
Pulled out the headlight, unhooked all these wire latches off, pulled out the victim, replaced it, turned lights on - Jesus with Rusty Shmeisser! It works!
Packed everything back, start the car, changed parking - still works.
Later tonight my wife decided to run away for some shopping and ... yes, my good fellas, the s... comes back again. She was driving back home on hi-beams

I did not rushed down to fuse box by 2 reasons: first - I don't even know where it is; and second, ones fuse blows - then light is gone permanently, not back-and-forth, right?
I've had almost the same intermittency with my "break light". It was about the same on and off for sometime. So thats why I ordered damn bulb right away.

Sorry Kolyan, I've tried to make sense of your post I really have, but I just can't seem to get my head round it.
Can you please explain the problem again? Are you saying your dipped beams (the projector) keep failing? Or is the problem with the city lights (side lights)?

Well, I was tried to get some humor into the situation. Sorry.
What happened is after replacement it still not working. So I have to go down the food chain I'd guess. Like relays, fuses, wires, light turning knob.
So my Q: does anyone ever experienced something like this and what did they found?
The lights that I am talking about are "low lights", may be driving lights. Thats what guy at Autozone told me. Yes, they are kinda with a lens and when car starts they move a bit. What is the "city lights" then?

side lights (city lights) - first setting on your light knob
driving lights (dipped beams) - second setting on your light knob
main beams (bright as ****) - second setting on your light knob with indicator stalk bushed forward.

I have a similar problem in that I've changed bulbs and checked fuses but the problem of no low beams on both sides remain. Has anyone come across this before and do you knw how to resolve this? I have a B6 A4 2002. Cheers

It sounds like you've got xenons, the problem could lie with the ballasts (the metal battery pack looking thing which sits underneath the headlight).

Don't know about anybody else, b ut I've got a 2004 3.0Q B6, and I've got H7's for dipped and H9's for main beam! They've got different plugs and everything for the main (full) beam.
I know this as I've just taken my headlights out to check my bulbs as I had a misplaced bulb on the drivers side.
I don't have xenons and I don't think I have the HID conversion.
