I've been meaning to go through this for a while, but prompted by Staz, here's a selection of pics showing how the AMI system works with MY10 A3/S3s.

It's night time here atm, so the pics aren't the best, but they should be okay.

AMI-01.jpg

iPod sits inside the glove box in a space that probably takes up as much space as the old CD stacker. There's a tray for the iPod and a cable goes from the iPod to the flap shown to the left of frame.

AMI-02.jpg

Once connected, select the iPod by pressing the Media button and selecting Source.

AMI-03.jpg

The connectivity and structure is pretty much the same as the iPod itself, you just use the main button on the RNS-E to scroll through the options.

AMI-04.jpg

Trap for young players ... when connection is made to the iPod it automatically plays the first song in the first album of the first artist. So, it pays to doctor the artist title on at least one track in iTunes, otherwise your wife's ABBA collection starts to play, haha.

AMI-05.jpg

In this example I have selected the Artist grouping, scrolling through a loooooooong list using is a major PITA. When selecting numbers from the phone book it is possible to find an entry by selecting the first initial etc. It would be great if the AMI could do this too. Or be touch screen, but that is another matter altogether.

AMI-06.jpg

Select the Artist and all albums are shown. Just like on the iPod you can select to play all if you wish.

AMI-07.jpg

Scroll down one more level to access a full album.

AMI-08.jpg

Current song being played displayed in white with time elapsed shown.

AMI-09.jpg

Select the Control option to access repeat, shuffle options etc.

AMI-10.jpg

Track info, via Control screen.

AMI-11.jpg

Repeat options, via Control screen. The icon in the header, next to the iPod icon indicates the selected folder (album) will be repeated. When selected this repeat option stays active after selecting a new album or playlist.

AMI-12.jpg

If you press the Setup button below the main screen there is only one option available...

AMI-13.jpg

...and it looks like this. Still only shows time elapsed, and not time remaining as well.

AMI-14.jpg

This is what you see through the DIS. The track name doesn't scroll either, so its a bit cabbage having such a small number of characters in view.

If you have an iPod the AMI is a pretty nifty setup, albeit, like the iPod itself it does have some limitations.

A couple of caveats. As you can see from the first pic my iPod is pretty old skool now, so I'm not sure if a newer iPod a) has improved functionality and b) if it does if that can then be accessed via AMI. Stands to reason that it would.

I also have no other experience with other iPod connections, other than a simple aux in plug, so am not sure how good this system is compared to other offerings.

Any questions, please ask and I'll see if I can answer them or find an answer for you.

:beerchug:

Cheers
Liam

Hey we love old school ipods!!

I also have an iPod Photo (4th gen) and works just fine!

I`m not really sure which devices are supported by AMI or not

One thing is for sure, the graphics in the new RNS-e are absolutely fantastic!!!

Even without scrolling in the DIS, the AMI is 1000 times better than the stupid iPod dock!

Good job :)

Awesome mate. Thanks for that :icon_thumright:

Love your taste in music too!

Welcome change to the rns to get something they should of added years ago, but its nothing revolutionary tbh as audi are fairly slow these days with tech in mainstream cars, price tag is as always a complete & utter rip of.

Personally I'm more than happy with the SD slots, cant see ATM upgrading to newer rns with ami.

Aux in is very very basic & has a low level in comparison to the others on the unit, but as someone else said its a cheap car kit aswell, lol

Being new to this just got a double din cage ready to get rnse next, is ami built into the unit my10, so therfore unless i spend a fortune for a my10 unit i can get the chrome version and use something like the alpine kit to connect my ipod ,hope this makes sence cheers Ian

About flipping time - this should have been available when the 8p model was first introduced.

Definite improvement on the current implementation via the RNS-E. Useful post - thanks for the info.

I recently installed the Alpine Ipod interface and think the kit it awesome, i first installed the kufatec video in motion kit then the alpine kit. It gives full control of the ipod, you can use the rns-e controls to operate the ipod alonf with the steering wheel contols. It also comes with a remote control for ease of use.

Hi Lima,

I have a 2008 A3 with RNS-E & can this AMI be used with my HU & show the Ipod Menus?

A3 Lover

Nice one Liam, great heads up. As it stands I have used the Ipod dock twice due to its poor functionality, so this a definate step in the right direction. It may just be my ears, but I find there is a drop in volume between Ipod and SD/Radio in the current set up; do you notice anything like that with your system?

Oh, and subtle cover up on the Abba. You can't kid a kidder. :p

No I don't notice a volume drop.

Honest, it's my wife's ABBA album. I don't mind them, I guess, but I did cringe when Dancing Queen came blaring through the Bose the first time I plugged in the iPod.

:haha:

I never thought of doctoring an artists name so ABBA didnt come up because it does on mine as well, once track finishes if you've just selected to play a single track when it finishes it goes straight to the top of the artist pile and on comes dancing queen!

I have to say the thing I am most impressed with is the Sat Nav on the new RNS-E after a bit of playing with mine I discovered it had lane guidance and that you could change the view to be 3D which is great, I never had a car with the old one so these may not be new features but they are awesome.

For example if you are in a one way system in London (One way system in Wandsworth lets say) it tells you exactly what lane to be in and where on a little map on the top left hand side of the screen and when on a motor way when getting to your junction brings up a much bigger picture of the lanes with arrows showing exactly where you need to be!

Fantastic Sat Nav, thought I was going to miss my Garmin but no way! Just wish it had full post code support!!

Currently I think the best thing we can add to our RNSe, is a multimedia disc with TDT. We have access to a much more than an ipod (500GB and more), remote control and still have a TV receiver (TDT)

Example:

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1970316/art/emtec/movie-cube-q800-500-gb-us.html

It's been done a few times yeah. If you get the right kit you can control the HDD media functions with the RNS-E:

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=56723

I still want the same set up but then I also want an Andymac sub, a sports cat and DP, tinted windows, H&R springs.....etc....etc.....and a house.

Lima you should like this thread in the FAQs mate. It's a very useful thread :icon_thumright:

I have the AMI set up with an 32gb ipod classic. With so much music to search through it would have been great for Audi to enable an alphabetical search (like the phone number search). Its a pain to have to scroll through the albums particularly if the name starts towards the end of the alphabet - or am I missing something!

No, you're not, and you're right, it' a pain in the ****! :beee:

That's a shame. With the RNS-E there always seems to be a lack of that extra function which would make things perfect.

Yeah I admit 2x 32GB is tempting but not for the extra money right now.

could some one take a day time photo of there 2010 RNS-E please?

Im interested in the feasibility of swapping the facia from my 2008 A4 RNS-E onto a 2010 A3 RNS-E and retro fitting AMI into my 2006 A4 B7

ey I have this RNS device in my S3 (July 2009) but in the dealer they installed me the "ipod preparation" instead the AMI, then my question is, is it possible to buy and install the AMI replacing the "ipod preparation" ?

thank you and regards

If you have the new rns-e mk2 with the media button then yes, if its the rns-e mk1 then no.

Does the iPod to AMI cable come with it, or do you have to buy it separately?

Pretty sure is a seperate componet which means an additional cost.

Great thread. Very helpful when I was making my decision on an A3. I do have a question, Lima.

Do you have to unplug your iPod and plug it back into the AMI cable regularly for the AMI to recognize it? On my new 2010 A3, I have to do that. After a few times using it, the iPod comes up 'unrecognized' by the AMI. A quick unplug-replug brings it back.

I'm using an original 160 gb iPod classic with up-to-date firmware.

Thanks.

Very useful thread - im about to order my first S3 with this included!

I do have one question tho, if my iphone is connected to play music does anyone know if the bluetooth phone function within the car will still work for calls etc?

Anyone have the part number please?

Just in case anyone needs to know, the AMI/ipod is cable for the A3 is 4F0 051 510 K. It also has a blue collar around the end of the cable.
