Retrofitted cupholder

...The US version includes a console cupholder which takes two sizes; standard size and mega-jumbo-lardass-size.

I've been thinking what to do with the (useless) card holder, but as a cupholder, it'd still be much less useful than the center console version.

Don't know if the Mainland European/LHD cars have a better cupholder than the UK versions or not, but the US center console cupholder absolutely rocks.

Maybe the US center console would be a worthwhile upgrade?

I think the UK cup holder is fine. Most drinks are no wider than a can of drink, and it's big enough to take one of them.
I've no need for the coin/card holder as coins/cards can go in loads of places i.e. ashtray or.... and excuse me for being so radical... pockets!!!
However, drinks....... the car is not so accommodating!

Here's a pic of the US center console:

-I didn't have the mini-USB cable to upload it the other day, also sorry that it's mega-dirty after a weekend at the beach...

Under the armrest there's a sort of a 'roll-top-desk' hideaway top, which then reveals two sockets: one for the cigarette lighter, and the other for a 12V accessory. (They're differently fused with the accessory socket being rated at a couple of amps I understand... so plugging the cigarette lighter into the wrong hole will probably pull a fuse!)

If I get chance, I'll make a ten-second video of the hideaway roll-top. It's in the above picture, but I've got stuff sitting on it. -The gold circle is resting directly on it in the above image.

haha... yep cupholders in elbowland!!
And even worse, only one of them is big enough to hold a normal drink. The other one is maybe big enough to hold a.... pencil!!

But saying that, it is pretty useful being in elbowland. I don't have an arm rest so I put a bottle in there and use that!!

Our cigarette lighter socket is next to the hand brake. The cup holder being under the arm rest is a bit silly to be honest. Plus if I put a plastic bottle in it rattles constantly!

resurrecting this again too.
Best place to get a cupholder?
Just ebay??

Is this correct part number for 2006 a3?
8P0 862 534 B
cheers

Great resurection :respekt:- never saw this post despite spending many sleepness night browsing ASN!

Does anyone know if a Symphony Stereo prevents this mod from happening as I could have sworn I have read somewhere that cupholders couldn't fit the double din stereos... now I'm really tempted to try this as I miss my A3 cupholder too much!

Can anyone recommend a place to get hold of one for an '07 S3? Tried ebay but appear to have no luck... Sorry for asking the 'newbie' questions.

Thanks
Pii

Can still be fitted. But it won't be a straight swap as the trim on the front of the cupholder is wider than that of your cardholder, and therefore won't fit into the hole in your dash.
It's quite a simple fix though; all you need to do is remove both trims, file down the front edges of the actual cupholder where the trim fits on to, and then push on your cardholder trim. Just do it bit by bit and keep trying to push the trim on until it fits properly.

The other thing you will need to do it file down the cupholder's arm as well, otherwise when you open it it won't lock in place.
It's hard to explain where you need to file but it will become apparent once you fit it and open it as you will notice it knocking against your dash.
I got round to doing this last bit though, and just stop the cupholder from collapsing with my other hand when I put a drink in it. Not ideal when driving though!!

Yeah i wasn't sure the A4 once right and for 24 quid I think I could pop down to Audi and get one for about 30.

Yeah this post was what made me realise it was possible but I wasn't sure if the Symphony impacted more than the RNSE for this - just paranoid!

Thanks for the repsonses guys - think I might take the plunge is any breaker comes back anything good.

Is the part 8P0 862 534 B the right one then?

Thanks again guys.

Guys this write up might help you identify which parts need trimming and why.... this was my MY09 S3 retro fitted with a MY07 A3 cupholder

http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?82418-Cup-holder-mod-for-facelift-A3-S3&p=840071&highlight=#post840071

If you have the pre upgrade style facia then you wont need to bother with trimming the front of the mechanism, just attach the coinholder front.

(Hmm link doesn't appear to work.. cut and paste URL in to new browser is the only way I can get it to work.)

Thanks for the advice!

Thank god I wont need to trim it down like yours!!

How does the illumiation work by the way?

Hi Guys

I have a question for thoses that retrofitted the cupholder: Does the icon illuminate?

My car tray currently lights up and this works from what appears to be a plug a the back of the tray. Assuming 8P0 862 534 CPR is the correct part, does this have somewhere where you can connect the plug back onto? I've attached some photos of the car tray which hopefully explains what I am asking.

The plug at the back which needs to be refitted ??

So really I am thinking the cupholder needs to have a plug bit at the back. Apologies for not getting the terminology right but I'm a bit of a mechanical ******! :uhm:

Thanks
pii

Hi Pii,

The cupholder that i used - part no. 8P0 862 534C 5PR has the same type of connector on the back just like the coinholder as show in your picture. It was just a case of unplugging the power cable from the original illuminated coinholder and connecting it to the connector on the back of the cupholder. The icon on the coinholder front facia (now fitted to the cupholder mechanism) will illuminate as it did when the original coinholder mechanism was fitted.
Simples !:icon_thumright:

R7SAN - Thanks for the reply! I'm off to get a cupholder!!! Yipee :jump:

Just did this mod, very nice and easy to do. Like RobinA3 said, mine seemed a bit sunk (maybe filed a bit too deep?) but a lolly stick and a bit of paper sorted this out

Just done the exact same mod last night actually. Well worth it

cant find the cup holder for less than £25! WAAAT, do not want to pay that lol.

JJ.

Good mod - I try not to drink in the car to keep it clean so will resist the temptation. Use my card holder to put a spare credit card in case I fill up and forget my wallet.

i would del you comment about your credit card mate, don't know who looking at these threads.

but not worth someone breaking into your car

Hi everyone, I know this is an old thread. I really want to do this mod. I have searched on eBay and cant seem to find the correct part for my car. Can anybody point me in the right direction where I can buy online assuming 8PO 862 534C is the correct part number for my Audi A3 2007?

Thanks

Yeah i seen that. Thank You.

I just want to know where I can buy the cupholder online.

You're welcome!

Just got in from work and received this. It does not seem to be the complete unit. It is same as in the ebay pic. Clever angle on the ebay pic to hide all the damage, but I should have known lol.

Anyways, its not the same as the one in the pic on the 1st page of this thread... Well it is but I cant fit it as it is not the full unit. Any ideas anyone? A lot of hassle for a little mod.

:(

Fooled me, the crafty *******s! Didn't know they came apart.

I hope you left them **** feedback. :gun2:
