M25 and the M11 will be equipped with Point to Point speed devices from August 1st 2009*

Once you enter the M11 for instance, you pass a camera that takes a photo of your car and registration number and records the exact time, upon exit another camera takes a photo of your car and registration number, and records the exact time you leave the motorway.

The Cameras are set at fixed points. With both the start time and finish time, a computer is able calculate the time it has taken for you to travel between the two fixed points, and works out your average speed and how many miles you may have travelled over the national speed limit and If you have completed the clocked journey too fast you are given a speeding ticket.

At the present time the national speed limit for motorways is 70 M.P.H. For every minute that you drive over the speed limit you will incur a fine of £30, and one point on your licence. The fines will be issued automatically there will be a variance of 10% for 3 months, which gives a top speed of 77mph until the end of October 2009.

There will be cameras fitted at all exit points along the motorways. Remember that now with the new legislation; fighting speed camera fines is almost impossible. You must prove the device is faulty and if you are not a technician working on them, you have no chance of beating the fine.

Ok yeah so why exactly do we have cars on our roads that can do 150-200mph but limits are 70mph, maybe mr gordon fecking brown can explain that one.

What's your source? Sounds like scaremongering to me!

If that happened in Europe (the rest of !) it would be a riot ! Slowly, slowly the government is pulling your trousers down and stick it deep where the "sun-don't-shine" with NO grease ! Soon we'll be paying the air we breathe...and there nothing an individual can do!

"For every minute that you drive over the speed limit you will incur a fine of £30, and one point on your licence."
Well that's ******** for a start. Breaking the speed limit is one thing, average speed camera's actually make more "sense" than pointless Gatso/Truvelo devices but they can't then prove how long you were breaking the speed limit from an average reading. And they certainly can't change the law and issue fines/points based on something that's totally unproveable.

what a load of crap. when was the last time you averaged 70mph on a motorway?

Ooh just before I drove to italy as couldnt be assed to drive any faster, was in no rush & got 62mpg, couldnt believe my eyes

you have no chance of beating the fine.

I can only hope that if this exists then they're facing the front of the card as I can't recall the last time I went down the M11 under 70mph. I commute on my motorbike and hence speed limits enforced with this sort of camera don't apply to us two wheelers :arco:

Think its a hoax, its very similar to an Australian speed camera hoax that was doing the rounds a while back....

There are Specs cameras on the M11 and M25 tho.

Has anyone ever been or heard of someone that has been caught out by these? When you look at the bottom of the camera where its been bolted to a concrete plinth sometimes theres a cable showing but more often than not there isnt.

If this turned out to be true I can just see it now.....
Hundreds of cars poodling along at 30mph trying to compensate for the 100mph burst they've just done.
It'd cause havoc, and therefore untrue!!

Average speed cameras (or SPECS) are not a hoax and certainly not new.

There are some points raised that are true however:
1. They photograph the front so currently bikes currently can avoid them.
2. The £30 and 1 point thing is rubbish

They have a tolerance so they will not issue a fine for averaging 71mph for instance.

There are 301 permanent SPECS cameras in the UK and 271 temporary ones currently. There will be more and more installed and they will take over completely from all other cameras on motorways and dual carriageways in due course. Whilst i do not agree with speed cameras either, you may as well get used to them. They have been around for 17 years and are going nowhere. GPS tracking is already here and how long before it is used to track speed? DHL and Royal Mail are currently looking into this.

Other companies are already keeping logs of the speed their drivers do from GPS data. Have been for years.

Ultimately if the UK government wanted to restrict us all to 70 they could. and the money generated from fines would more than pay for the system. The fact that they don't enforce it, and that fact that cameras such as those on the M25 are only operational when speed restrictions are in place, tells me that they don't actually want everyone to go at 70 on the dot.

Thats because motorists are voters  Not to mention that motorways are the safest of all roads.....Oh...I just did !
