Hi guys,

I’m hoping someone can help me out of a sticky predicament here.

A family member has a 1998 audi A4 1.8 petrol which required a replacement engine.

So I sourced one from a breakers after getting a print out from Audi for the type engine the car currently has. (ADR).

I was sent what the breakers claim is an ADR engine but at least two mechanics says it’s not the same as the one currently in the car. There are no markings on the replacement engine that suggest its an ADR engine.

Only parts number of head and block. Is it possible to find out from these if this is an ADR engine or not?

Part numbers; 058 103 373 A
And 058 103 021 E

My problem is the breakers wont take it back if it is an “ADR” engine even if its different to the one in the car currently. The only way I can get them to take it back is if it’s not an ADR.

Can someone please help?!!! :(

If you take the engine cover off and look on the cylinder head casting close to the camshaft pulleys it will have a tab wich has stamped the engine code on ! Its on the right as you look at the head close to the intake manifold... If it has seperate coils its more likely not an ADR but if it has a main coil with wires running to the other coils its definately an ADR...

Thanks for that, I found the little tab that has 'ADR' pin stamped on it.

It's there only ever one type of 'ADR' engine? Is there possibilty that this could be an ADR engine but still be the wrong type for my car?

ADR is ADR sadly. probably differnt manifolds etc on later ones, but the unit itself is the same. For a double look at the engine number, it will start ADR******
