Eggy smell and engine management light

Hi guys,

got a a3 3.2 v6 dsg. Engine management light has come on, revs are bouncing around on idle and getting a strong eggy smell from engine bay!

Any ideas?

lack of water in the battery causing it or "The sulphur smell from the exhaust, is actually caused by running the engine/cat convertor slightly lean for long periods and then running under a rich condition (ie going up a hill under heavy load) This is when the sulphur smell (rotten egg) is produced.


Under relatively lean conditions, the sulphur found in gasoline is converted to sulphur trioxide, then during the rich running condition the sulfur trioxide is converted into hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) within the catalytic converter.


Audi of America issued a service bulletin Group 24, #92-04 which detailed this problem. They list the cause as : the gasoline sulphur content and the characteristic of catalytic convertor to store sulphur compounds and release them during rich engine running conditions.


Switching gasoline brands may help. The Oxygen sensor may also need to be replaced to correct a fuel injection mixture problem"

I had this last week. Lumpy at tickover but fine once reving. You need to get the fault code but mine was the lambda sensor. About £200 at Audi fitterd and tested.

i'm also getting a petrol smell and a whooshing noise everytime i press the accelerator. Is this safe to drive to the garage tomorrow?

Mine smelt of petrol at tickover as well....I drove it 20 miles to audi guildford no problem...

so you are saying that if you never topped it up with water the smell of sulphur would magically disappear and not enter the cabin ?

Its not likely as it has a sealed lid to its compartment and is maintanance free anyway. Cant see how this would give him a lumpy tickover either..

at the end of the day its guess work but can he drive it saftly to a garage........well i wouldnt put my head on the block

It's probably a faulty coil pack, causing an overrich situation, causing the cat to spew the fumes

turned out to be faulty front lambda sensors. The front two. The guy at the garage quoted my £400 including fitting!!

Is it me or is this far too expensive?

My invoice was for one but it was only £74+vat...the rest (£149) was "investigation" as they put it...

That was for my A3, 3.2 DSG 2004.
I used Audi Guildford.

I just checked the invoice and the part was actually £93 but i got 15% discount because the old girl is over 4 years old ie: £79.14p.
