Hi everyone,

I'm currently on the lookout for a B5 S4 saloon. Preferably a post 1999.5 model but I'm not fussed.

A 1998 model with 48k on the clock is on autotrader.co.uk at the moment but the asking price is £8k which is high, especially for an early model, and even with that low mileage. In fact it's the most expensive B5 S4 on Auto Trader.

http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/advert.action?R=200924336110272

It's been Superchips tuned to 300 BHP apparently. Haven't spoken to the dealer yet (will ring them tomorrow) so I'm not sure what else has been done to it.

What do people think? Is £8k too much?

My budget is supposedly about £7k but I could stretch for a really nice example as I'm planning on keeping it for a while. Would I be better off going for something cheaper with higher mileage instead of paying over the odds?

low mileage isnt everything, this car could have never had a chance to warm up properly. Better off going for something with a slightly higher miles and a newer car. That is way too much for an S reg 11 year old car. As mentioned before in other posts dont rush it, I would defo hold out for a facelift car you should easily get one for that money. You will be amazed how much difference there is between them.

HTH

looks a nice car that one,,,same as mine, there is a black one for £9984 lol, its harder to find a nice b5 s4 than it is to find an rs4 which are supposed to be the rare ones 19 rs4's on the trader only 15 s4's. i paid £7495 just over a year ago a facelift V plate 60k 1 owner every bill from new all the major work done early serviced every 5k new brakes+tyres mint condition 6months warranty and 6months tax, full mot so the advert above looks a about right to me

just had a proper look its horrid mate dont even phone about it pre facelift no leather wrong colour in my opinion and the wrong boot spoiler i think, no bose stereo you'd regret that one when you learn more about them go see that silver 1 rasA4 has found you

Thanks rasA4, I think I knew that in my mind but just wanted somebody to agree with me!

That silver one on Pistonheads looks very clean. Will give the guy a ring.

s4marsh: Would love an RS4 but I can't stretch to £16k lol :(

i'd rather a s4 with rs4 power i'm not into the avants i looked for months to find the right S4 got it remapped and love it to bits and hopefully the prices will start going up for them soon now they're getting on

you can get a real good one for 7k large mate, search everything not just auto trader and pistonheads. i found mine on free ads where the guy forgot the ad was up as he couldnt sell the car, went to see it, 2000 (x plate) facelift, bose, parking sensors, nogaro blue, recaro leather blue alacantra............4.5k im one of the lucky ones mate and had a massive bargain, all major work done at no expense with full Audi service history:)

take your time on this one mate as it took m 6mnths to find it but i wanted a certain spec so i held out for it. defo get a facelift and get the recaros mate they set the car off summin else. happy hunting

p.s if i spend 5k on the car i can prob get it to about 550bhp which is more than ample over the RS4 and still 5k cheaper lol

cant say this enough take your time though what about this one?

I would not hold me breath about these "low" mileage cars ! I have 135K diesel passat wich looks much better than that s4 ! Wear on the front carpet mats and on the carpet next to the foot rest is an indication of clocking. Unless the car has only 1 owner from new i wouldnt wouch for the genuine mileage ! The cars with digital odometers are soo easy to clock yet returns big financial gains when you consider spending 60-80 quid for the "mileage corection" ! I would look for a car as close to the 100k mark as thats what a car of that vintage should have ! Nobody buys a car to keep on the driveway in bubble-wrap...

£8k is way too much for that!

I reckon i'd only get £8k for my ming blue K04'd 98 saloon (<100k) with all the toys.

buy the cleanest S4 you can find then buy that crash damaged RS4 from autotrader with the 450bhp remap and movit brakes and get busy with the spanner.

the selling off of the spare parts would pay for one of the cars at least

Cheers docurley I'll keep an eye on that forum and see what comes up.

S4twiggy sounds like you got a bargain there mate, very nice looking car.

Def not gonna rush into it now as it looks like you can get a mint one for £7k which is good. Might even have some change left over!

the pedals and carpet look sound, mine are just wearing on the corners now 67k the seats look very fresh and the condition of the driver side seat bolster is better than mine and looks unmarked, i did 5k in my car last year same as the previous owner so there are still genuine low mileage cars available and i do bubble wrap mine too i like looking at it as much as driving it:greyrs4:

Oh yea let us see a pic of it then, this i got to see. :sign_pics:
How do you upload pictures ? I got a few low resolution on me phone... Let me know and i will post them ?!

you will need to sign up to www.photobucket.com (free) then upload them then copy the

The best part is that i only paid 550 quid for it with a cambelt failure ! It owes me 1500 quid as it stands after rebuilding the v6 Tdi engine and fitting all genuine belts/rollers/tensioners, a new battery, etc. I did all the work myself in 2.5 days ! Its also fully specced (for a passat !) with electric heated seats, auto dimming mirrors, 6 speed manual, rear blind, factory xenon lights, privacy glass, cruise control and IT's mint, absolutelly no wear inside/out ! just a few stonechips on the front bonnet ! If i clock the car it would easily pass as having "only" 50K !

Here you go uploaded for you

Any inspection welcome :)

Hey Nez, what's your reason for selling? Looks very clean.
#

I need money my friend also the insurance is expensive for me as I am 24 old :( there is nothing wrong with the car you can take it to any mech's you like everythng is perfect I just need the money to pay some of my loan's :(

If I wasn't need of money I wouldn't sold it for sure its a great car all the bits as been done Incl the Timing belt, water Pump, Tensioner and full service done 3 weeks ago.

if you need more information just give me a call :)

@ bon - I would try and get that car for as close to your £7K budget as you can, if that's what you want, you migh tempt the seller meeting halfway. You obviously want a low miler. Lots of people like you, lots who would like a low miler but won't pay the premium, lots of people who genuinly don't want a low miler.

I like a low miler and paid TOP money for mine about 3 years ago when it has 28K miles on it. So you have to go with what is right for you. Some rubbers and bushes will go with age and so will regardless of mileage. Doesn't mean a high miler will have had tem changed yet. I've had all my drop links changedd for instance as, as an owner of a low mileage example I am fastidious about such things. Apart from those sort of things, I otherwise enjoy an almost as new B5.

Mine has 42K. It's not for sale, but can be bought ;) Sutble mods, essentially stock looks with H&R arbs (with subframe support brackets) to tighten up the handling, MRC tuned to ~335-340BHP and Porsche 993tt brakes up front to stop. Lots of other detail not listed, lots of history and paperwork etc.

I'll be at Audis in the park today!

I personally think people concentrate far too much on the cars reported mileage. The cars actual condition is far more important than what the odometer says, as the car above shows. Craigs S4 cost £4750 last year, has double the mileage and doesnt have any perceptible wear on the inside like the supposed low mileage car up there.

Theres other advantages too, for instance Craigs had just had the timing belt done.

You also have to question why the mileage is low. Perhaps it was a weekend car, which might be fine as long as it was used properly, similarly though it could have been "the wifes" car that gets driven 2 miles to the school and back every morning and not used properly at all.

As GSB also stated some of the bushes and suchlike deteriorate with age as well as mileage, so a 10year old car could still need them done, even if its only done 45k.

Personally, there are some nice S4's around for 5-6k, and i'd be looking to buy something around that price, then use the remainder of your budget to bring the car up to scratch with new bushes and any other bits like suspension that probably needs changed, as well as replacing the usual culprits on the engine itself, rather than spend every last penny on a supposed "low mileage" car only to find it still needs things done to it.

@aragorn Fair points about the very low mileage examples. They could have sat garaged for 5 days a week or like you say barely warmed up each day.

@GSB1: Nice photo. Shows the car off very well.
