What Tyres? 235-40-18 Y

I have a Audi A4 Avant Quattro and its coming time that the tyres need to be replaced - all 4! :sob:

At the moment there is a set of 4 Dunlop Sport Maxx, and currently on e-tyres they are £178.30! I can’t really afford £713.20 for a set of tyres in one hit.

What do you guys use on yours? What do you recommend?
My driving is mainly motorway, and occasionally i give it some boot! And do about 35k a year.


If I decide to stop with the Dunlop Sport Maxx it looks like i will have to swap two this month and two the month after, as two of them are very low at the moment.

Hi mate in the same postion at the moment and im going to be buying x4 of the new VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA, currently one of the best high performance but affordable tyres out there.

Just look at the reviews mate, these things out perform dunlop and continental and they are half the price, they have been recommended on every forum from scooby forums to porsche forums.

Just been reading the reviews, and your right! People seem to think they are ok!

Might just give them a go!

What are you plans for getting them fitted? Just called a local garage, (ATS) and they say they wont fit tyres purchased from another place.

ATS i wouldnt touch them with a stick, any company that refuses to fit tyres just because they cant screw you with there own silly prices wants avoiding like the plague.

I have a few local garages near me that will fit em for about £50.00
 
I rate the Goodyear Eagle F1 asymetrics that came top of Evo magazines tyre test in 2007. I paid £108 each (incl. vat and fitting) for 235/45 18's and they are almost a grippy in the wet as in the dry and seem to wear quite well.

The Vredesteins came 2nd so still seem pretty rated:

Whatever you decide to buy just avoid any budget tyres especially Fullrun - my car came with some on and they were just dangerous in the wet!
 
If it's any help Steve - I've got the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta's - they're absolutely incredible, once they're scrubbed in.

Just be aware though - cos of the 'special tyre wall construction' you have to run them at 45psi, but it doesn't affect the ride.

really? 45 psi jesus is that ok to be running them on that sort of pressure! what about when fully laden?
 
Looks like i am going to get four of the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA!

Cheers for all your help guys! Will be getting them ordered next week and i have found a local garage to fit them for £13.00 a corner.

Audi quote 42 psi all round on my avant unladen and 46 psi fully laden, i thought yours would have been the same dazmo?? I was surprised when i saw it but put it down to the weight of the 3.0L engine.

Nah fully laden mine is recommended to be 40 psi and around 36 psi normal. I tend to run it on around 38 psi anyway

All the 4wd cars i've had in the past have run Hankook ventus k104 silica's, excellent ride and grip in both wet and dry!!

Coming in a bit lat on this one but here goes.........

39 psi I find after 3 years of ownership is the best for me.

Tyres.......
.conti's when new, 16k miles for the set - noisey
.GY asseys next which were ok, 14k the set.
.Kumho KU31's, I have just done 16k ON THE FRONTS ONLY. They are great tyres and only £70 something a corner.

I have also do to really good reviews put Falken 452's on wifeys ED30 GTI and they are amazing tyres and only £70 a corner.

Folk can get wrapped up in badge snobbery on rubber which IMO is money wasted. It wasn't many years ago Bridgestone were considered a less than premium brand.

audi upgrades
Several RS4 owners on rs246.com have the Sessantas.

Latest reports say that they are good in the dry, but can be a real handful in the wet.
 
Hmmm I hadn't heard that they were bad in the wet, are they worth the extra money over the falkens I wonder then? :think:
 
Slightly relaated question on tyres, need to replave all four on my 3.2 A4 Cab soonish (235/40 ZA 18 - currently Pilot Sports). The info on the tyre wall also says extra load, I seem to remember reading that any replacement tyre must be extra load as well - is that correct ?

Yes it is mate, if your recommended to use extra load for you car then that is what you must use due to the weight and as you have a 3.2 cab you will definatly need extra load as it is a heavy car.

Running mine at 45PSI now, they were at 38 when they were fitted.

Where have you seen that it says they need to be 45PSI?

Had them fitted on my old A3 T Sport, great grip wet/dry and they look nice also - Factor in the price and what more could you want?!

These came 2nd in the AutoExpress Tyre Awards, can't remember which came 1st but i can remember they cost around £80 more per tyre....!

£80 per tyre where did you get them that cheap the cheaspest i can find them is about £93 per tyre
 
So now we are well and truly into the winter, how is everyone finding the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA's in the wet, even on the manufacturers site they are listed as a summer tyre?
How many miles are they lasting for on the front?
Ive got four(4) nasty budget tyres on at the moment that i inherited with the car and im looking to replace them.
 
Just ordered the Vredesteins from Camskill, they appear to be on offer at the moment. 2 Tyres for £185 delivered.

Should get them monday and my mate will fit them for me.

Where do you live? Winter tyres tend to be for occasional snow and ice, not the sort of weather we see in the UK.

So someone from the Tyre manufacturer and tyres and accessories wants you to buy twice as many tyres per year than you do at the moment. Shocker!

They are noisy in the extreme but are very good in snow as I found out when living in NZ. If you have the cash for two sets of wheels, as most people who have to use these tyres by law, please do. Otherwise may I suggest driving to the conditions?
 
I put summer Yokohama tyres on my previous car - a VW Golf r32 - last year.

It was a nightmare. Even travelling at 10mph in the snow on a slight downhill gradient - there was no steering at all, let alone traction. Ended up in a field - where the car unfortunately stayed for 2 days until the snow thawed, and I had to walk home!

It is was one off times that you really question - why did I buy summer tyres, when I damn well knew I couldn't afford two sets!!!!

Never again, I say, Never Again!

I'll wait until after winter before I buy - like Jaygeezer871 - I'll wait to see if there is any more feedback on the VREDESTEIN ULTRAC SESSANTA.

Oh, by the way Boulders - living on the edge of the Pennines - I do go looking for snow - 'cause what else would I buy a quattro for?

I have only had my audi for about 6-8 months and have not yet experienced quattro in the snow.

Anyone on here used theirs? i would just like to know how they have got on even with summer tyres?
 
I had mine in the snow last year, and it was amazing... I had some Dunlop SP Sport Maxx all round.

It was really good, could go down lanes that only 4x4's would go, and do hill starts with no problems in the snow, even went onto an empty car park to do some playing about.

Really put a smile on my face as people who do not know Audi and the quattro seemed to look confused!

The main problem was everyone else, not knowing how to drive in snow and holding everyone up.

Dont get me wrong, was not speeding around at 60, but kept my respect up for the conditions and my A4 never let me down!

I am hoping for snow again this year!
 
Stevehall....i notice from your posts that you use the term 'ok' for the vreds,.....is that all they are, ok?I need to change my bridgestones soon (shyte in the damp at the mo, f&*k nose what theyll be like in the snow)) and dont want to waste over 700 squid!
