been in a crash and now thinking?

my mate was driving his 306 and aproached a corner going 90. in my car i can do this corner at 70mph. well he slammed on his brakes and turned at the same time:S and just sent his back end out. at 80mph. he just panicked and shoved the wheel the over way causing more trouble. luckily none of us where hurt but his 306 was writing off. the back left quarter was mashed up.!
since then though ive been thinking is it worth spending the 1000's for a new suspension which would encourage me to take corners faster. kinda had my confidence took away a lil bit lol..anyone else had quite a near bad crash but got over it !.

or am i just being a complete vaggit :)
 
Mate....hate to say it but your going get slated for this....but all the best with whatever happens...
 
it dose knock your confidence way out, but you gotta get back on the horse and keep going, just rember it wasnt you driving you may have reacted diffent had it been you and nuthink would of happend apart from you going round a conner quickly lol
 
yeer..he seems think he handles it well. writing off your car aint handling it well! i am being a vaggit about it really!
 
plus you gotta think youve got quattro aswell makes your car alot more stable round conners and esp will always kick in befor anything gose too sideways
just go get in your car and go round the same conner loads of time untill you can do it full speed and full power then youll act asif it had never happend
 
is that what the esps for then.. its kinda a famous corner in portsmouth lol..a long sweeping exit off the motorway. when i goess around it full speed the esp light goes mental, i kinda of know what its for, but then kind of dont.
 
If you dont know what its for then i would suggest you learn very quickly before its more than the car thats wrote off just because you have quattro better suspension etc etc you still need to be able to drive the car properly and obviously at lower speeds end of lesson from old fart :racer:
 
the word to**er come to mind. drive sensible - why risk yours and the lives of others!!!!
 
He was more than likely referring to your mate.
Well ive decided togo down the brakes/suspension first.
I love the oem ride quality but want to know that when it comes to it i know the car will be able to handle how i want it to.
 
thats the route im taking to. and yes probally was.sorry.

im hoping for the new suspension to get rid of some of the understeer the car has.
 
your point is... you dont know what corner im on a bout. 90 could be normal.
 
Mate, no amount of suspension mods will make up for a crap driving style. One the the BASICS of car control is to get all your braking done BEFORE you get to the bend.

He's learnt his lesson though so Im not going to preach, but I'd say a lesson in basic car control would be money better spent that flash suspension.

I'd say upgrade though if you can afford it, my car handles like its on rails now but you still have to know what you're doing. A well set up car isnt an insurance policy against driving like a gibbon.

17 going around a corner at 90mph that you have already said you cant do any faster then 70mph is just shere inexperience, driving takes ages to get good at you cant just jump in a car after passing your test and drive flat out, it took me around a year before i was fully conferdent to drive my s3 properly and i have been driving more then just a few months!!
you dont need susspension yet just some experience then get the uprated stuff once you stop trying to impress your mates no one will be impressed if you kill someone,

I take it that its not a corner but more of a long bend

applying the brakes should of sent the weight to the front wheels and he could of if he were a competent driver done the manouvere

It would cost about a grand but its worth it
If you wish to be a racing driver do a trackday,I don't mind if you kill yourself but some poor innocent bystander always seems to end up dead.

90mph is 20mph over the top national speed limit and by the sounds of it atleast 30mph over the speed limit of that road. So 90 would never be normal.

Sounds young and foolish. Especially with passengers. Its quite simple, drive to your own abilities and weather conditions and most importantly so there is no risk to other people.

:applaus:well said. 90mph is over the speed limit on ANY UK ROAD and his crash kinda proves why.
 
I hope this crash keeps another foolish young driver off the roads for a little while, hopefully might learn a lesson. Probably won't though! I'm 23 so I'm still a young driver with a lot to learn. I don't know the lad but at 17 chances are he's not the best of drivers (needs to grow up a bit me thinks) oh well at least nobody was hurt!

First of all glad no one was hurt. Nothing against you mate, but i think your friend sounds like a idiot. 17, already crashed and trying to take corners at 90...There a place and time when you can put your foot down and have fun (track day).
When things go bad in your car best thing to do is keep your cool and dont automatically slam your foot on the brake and turn the steering wheel. Wont just write your car off could write yourself off aswell! Taking corners at 90mph sounds young and foolish as already said.
Hope he learnt his lesson and stops driving like that.

I take it the Police were not called to the accident and I guess if they were your mate would have more to worry about than the loss of his car. We are all young once (even me) and we have all drove like a tw*t at times. Most of mine was done on a motorbike so the only person I hurt was myself. If I was to give any advice I would advice slowing down and try to drive responsibly. I would definately not condone Markyp's thoughts of going around the corner faster and faster till you can do it flat out.....OMG I seriously hope you were joking!! There are plenty of track days and driving experience days where you can drive like a lunatic in relative safety and gain some good experience/enjoyment along the way. The last point I would like to make is if the police had attended the accident and deemed it due to dangerous driving, your mate would have been looking at 6 points and a re-test........I understand why insurance companies want an arm and a leg to insure young drivers now. Its just a shame all are tarred with the same brush.

Echo'ing what others have said, until your friend understands the basics he'll struggle to keep it on the road even at low speeds I would keep it under the limit next time.

Friction used for braking or accelerating cannot be used for cornering!
 
i know what you all mean.. but please some of you stop refferring as the driving being me and telling me once ive stopped showing off infront of my mates. i dont drive like a lunatic.

hes the same friend who has got 6 points and is taking a retest this month! i know hes an idiot and he wont learn from it.

no the poluice where not called as the car was still drivable, an hour later after using an hacksaw it was ok to drive again.

youve told me that before tom and ive nearly got the hang of it. do all braking before a corner, he didnt do the corner at 90. he approached it at that speed, then braked to about 65 mph, but being a bad driver he had never experienced over steer. then paniked.

but were all young once.
 
He just needs to feel very lucky that he didnt hurt himself of anyone else. I've had to drag too many young lads out of smashed up cars or deal with people who have been mopped up by someone driving to fast. Sadly though young lads (and girls!) punch above their weight when it comes to driving. Skill can run out very quickly if you know what I mean.

Yes we are all young once but plenty of us manage not to get into scrapes. Sounds like his motoring career is going to be very expensive for a good few years considering his driving form!. I've been driving 11 years now and up until a few years ago thought I was a 'tasty driver', how wrong was I?! :lmfao:

Throttle can be used too....as long as you can see the exit is clear......pin it and use all of the road :)
 
haha surely there is a limit to the level of friction on the tyres? If you are braking and cornering and exceed the threshold your gonna lose traction?

Of course. For road driving though there are many factors to it, road conditions, how heavy the vehicle is, road surface etc etc.

I could fly round a corner on a dry day with no fatties in my car, a week later it could be colder, my car loaded up and it wouldnt make it around at that speed. Thats where a bit of common sense comes into it though,...drive within the conditions that suit the road...which in this case the pug driver wasnt doing.....hence the car wreckage. I bet hundreds of people made it around the same corner shortly before without it all going nasty....wonder why.
 
Well not exactly, even in normal driving physics apply :p If its raining and you are taking a corner that normally can be taken at 30mph and you exceed the thresold of traction what happens?

You realise that you should not of driven so fast as the life drains away from you in the wreckage.
 
yes tom loll .hes now got 3 motnhs untill his mot runs out, his car, my old car want pass., hes awaiting a retest. worse he wants an audi 1.8t as a next car. !

it was BONE dry though! i still cant belive how it managed to do it.
 
So that was my point! If you understand the way forces work on a car you can be a better, safer driver. If I understand that the car will slip away at higher speeds in the rain I drive slower and take corners smoother, otherwise the car will skid out.
