Sline Fog Insert Grills - ideas and opinions

I've always felt that there's loads of improvement opportunity with the S-line Fog Insert Grills and to that effect it was pretty much the first thing I ever changed on the car.

As standard they come black - but my first 'change' was to use chrome effect film on the blades:

That stuff was so fickle and difficult to get a good finish I decided to 'colour code' the blades and fog surround:

Then I soon realised that this just made the car look like an SE version (no offense guys!).

I've not thought of these for a while but last night I tried a bit of a hybrid - with the inner blade painted satin black, and the outter bit colour coded:

This has accelerated some other ideas in my head so I'm about to order a brand new pair to have a play with, including properly integrated LED's, and the 'inner' blade being removed

I had to laugh when I got the prices though - you would think they'd be identicle, cos they are other than being 'handed'............but no, the drivers side is 75 pence dearer

Anyway - guess it's a case of watch this space

I genuinely admire your 'have a go and see what it looks like' approach, and is getting some good results.

I'll watch this space with interest...I'm particularly looking forward to the integrated LED approach - something I've given a bit of thought to!

Just out of interest, as you have done quite a few LED projects on your car, do you always use the same load resistor to overcome the DIS 'bulb failure' warning? I have LED day running lights using a radial SMT LED bulb, which looks fantastic, but despite trying several resistors, have not found the solution!

Its hard to see what you have done there in honesty mate.

The middle "bar" of the grille, could you install the LED strip behind that? Then you could drill out holes for each LED to shine through, would that work? I think that would look very OEM too

That's part of the idea - it's a bit of a tease.

The bottom left photo shows the grill as standard.........

The other photo's show that I've removed part of the 'cross bar'.

Watch this space for a future update.........but yet, of course, it includes LED's

Seriously though, it involves 52 resistors, some wire, some solder, time, and 52 LED's which aren't all the same colour

How do you link them into the standard wiring? Scotch clips? Also, I assume that along with the individual resistors, you need to put a load resistor in there too (or do you, as you are retaining the original bulbs as well?)

Is that black silicon that you seal the LEDs and resistors in with?

Nah - I've stripped and soldered, but have used scotch locks in the past.

As you said - no need for a 'led resistor' cos they indicators already have filament bulbs in there, and the DRL LED's are wired indipendantly anyway - so they come on with the ignition. Each led has a resistor though so they can cope with the 12 - 14v of the car!

The 'flashy bit' is done using a couple of relays

As for the seal, it's 'Tiger Seal' - the black adhesive which can be used to stick body kits onto cars.........as it sets nicely, even when you use it as a sealant. Sticky as heck before it drys though.
