Here's what's happened to a front disc on my A3, it failed the MOT on pitted front disc, on closer inspection here is why...

What i was wondering is what people think could be the cause, pad failure? disc failure?

The disc's are Black Diamond Combi (Drilled and Grooved), the pads are Green Stuff.

They have now been replaced with the same discs but with Black Diamond's Preditor Pads...

Oh and the discs and pads are 18 months old...

They look terrible mate, wouldnt touch green stuff myself, heard to much bad news about them! Your just confirming it for me!

Funny thing about it, is their tech (EBC) was trying to tell me that the holes in the disc heat the pad up and not help cool things down and that i had the wrong discs, and they can't say that the green stuff pads would work with Black Diamond Discs but do work with their own ones....

what are the bests pads then i heard green and red stuff are the best somewhere on the net ...was it here ???? what are good pads then ,,them ferodo pad i think there called are they any good

Well here the green stuff seem to have stuffed my discs! so wont be going back to them.

Av put Black Diamond Preditor pads on all round on mine and it stops well better then it did with the green stuff pads on, can't fault them... but then only had them on a few days so how long they last etc is to be seen.. but there quiet and about £50 a set, so not bad really.

i fitted some Galfer fast road pads to my Leon Cupra R, THEY ABSOLUTELY SHAGGED THE STD DISC`S!!! (discs looked very much like yours) also, previous experience with the green stuff was that they didn`t have that much bite to them ( especially not round the`ring`).

having looked at the pic`s again of your discs , my discs were even more shafted than yours, they had massive ridge`s running round them.
the pads worked really well but absolutely f**ked the discs. ended up replacing them with Brembo x drilled & Ferodo pads.

I am now using the OE style discs and Predetor pads and they are very good. I think the Green pads are so hard they shread the surface off the discs, look at the wear on the discs compared to the pads on the pics above

strange? i have exactly the same setup on my a3 1.8t and mine has been nothing but superb?i have had greenstuff pads before on other cars too and have never had any issues.
just seems really strange to me :uhm:

Red stuff pads are a higher temp pad and as such you loose some braking power before they build up heat. All the EBC anbd black diamond stuff is pretty cheap and you pretty much get what you pay for. Ferrodo DS2500 pads are well regarded as are Brembo, Mintex and Tar-Ox but you will pay more for their stuff.

had greenstuff pads and discs on my old 318 BMW and then my old A3 i had greenstuff pads with ATE discs also without issue.

If they were too abrasive wouldnt the wear be a bit more regular as opposed to it looking like some grit got caught on the pads etc and cut grooves?

Ferodo DS2500 pads are the best as far as i am concerned if you want a good fast road pad but they are not cheap. Tarox stuff gets good reviews and is a lot cheaper which are sold by AwesomeGTI. I wouldn`t touch any EBC green, yellow, red etc pads myself.

Absolutely agree....

For pads,Mintex,Ferodo and Pagid are superb but not cheap.

Brakes....AP and Brembo.

None of these are cheap but they don't end up looking like the things on the original post.

looks more like corrosive pitting on the disc and the pads not wear. Might be a stupid question but what do you use to clean your wheels. Also in the 18 months has the car sat for a long time

I had black diamond discs on my Evo.

They warped and buckled in less than 1000miles and i was taking it easy to bed them in too.

Never buying those discs again - were ****** expensive too!

I just stick to mintex now - not too expensive, never let me down and better than the oem stuff fitted!

I even have them now on my S3 set up with oem discs.

I have heard a few times that Black Diamond discs are not all that, maybe this is another case to chalk up to that effect

yea its one company that i never hear any good reviews about, i think regarding brakes, i would be happy to pay a lot more knowing that i got a product that will work and help me stop!

That is really a bad outcome mate, sorry. :-(
I race professionally, and have been all thru this, here my quick guide, with all I thing is what you want to know:
- Tar-Ox: is an old man in a very small, family run factory in the north of Milan. No good because they do not have the development engineers nor machinary to build at high spec.
- Mintex: they come from racing motorbikes, and that is their business. They are still learning cars, just drop it.
- Brembo: is top notch. Super engineers inside, CnC - last generation machinery to produce and high attention on procurement of raw materials.
- Ferodo - only pads: surely one of the best out there, but F2500 are ok for your wife to go shopping. You want F3000 from them, Audi's are heavy.
- Pagid - only pads: Awesome, on par with Ferodo, you only want RS19/29 compounds.
- Disks - C.T.F.: a small, but very well organized company that produces the best quality-to-cost racing disks you can buy. Has all Audi's, especially good are the composite disks, with center bellhouse and fluctuating braking suface. These disks make a 20-30% difference in braking power. I have them on my S3 8P.

I will not even mention green, red stuff, ebc or diamond something. Guys, your life is in the hands of your brakes!
What you want to do, and why the most aggressive pads: On road cars I really do not think that big brake conversions are the way to go. There are many components around the brakes, in the chassis-wheel assembly, that will be put in to situations of stress they have not been studied for. What you want is surely to get the best from your size braking assembly.
Save up, then buy composite disks on standard size, slotted.
Then buy the most aggressive pads for them, as stated above, because F2500, Pagid blue's, etc., have similar spec to the original parts, but last less.
Let me know how you get on!
