Six years ago i bought my first new A3 when they were few and far between, now on my third.
Now there are more chuffin Audi A3's about than Ford Fiestas !!!! Every man and his dogs got one.

Time for a change me thinks

Vauxhall Astra VXR ???? What do you think ???? Or what would you suggest now i am retired and got to watch the price !!

Astra VXR's look really nice, and 2nd hand ones seem to be pretty good value. However, they do suffer from quite a bit of torque steer. Maybe you could try a Focus ST, although it does give a boy racer image.

Or an S3! because... they're awesome!

1 Series coupes could be a good choice as their not that common at the moment. Although the styling does not appeal to quite a few people, I think they look great.

VXR Astra/Corsa's are fast and they are good for the money

There is a very good reason why ever other car is an A3 !! Now stop being silly and go and buy another one :)

Much rather the Focus ST, Golf GTI, Renaultsport Megane etc. etc. etc! VXR has too much of a boy racer image for my liking.

This is why I'm going to find it hard to decide what to replace the A3 with. The A3 is by far and away the best for me (closely followed by Golf) but I'm not sure if I'll want another unless the new model is out when I come to change.

And the Astra depreciates like a 1980s Skoda. Ok if you get one 2nd hand.

Astra's are more common that A3/S3 in my opinion - they are anyway over here in Northern Ireland

Only a handfull of S3's here which is good. The A3's are pretty common.

What about a GTI golf? ED30 Golf?

Scirocco would be nice, a mates mum has one and I love it!

No brainer.
MK5 Golf Gti.
Just need to decide whether its an ED30 , Pirelli or 200ps version.
Or the MK6 of course.

Scirroco is a nice alternative if you dont need as much rear passenger space.

cheers
Paul

TFSI, please go and sit in an Astra and then try not to burst into tears.
It is a horrible place to be in comparison to the A3. e.g. The rear window has the same visibility as trying to see through someones letter box. Everything else is cheap and plasticky.
Dont do it!

I would go for either a) Another A3 or b) BMW 1 Series or c) If your budget can stretch BMW 3 series.

Dont buy anything but German!:rockwoot:
This is coming from a Brit btw ;)

a3s are popular because there good , good to drive , awesome looks and interiors but its what mods you do to make it distinctive that count and set it apart from the rest next car for me if i can stomach an audi dealer again not sure i can will be a a1 sportback or a3 sportback if not then bmw

A3's arent common at all up here.

I guess thats the North/South divide, lol.

Very true, that becasue they are not ideal for transporting wippets, and coal, and brown ale .....n stuff, which is what us Northerners do....

hahahaha paul you crack me up , wippets and coal lol ..hahaha you forgot sheep to , up in them thills

I think that is specific to your end, might be down to a lack of room for 'suspended simians'. :moa:

Just a little further west and you will see lots of them. But maybe it is a perception thing?

In the same segment I would be looking at Golf, 'Rocco and 1'er. I do have a penchant for the Megane R, just because of the driving dynamics, but I am not sure about the rest.

Bang for buck it would be Cupra, VXR or ST.

id never own a cupra just couldnt do it ... its like buying lotto trainers

Before the A3 I had an Astra. Not VXR but still Astra. If you are used to A3, you'll find Astra a bit disappointing. It is a good car but not as good as the A3.
The quality of the materials used inside, the finishing touches, the dashboard aspect... not very cool. Regarding the performances, I know is very fast in the straight line but being a FWD is a minus. Torque steering is a pain. Maybe the new Astra will be better but the VXR version was not announced yet.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! -don't give away the secret!

Here in the US, nobody has really discovered the A3, and it barely trickles out of the dealerships. The fools think that a car can't be any good unless it's bloated, soft-sprung, and has a cast-iron Detroit motor in it. They also firmly believe -with a zealous conviction- that Hatchbacks are crap. -As a result, Audi dealerships have an extremely hard time shifting A3s. The prices are stupidly low, but still... NOBODY buys them! -And since gasoline is so laughably inexpensive over here, they only import the larger engines like the 2.0s and 3.2's.

If you walked into a dealership today with $25k (approx £15k), you could easily drive off the lot in a brand new A3.

See, the British and the Europeans are smarter than the average American. -MUCH smarter. Over here people still buy the Jetta in big numbers, and it's hard to shift the Golf/Rabbit. People think that the Golf/Rabbit is smaller, that it's therefore less safe, that it's therefore less of a 'status' car. -Fools! -They think that their 'urban assault vehicle' SUVs are intrinsically 'safer', faster, and/or better. -Dumbasses!

-But if everyone over HERE discovers that the A3 is such a pleasant car to live with, the demand and the price will climb...

...

...so just keep it to yourself, will you! ;)

Astra interior is whank!

If you get leather and sat nav it makes it up a bit but we have a 1.7cdti club 5 door and I hate it. The gf has a 1.9cdti sri sporthatch which is very nice but the interior, as said, would make you cry!

I have loads of pictures of A3's from the states which look stunning!! pity they are all 5 door though!

boydie post some interior pics up for the 5 doors where did you get em from mate

2nd hand VW Phaeton? They are pretty inexpensive when you consider that they are in essence a Bentley with a different body shell.
Megane F1?
More powerful A3 / S4?

I've driven the Astra VXR and thought it was great fun. The corsa VXR was even more fun though and very chuckable around corners.

What about something a bit more sporty - S2000 - they even have a big boot for a sports car...

Meanwhile here are some pic with my ex Astra (first two ones) and some interiors of a few others:

Other:

A 420 BHP VXR:

i bet the 420 bhp neerly snapped your wrist every time you floored it ...lol the dreaded torque steer

The VXR wasn't mine. I had a 1.6 - 105 HP. I have no idea how the car goes. I think the owner did something about that torque steer. He must have done something because otherwise I don't know how the car manages to put all that power on the road considering that is a FWD.9

i actually like vauxhall's styling a teeny bit , there external styling has come on alot since the older days but damn the internals are still ugly as hell ****** awefull i would buy one just cos of the interior even if it hit 60 in like 3 secs .....

i mean like who the hell are they employing for interior design jeez i could do better peed out of my face on 20 guiness ....and that's not a joke

Here's some of the things done to the VXR:
- low compression forged pistons Woessner 86.00mm
- forged biels
- new valves and valves springs
- Cosworth custom engine block
- custom intake
- Garret GT3071R kit (custom made fitted)
- Turbo Vacuum Sensor
- HKS SSQV
- full custom exhaust
- ECU & software
- Electronic Boost Controller-Apexi
- BOSCH spark plugs
- 650 cc injectors
- Adjustable Pressure Regulator
- BOSCH internal dual petrol pump
.
.
.
- ceramic clutch and light SMF
- LSD Quaife ATB Courtenay Sport
- front&rear grooved BREMBO rotors
- 30 mm springs + H & R + Electronic Adjustable Shocks
and may more...

I actually really like the Astra Sport Hatch, I even considered a 1.9 CDti before I got my A3. I don't think the interior is too bad, definitely a bit off an A3 but can still live with it.

Test drove a Leon FR TDi yesterday and they are quite entertaining for the price! So might be worth considering. Was a 57 plate for £11k, although I did get a back ache after getting out after and I'm not even that old!

I think the A1 will be silly money, especially as by the time it comes out, it will be based on a 2 year old SEAT Ibiza! Or drill down even further, a 3 year old Skoda Fabia platform!
