Folks,

what's the accuracy of the speedo on the S3 at 80mph on the clock - i.e. what's its true speed? I drove past a camera van today at bang on 80 - that might have been too quick if what it says on the speedo is completely true!

thanks
Jools

it will be pretty accurate as with all modern cars

unless you have done any mods with like wheel sizes etc

them vans will give you a tickets over 3-4 mph of the limit

just bad luck matey

I'd be shocked if 80mph on the clock was more than a genuine 75mph.

Was it definatly a speed camera van and not an ANPR van? Ive notice a sudden increase in the number of ANPR vans in my local area. You might be lucky if they were just checkin incurance/tax etc.

Your speedo is allowed to be 0% under and up to 10% over, so expect it to be about 75-78 MPH real speed. You might get a ticket for that, especially off a camera van, but then, you might not. Keep an eye on your post for the next couple of weeks (NIP has to be issued within 14 days, so after that you're clear).

Unless you lease the car, hire it, have it as a company car, etc... in which case they have a "reasonable period of time to trace the driver" which could be anything up to about 6 months.

FWIW, mine runs +3mph @ 80 according to GPS.

Thanks for the replies guys.

AuldReekie - is yours a facelift S3? My TomTom is about 1mph less than what my speedo says, but then again this is an old TomTom Mobile from 2005!

Jools, no mine is pre-facelift (MY07). Sounds like your speedo is pretty accurate then, so with a fair wind I don't think you should be hammered too much if it was a speed camera. A colleague got sent on one of those 'Driver Awareness' courses under similar circumstances instead of points (82/70 on A303), but that might just be a force initiative.

l got caught a few months back, by a van. l was doing 82. l didnt get any points though as the love of my life took them.

The speeedometers in most VAG group cars read about 5mph high up to about 60. Beyond this they get further out the faster you go. I recently tested a VRS Octavia that was reading 18mph high at 130mph

l remember a conversation that took place at a local mod shop. seemingly this guy with a 306 had been caught doing 130. He contested it and wanted the car on the rolling road as he said he was only doing 80, needless to say his speedowas correct and he was trying it on.

I went past one today at 78Mph Hopefully the speedo is reading high by a few MPH, and they allow me the rest = no ticket!

I went past one at 78mph and never heard a thing. I think 80's pushing it though :(

I'm not sure if it was an urban legend but I understand that Traffic would give you a 10% grace in the Nationals, no such discretion with flash boxes I would imagine. :(

I heard it was 10% + 2

That would make sense nowadays, when 85 is the new 80. I set mine at 83 (80 really) on M'Way and crack on; so far I have never been tugged and long may it continue (touch wood).

all motorists are allowed 10% over the speed limit. Depending what road you were on hopefully the motorway jusdging at 80mph you are still over by 3 mph. If you have not heard anything over a fortnight they cant do you.

There was a copper on traffic cops controlling a radar gun and he said the old 5mph+10%. He was ignoring everyone under 50 in a 40.

My speedo showed 179mph when my Garmin satnav said 168 and my Garmin GPS said 165. That should be a proportionate inaccuracy throughout the range so at 80 it would be about 74mph.

Any reasons why the two Nav devices would be different; actually, could it be down to their processor speeds? :readit:

3mph at 160+ is pretty good I reckon. They're not really designed for that sort of speed, well the handheld GPS certainly lol

I wasn't saying it was bad there was a difference, I was on about why they gave different readings. But you pretty much answered that in the second bit. :icon_thumright:

I didn't say you said it was bad, I just thought it was pretty good! lol

By the way do you like my new gif:

I've asked for it to be added to the other emoticons :icon_thumright:

Sweet image, about time for SB. :s3addict:

ACPO guidelines say don't bother for less than 10%+2 mph over. But that's just a guideline for traffic cops, and they can use discretion above that if they want.

The semi-trained monkeys who man the cams have no such discretion, they have to log everyone who is over the limit.

Indicated 120 km/h, GPS 112-113 km/h
Indicated 100 km/h, GPS 95 km/h

You were just in the limit by the sounds of it. I got done in wiltshire last month for 81mph in a 70 limit. The letter then went on to say about speed awareness courses instead of points(only some area forces offer this). The limits to qualify for a course were the speed limit, +10%, +2 to 6mph. Then they finished the letter that it wasnt available for offences in 60 and 70 mph limits.
