Whats up guys.

I guess I'll introduce myself. I'm Cort.

I've been a dubber since I was old enough to toddle. I grew up in all over the world and in Germany for 8 years, I now live in Texas, and own an Audi S3. I've owned three baywindows (aircooled VW Busses), an 89 Golf GL, 2002 25th Anniversary GTi, an 87 GTi which I VR'ed from a 92 SLC Corrado. So yeah, you could say I'm kinda a dubber.

Anyway, I found this site via edition38, and was told to check it out.

Here's what it looked like when I first got it. Thats me next to it.

2nd Car show I took it to at H2ointernational '06 Thats over 1200 miles from Texas to Ocean City, Maryland.

Didn't really change anything on the car for over a year because at the time I had A. Gotten married B. Gotten divorced C. Built the mkII VR D. Sold the MkII

Then H2ointernational '07 came around... And yeah, I got in a lil bit in of trouble. Its a really long story, but long story.short ..I wrecked the S3 up there. I'm sure alot of you know about this already, and I'd rather not go into details about it. We all make mistakes, and it's the way we learn from them that judges us. It was almost two years ago, and I'd like to let sleeping dogs lie.

Sooo....
Well, let me explain a little bit about the front bumper/front end. I was in a pretty bad wreck about two years ago, and the whole front end basically got smashed up pretty good. I broke a headlight, front bumper was ripped off all together, busted my radiator, passenger side intercooler, some front fender dents, and a motor mount.

Since my car isn't sold in America, I had to call on Tmtuning to do a big order for me. Now, as some of you may know, TMtuning is kinda like a middle-man organzation for us americans. They basically just order from the manufacturers there, and get their stuff shipped stateside. That being said, I ended up ordering my front bumper from an outfit called "rs4-trade" who specifically makes RS4 replicas for the 8L A3 and S3's. They are kinda hard to get a hold of, and keep in contact with and I had to wait over 3 weeks before I even got word that they were getting started on it.

Also, the one company that Tmtuning doesn't really deal with is FK automotive. Well it figures that the only set of headlights I liked were from FK. I was going for an all black headlight housing, and considering the fact that I had the 2000-two piece style headlights, I wanted the smoother one piece "facelift" look. OEM projectors are over 1300 euro new, and I just didn't have that kind of cash at that moment, so I waited for 4 months on back order for my headlights from FK. So, the reason I waited for so long was because I specifically ordered "Ohne Leuchtringe" Black headlights. Basically that means that its without Angel eyes, I had FK angel eyes on my old MkIV and didn't think it was that great after owning it. Long story short, Tmtuning received my headlights, and didn't open the box... I got black headlights with angel eyes.... Not exactly happy about that, but whatever. Then I popped in a 6k HID kit for the projectors. Then ordered "mercury" style bulbs for the turn signals that are silver when off, and yellow when illuminated. Then I got the 6k match LED for the city lights.... Thats about all the info on the headlights.

141479-735-551.jpg

The grill was a mattig 3 bar grill that didn't fit my bumper because the RS-4 style grill opening is NOT the same as an OEM S3. Therefore we had to cut and mold the bumper around the grill to get it to fit. I also have OEM RS4 fogs and lower grills to match the bumper.

132533-735-551.jpg

Now, for the hood. First and foremost, let me start by saying. From the moment I saw my first boser hood when I lived in germany, waiting for the train and heard a VR6 mkIII come around the corner and lock its angry eyes at me... I was in love. I've had a boser style hood on my old mkIV, and I knew as soon as I was going to have to do body work to the hood a boser was in the making. The creator of my hood, is one of the best in the business, he's a personal friend of mine, and has built a few magazine article VW's. He is the one who got my car when it was wrecked, and we both knew that this was going to be a long slow build. I discussed at great length how I wanted my hoodline to look, and he followed through perfectly. We made the orignal base out of tape, then cardboard, then cut a piece of metal to match the tape and cardboard, pounded the metal till it had the shape we wanted, and then tack welded it to the hood, grinded down the welds, smoothed, and painted.

132532-735-551.jpg

Now, for the rear, I shaved all the badges on the back, and bought a glass "plug" to replace the rear wiper arm to give the car a "smooth and clean" look. Since the car was in order for a full respray I decided to change the rear OEM paint scheme. I painted the oem gray to match in brilliant black. I also had had the previous crappy tint job I did myself removed, and redone.

From this...

132530-735-551.jpg

141480-735-551.jpg

150922-735-551.jpg

To this:

151132-735-551.jpg

The sides got pretty knicked up too, replaced the side markers with new tinted side markers too, I broke a side molding and trim piece, and had some one throw a cinder block at me. True story... Pics for proof, look just below the window.

113984-735-551.jpg

113983-735-551.jpg

132535-735-551.jpg

Just as I did with the back, I painted the side grey sideskirts to match with brilliant black.

132529-735-551.jpg

Since I had also destroyed one of my Avus wheels in the process of the wreck, I had decided to build a set of wheels. My good friend in Texas had a set of widened steelies on his MkII, and I absolutely loved them. Now, I knew the S3 had the same brake setup as the 25th Anniversary, which I had before, and I knew that only New Beetle Steel Wheels would clear the calipers since they are 16", so I bought a set of Beetle steelies from a friend of mine in Ohio, and had him take off the tires, and ship them to an outfit in New Jersey that widens wheels. They are 6.5" stock, so I had the fronts widened to 8" and the rears to 9". From that point, I had them then shipped to my body shop, where they paint matched the steelies with Brilliant Black.

137413-735-551.jpg

137414-735-551.jpg

Then I had to decide on tires (thats right, with an I  ) anyway, On my 25th aniversary, I had stretch and poke, and that was back in '05... The trend hadn't really caught on yet, and I caught a lot of heat for being that wide. Didn't really bother me too much now, considering everyone and there brother is doing it now.

stretch.jpg

203.jpg

Annnnyway, I kinda like being new and exciting and trying new things. Therefore I'm going for a look that NO one is doing in the VW/Audi crowd. I'm going to go big and BEEFY tires. The exact opposite of poke and stretch, tuck and THICK. I wanted to have my tires come from germany, so I ordered Dunlop Sport Maxx's which is the same "official" tire of the DTM circuit racing, so I figured that was the way to go. On my 16x8's I ran a 205/55 and on my 16x9's I'm running a 225/55. I really like the way it sits, and its not for everyone, for sure. But man, this thing handles, and they are actually not loud at ALL!

Then it was time to ship her home, over a year and a half later.

152418-735-551.jpg

Now, bear in mind. The car was STILL undriveable, the car refused to engage any gear, and the body shop it was at did not want to work on it. Not only that, but when it ran, it rattled like a diesel at idle. Therefore when I got it back home, my buddy owns a shop, and we tore into the clutch... It had literally seized to the flywheel. Eeesh. So, new clutch, flywheel, and throw out bearing later, the car RUNS! Woot woot! Then we found out the plastic guides on the cam tensioner had broken, so we had to replace that. Well after getting the new cam tensioner in, we look at the timing belt, and we can move it with our hand... NOT good. So new timing belt, new waterpump (with a metal impeller). Then my coilovers were installed, and alligned. I ended up going with VMAXX simply because they were new in the box from a local dubber for 500. The rear perches are out, and now it tucks both the fronts and rears...So, with one day left to spare before my deadline of completeing the car for a car show in Vegas, we get it out of his shop. Once at home, I had to rewire and solder the brake sensor wire which had literally sheered in half. So now my brake light is now off! Woot woot!

So, my fearless co-pilot and I travel for almost 18 straight hours into the deserts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas to make our way to the car show. We stop in the city of Tucson, Arizona, where my grandmother lives. We pay her a visit, sleep, and we make our way out to the car. We go to get some breakfast, and the car starts screaming with the clutch in.... Greaaaat, the throw out bearing is taking a poop. I think to myself, as I try to leave the parking lot, the car just starts bucking in gear no movement. Greaaaaaaat.

159771-735-551.jpg

I call for a tow to the audi dealership and tell them my issue. They promise me I will be out by friday afternoon. (car show is saturday afternoon 400 miles away). We agree and I spend an extra night with my grandmother. Next day around noon I get a call from Audi.

"Sir, we think this is a bent shifter fork. That means we need to split the case, and you aren't going anywhere until NEXT thursday at the earliest, and its going to cost well over $3,000 in parts and labor."

You can imagine my calm and collected answer...

So, I call all my friends and discuss the situation, and we all collectively agree the Audi dealership is full of garbage. I tell them to put my car back together with the new throw out bearing.... I get there at 4pm, and now it won't go into ANY gear. Fantastic. So being the dubber that I am, I snapped a few pics... which are my only pics with the coils on. Here's how it looks now. I have a europlate flipped backwards on it, because I had to attach velcro to the backside so I could mount a Texas plate that would be easily removable for shows. Cops are ******* (god I've always wanted to say that to a british person) when it comes to rocking no plates up front in texas.

160053-735-551.jpg

160054-735-551.jpg

So, now I'm stranded in Arizona, about 800 miles from home with my buddy. By the good graces of little baby jesus, I have a friend of mine who is a dubber in Los Angeles, California. Get this.... She drives from Los Angeles to TUCSON. Picks our stranded asses up, and takes us to the show in her 05 New Beetle Convertible (which is on coils, chipped and SL 500 Alphards btw). We missed the show entirely, by 3 hours. But made the awards banquet, and got to go to several after parties...stayed an extra day in Vegas and flew home.

Since then, I have had the S3 towed to a different independent euro shop in Tucson. They say the car is making nasty noises from the bell housing and inside the transmission. So I'm having them take out the transmission from the car, and going to ship it to APtuning on the east coast were they specialize in 02M transmission rebuilds. So, hopefully I'll be getting the car back...

Ummm...

Thats about it I think.

Tell me what you think about the car, and please do me a favor... If you are on the vwvortex or audizine please don't post pics of my car on it. Thanks

If you want a lot of high rez shots, here they are... (pre coils though)

nice car dude! i think your in my neck of the woods. I'll have to check it out in person. can i drive it?

Looks pretty cool. Not my cut of char but the graft shows. Nice one.

OI Jase!!!!

Cort good to see you on here mate.

Personally, I really like what you have done to the car, its different and cool in a Euro way (something S3 Kev has done)

Im a dubber at heart and can really apreciate the look of the car, as I already said it has a stealth look about it and looks cool, keep the updates coming.

Interesting read. Fair play for trying something different. Your car instantly made me think of the Mad Max car with those wheel...
aa_1973_ford_falcon_mad_max.jpg

Not a fan of the wheels, as they remind me of the time I had the spare wheel on, but the rest of the body work looks good. LOVE the RS4 bumper, the second one I seen, and it looks sweet.

Would like to see what the bonnet would look like with that curvature, but with the original front light set-up?

I want to know why the hell some one threw a cinder block at you????

looks good, keep up the good work and keep us updated :icon_thumright:

Welcome to the site Cort, nice effort with the car, it's certainly individual.

Hope you get your gearbox sorted soon, I had a diff pin let go on my S3 and it blew a hole to the side of the casing mincing all the gears in the process.

American modding scene :anbet:

Thanks for the interesting write up, always good to hear real enthusiasts playing about with their cars. Keep us posted on the latest developments.

Nice write up. Hope you get it all sorted. Read about your "incident" a while back and saw the video...Pretty crazy, but hey...haven't we all ****** up at some point in our lives!

Car looks really cool. Stealthy, beefy and just plain out "ol' school-Mad-Max- Night-Rider-Demolition-Derby-ish"...

Well done!

Its a nice example. Certainly something different which obviously some people dont appreciate. IMO would've looked better in a different colour but thats swings and roundabouts.

Welcome Cort.

Well, that's some introduction fella :applaus:

Liking the ride on the whole and a damn lot of man hours to get it looking like that. Dunno about the steelies though but then I'm an alloy/chrome lover :sex:

like the wheels, what size are they.

oooooh i really really like those wheels!! lights look poo as it makes it look like a modded A3....those wheels are ace though!!!

nice car dude! i think your in my neck of the woods. I'll have to check it out in person. can i drive it?

Ummm... When it's running, I'll give you a ride IN it. But no one drives this car but me. Sorry.

Whats happening next?

Well, I need to figure out something for my hub centers, since I can't seem to find a cap from VW or Audi that fits. I had a similar issue with my BBS RC's on my 25 anniversary, but I ended up going to a honda dealership and finding caps that fit, and then had a silver sticker made to fit over the top with a VW logo... What else? I want new seats, replace some speakers, 3" Downpipe, and delete my resonator.... list goes on and on.

looks like mad max. I like the hood, but with the orginal light set up...

Thanks! I kinda like to think I have less wheel gap than he did though! :lmfao: Like I said, in my wreck I broke a headlight and the other one was already faded... I wanted the OEM's but they were close to 1300 euro... Just didn't have that kinda cash

Thanks for all the good compliments! I'm a sucker for them, and I've kept this build under wraps for close to a year and a half.... Only my very close friends here in Texas knew about it, and I've been keeping my pics off all american websites. You guys are the second site I've posted a thread on about it, and the first was only two days ago.... I know the wheels are going to be "everyone's cup of tea" but for the record, I'm a texas boy and I like my tea ICE cold with tons of sugar. So, I'm sure its different than a majority of you guys drink, but I'll be damned if it doesn't cool me down in the middle of the summer ;-). I've built several cars before, and I am just kinda tired of how everyone copies everyone and follows each other.

After all, Audi "leads, never follows".

I'm at work now at 6am cleaning commerical air-conditioning systems, so I won't be able to post back for a few more hours... Lemme know if I can answer any more questions.

Keep it coming! :beerchug: :greyrs4: <---they need to make one of these in black :crying:

Wow, what a writeup! Car looks different, wheels aren't exactly my taste - but I think it's interesting. I can't help but think that all that work would've cost you an absolute fortune - wouldn't it have been easier to salvage and sell what was left and bring over another S3?
Just a thought.

Looking good though dude - and all the best with getting her going.

Welcome to the site cort, hope you have learnt from what happened in 07, everyone deserves a second chance mate. Any way nice work on the car mate, personally not sure about the steelies but each to there own, hope you get the gearbox issues sorted and keep the updates coming.

I love the look of your car cort, have you got any engine mods lined up for it??

Just a thought.

It has cost me quite a bit of money to fix everything. I'm almost exactly in debt what I paid for the car in repairs. However, "importing" a vehicle is NOT easy. Especially an S3.

I get the feeling the steelies aren't liked. But thats ok by me, I really like them. I do plan on getting another set of wheels later...

I like the idea of rs's 301's....My buddy made this p-shop for me about a year ago...

I am Revo chipped, and have a Forge DV on it. I want an Intake, 3" Downpipe, but thats really about all I need. I'm done driving fast, its gotten me in way too much trouble in the past.

Whenever I start to think my car is slow, I just start driving my 40 HP 1975 VW Transporter Type II. Makes my car feel like a damn rocket ship.

.
i had the same thing with my wheels mate but i prefer being different its hard to gauge how cool a car looks in pics but i can imagen your car looks wicked in the flesh, it kind of looks drag racer

oh yeah whats the deal with the headlights did you just use a hid kit and standard headlight levelers im thinking of doing a facelift conversion

I love your R50's Kev they look so cool.... i like the steelie's too but not sure on the colour... great write up
i no some people love them but there not to everyones taste but thats what i like about them :icon_thumright:

As a previous MkII owner, I can tell ya, I like em too. Ronal turbos are a GREAT wheel for the mkII. Its a nice flash from the past.

ahhhh yeahh cort......saw your video ages ago, sorry if you got in sh*t but that was funny as hell dodging the cop car :p on the dirt track....LEGEND...lmfao:rock:

and this is for sure the way to go,although the steelies are different in a good way..

Hi, Nice S3, I like the wheels i have decided.
