i have a phantom black s3 with black optics...

soooo... im looking for peoples opinions.. do you think my car looks too blande? does it look like just a black edition...?

second question.. is it possible to order just the chrome grille surround and not the whole standard grille.. what im thinking is to keep the black optics but change the surround part is chrome? what do you think?

alternatively i could get a body shop to spray it either aluminium? (to match wing mirrors) or graphite? to match front and rear bumpers??

please help as im actually quite frustrated about this.. :sadlike:

Personally I would go for the complete chrome Grill and sell you black one as a complete one. Just looked at ETKA and it looks like you can buy just the chrome surround though. I have copied the page below with part numbers but you should check it at dealers. I have just bought the complete grill for £144 so weigh that up with the price of just the surround and the possibility of whta you may get back if you sell yours. The black optics would sell quite easily I'd of thought.

check out this thread (if you havn't already done so):-

At the end of the day its personal choice, and for everyone who likes it there will be someone else with a different opinion.

I do think black S3s with the black optics look great, but yeah it looks VERY similar to the black edition. The facelift S3 looks very similar to the facelift S-Line anyway.

I prefer the crome grille myself and the crome vertical bars make it stand out a bit.

Having had both Chrome and optics grills on phantom black i much prefer the look of the optics grill. It looks much more aggressive and definitely gets more comments Don't change it

if you have a look at the rs4 its got the black grill with aluminium surround.. this is the look i was thinking of by changing just "the ring" ?? i know it looks good now but i feel its not "S"3 enough... looks abit ordinary

just called audi watford where i got the car... for the chrome grille surround its £58.56 inc vat! ill call my lady friend at chingford audi later and see if i can get some discount...

im going to have a think about it and ask some mates what they think?? i would like as many people as possible to give their opinions pleasee.... even if you say it looks poo either way hahaha!

;)i need someone to do me a photoshop... ive done it on paint... but loooks sh**..

whos gona help me?

They're the sammeeeeee :S (more or less)

Audi should have done something better with the S3...

Yep, to the average person they look the same but there are some subtle differences, i've examined them closely :)

1) The lower vents on the S3 follow the angle of the wheel arch, The S-line vents flare outwards.
2) The S3 vents have a fake mesh behind them.
3) The S3 has a very slightly deeper lower centre spoiler.
4) The S3 front bumper flares out very slightly wheras the S-line curves inwards

But then when you look at the new S4, the front features are the same as the A3 S-line :)

I don't think Audi have put much effort into making the facelift S3 design unique. Stick the S3 grille on an S-line and it's hard to tell them apart.

i agree on the facelift there isn't that much difference, it is more obvious on pre-facelift cars. If you were to lower it and change the wheels for some nice 19s there would be no mistaking it for a Black edition ;)

How are those pics of a pre-facelift S3 in blue are supposed to help mate?

How about this:

Do you ever get the feeling that people are missing the point?

This is a tough one mate... TBH I rather like the way your car looks with the optics grill, but I see your point regarding the the similarity to the black edition... It's long been debated that they should have flared the rear arches ala the MK1 S3, but that's another thread :)

I just seen a facelift S3 in phantom black with the chrome grill, and it does say S3! If that's what your after... Your idea of just getting the chrome surround sounds like the way forward. If you can be bothered to sand this down or get it sanded down to suit your mirrors, like the RS4 grill surround (as well as your rings) then this will look great IMO.

I cant see what the difference is on the blue one, just looks standard!

As for the OP, the chrome grille will help make it look more like an S3 because it will stand out a bit more. Never seen the point in chrome or black to be honest, both of them dont match the mirrors anwyay!

IMHO, the S3 should have a satin mesh grille like the RS6. At least it would be individual to the S3 and match the mirrors at the same time.

If you want to change to chrome then there are normally plenty of S3 owners on here wanting to change to the black optics so offer i out as a swap! Sorted!

I was trying to show a S3 optic grill fitted with chrome surround okay on mine I changed the grill sticks for chrome as well
Thought the op wanted to put a chrome grill on a optic pack
As for looking like a std grill on the sprint if you look the rest of the grill is black and not grey which I think would look good on a black car

Oh yeah i can see now you have pointed it out! Does look better in black with chrome.

Where can I buy a complete black optics grill from?

Hmmmm probably pricey then, anyone have any part numbers?

Don't suppose anyone has a part number for the black optic grill?

thanks for all the responses guys..

the look i was thinkin was more RS4 grille..

but after extreme amounts of though im going to leave it for now.. at the end of the day i can always change it..

if i do decide to do it, ill buy a black grille surround and have it sprayed aluminum to match the mirrors.. as i am a major chrome dodger

Well I like both, and have seen both flavours side by side, hard choice.

If you fancy a change why not invest in the chrome set up and keep the optics so you can alternate between them when the mood takes you?

Confuse the neighbours at the same time (the observent ones)

cheers
Paul

as mentioned lol

Very quick (not the best) photoshop for you... I gather this is what you wanted?... I love the black grill... I would have gone for it over the chrome on mine however the £100 extra was a little extreme.
