Spare key for my 1998 SE?

Hi all

I've found a couple of threads discussing how to get a spare key cut and programmed etc. but need some clarification please.

I've got a 1998 SE, which does have remote locking with a two-button remote (apparently only this model/year had this?)

Could anyone give me a definitive & proven guide on how to get a spare key made? I don't need a remote, i'm quite happy using the key to unlock as it's only a spare. I am assuming I can buy a blank normal key with transponder on eBay, and then get it cut accordingly and programmed. I don't have vagcom, but i'm sure I know a man who does.

Also, on a side note, when I unlock the car I hear a prolonged noise from the rear of the car. It sounds like the fuel pump priming, but I wouldn't expect it to do this upon unlock, more ignition-II position. Is this something to do with one of the central locking valves? Is it something I should repair? I am guessing it may be to do with the fuel filler cap locking mech.

I had a key cut by emailing this guy a picture of one of my keys. only cost £8, not sure if he is still trading on ebay but if you want I can dig out his email address for you

I ended up buying a remote key from ebay as my car didnt have one, got the blade cut for free at my local key cutting place when i bought another key. The remote locking part i manage to do using some instructions i found on this forum but the transponder part i ended up getting hold ofn VAG Tacho to get my immobilser pin code so that i could use VAG Com to code the key to the car. Obviously a dealer could do this for you also

How long does the pump run for? If it runs on for more than a second or two it implies a vacuum leak, which if left unchecked will kill the pump.

The replacement key needs coded to the immobiliser, and you can only do that with the cars security code and vagcom. If you dont have the security code, you will need something like a VagTacho cable and software to extract the code from the immobiliser.

It's approx 3-5 seconds. Is it a serviceable part?

Well its not broken just yet, assuming all the doors still unlock...

You need to fix the vacuum leak pronto, or the graphite impeller in the pump will break, and you'll need to either replace the pump, or bodge it back to life with bits from another one.

audi state longer run time than six seconds suggests a leak in the system

if you think yours runs to long but cant find any leaks there is some adjustment
theres a panel in the pump case that comes out (little rectangle plate near twin outlets)
open this and you have access to a little diaphragm unit that makes a contact in either direction this controls run time, youll see two prongs that you can bend inwards this will shorten run time, but dont bend to much!
