Hey peeps, just wondering what everyones average mpg is for their 1.8T. Ive just self serviced the car over the weekend and Im gettin 30-35mpg at the moment, and prior to that it was awful at only 24-28mpg funnily tho it only started this poor performance this last month. So all in all Im quite happy Ive given the engine a new lease of life and its gonna save me pennies.

Also anyone running Castrol Edge as their oil of choice? Ive just put a £50 tub in and Im hoping I will benefit from it. Just wondering what the average oil usage is?
 
I dont know the exact as i have never worked it out but i get 390 miles to a tank.
 
I generally only get around 26 mpg, although my average speed (over 1500 total miles) is currently reading 46mph... :blush:

What did you change at the service other than oil? (I always use synta gold)

I changed air filter to the standard audi filter (was a coopers, a cheap and wonderful from a non audi garage). I got pollen filter also which makes a hell of a difference to the cold air coming into the cabin :)

I also got new NGK PFR6Q 6458 Spark plugs as recommended on a few Audi forums. Upon taking the older ones out I realised this was a surely good time to replace them, build up was quite bad on them.

Like I said earlier I put in Castrol Edge which is the most recommended oil for VAG engines by Castrol and VAG. Its dear stuff but only 15 quid dearer than Castrol Magnatec which the engine was running beforehand. Oh and a Audi oil filter with all the german instructions on the side and a sump plug chucked in for free, and before i forget, a 10% discount also! as the guy I got the parts from had a good look at my car and said he wouldnt mind one, considering he has a old clapt out Volvo, as he put it. Altho Im still unsure why he doesnt have an Audi considering he works at a VAG stealers.

If I put foot down Im getting 27mpg, which isnt too bad considering it was only doing 21mpg before service. All in all Im happy with her again.
 
im getting aroudn 20mpg! jsut worked it out as the DIS is not the most accurate! thats local driving no motorway! i dont floor it that much either!

surely somethings got to be wrong here, looking through history of car, its never had any of the sensors replaced i believe the Temp sensor needs replacing and the MAF sensor? maybe thats what causing the bad mileage. car was only serviced 2 months ago.

going to give the NGK sparks a try as they come highly recomended!

@Markey, how did u manage 390 on a full tank mate? didnt know it was possible? local driving or motorway?
 
Im not exactly sure wot my mpg is, but off a full tank i get about 350miles...

On average i get about 70 miles to £10 at about 93.9..im pretty happy with that...
 
Yeah i do combined and i drive normal stick to local speed limits etc and thats what i normally get if i hammer it mental like then i can get less.

Interesting. I only serviced mine recently, just the same as you but with Synta Gold and Bosch plugs.

I may have a dabble with the NGKs to see if it affects things.
 
I have also just bought the NGKs so i hope to get a little better MPG on top :)
 
Wondering if yo guys could help me here?

I have always been geeting around 26mpg in my 1.8T (98) the way I look at it is how many miles to the tenner - £10=50 miles around town driving. This is a bit mad to be fair as I never put the boot and try to be as economical as possible driving and still no difference.

I have had a lot of work done to the car recently too and service carried out and still the same. Just had a new air-flow meter installed and the mechanic informed me that this could help with mpg. Initially it seemed to as the first £10 I put in I got about 80 mile out of it but I'm positive I have a faulty float in the tank as the reading can sometimes be strange.

Is there anything else that can be done to help with consumption, as I am thinking of getting rid of the car over this as I can't afford the running costs.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's the same technique for monitoring economy I use. Being a tightwad I always put in £15 at a time (no idea why, really) and that is enough for two days worth of work and back, and a visit to the other halfs. That's 110 miles approx out of £15. Usually Sainsburys 95ron. That's about 70 miles per tenner.

Not as good as I used to be getting, but my driving has changed and the engine is probably only properly warm by the time I get to my destination.
 
Mr T, B5 fuel gauge senders are well reknown for their faults, causing erratic readings.

I'd start by replacing it with a new one - they're quite cheap too, by Audi standards.
 
TBH the car is still producing around 28-30 mpg on that tenner as thats barely 9 litres at this moment. I can get mine into single figures if i want some fun, or get it up to nearly 40 mpg on a proper run . My average is 350 on a tank of super, it;s the price i pay for driving a nice car
 
Judging how far you've gone on a tenner is very vague and random, as the fuel warning light comes on at different times, and the senders also start to be a bit funny when reading near empty for some reason.

If your going to quote figures, you need to quote them on a full tank to full tank basis and calculate fuel used against the mileage between fills.

The most we've had from a tank is about 420miles, and that was on a motorway run to GTI Spring Festival. Worked out to around 36mpg iirc. We average around 32-33ish normally, although this was only after the GTI roadtrip. Before then it would only do around 30mpg, and the main difference being that i blew the tires up to 36psi before heading down to GTI and didnt deflate them afterwards!

Tyres affect your fuel consumption quite a bit. A Sticky tyre like an EagleF1 has a higher drag on the tarmac when compared with a rock hard ditchfinder, and this causes more fuel consumption. Our engine is also old and probably not as efficient as it once was, having done 185k, so its probably losing some efficiency there too!
 
Yep, "quick and dirty" fuel economy figures aren't to be trusted any more than the OBC is. But I do know I'm getting less economy with the 235s than the 205s. Stands to reason. Top-end has been affected too, struggles to accelerate above 125ish

(on a private runway)
 
A usual working week I only average about 20 - 25 MPG but I do a 2 -3 mile (town driving) drive to work and back so very rarely ever get to 100% efficient running temp.

On a mixed run I usually get 30 - 35 which is about what I'd expect really.
 
Usually they've got names such as "M6 Toll" too which is rather strange.

End of the day even if you wandered up to a traffic cop and said "I was speeding 10 minutes ago" there's very little if anything they can do.

Unless you mount a video camera in the car and go off down the motorway at 130mph filming yourself, then post the video online, then your unlikely to attract any police attention by saying you drove at 100mph on a public forum, it could after all be nothing more than you bragging to your mates with made up facts.
 
I average between 25 and 27 normally.

Recently did a run down to Leeds and back and got between 38 and 39mpg on that trip. Was about 470 miles to the tank.

Strange how this post has cropped back up, the problem decided to fix itself somehow which I found strange. And the trip computer started to give correct readings after I attempted to jump start my brothers BMW 318 which I also found strange lol.
Anyway doing 29mpg avg and 37mpg on a good straight run on motorway.

Seriously though i get about 30mpg typically. If i spank it, which I have been doing of late, it drops down to an average of about 15-18mpg. I'm still quite happy though as my weekend toy has seen a 40l tank of Super off in 120miles:rockwoot:
 
On my recent MRC Banbury trip from Inverness did just under 1300miles and used 3 tanks. Although saying that did have the OBC reading 0 miles for about 15 miles. Ended up coming off M6 (seen that next services were 28miles) at Wigan driving as economically as poss with tight you know what till I found a Shell :faint:.
Usual for my tqs is around 25 me thinks with a little urban and A road driving....
