Im going out to buy one of these this weekend and finally trade the old S3 in

yeah right!!!!!!!!

My neighbour brought home an 05 plate Megane sport yesterday (hes a mechanic and hes trying to solve an long standing issue)...... how could the french get it so wrong, the front IMO looks mint, the engine is good, the brakes are awesome...it even handles well when its not spinning the wheels..... just the back and the interior are total and utter crap!! its like they designed it then decided to have a competition at the local nursery for the interior and back bit....god damn aweful, dash looks like a big piece of plastic with the remnants of a nasty plastic CD player that looks like it came out of an 'action mans' jeep (yes the classic plastic toy)

I do like megan R2.6 but at the end of the day is a car with a *** yeah it yellow and nice wheels but is still a megan. if only thay could the back of it it would be a lot more populer.

Yea same as Ford

F = Fix
O = Or
R = Repair
D = Daliy

Its french so it folds up when you crash at 10MPH...

lol, can you think of ANY decent french cars?????

The Megan has a 5 star encap rating as other drivers are so appalled at how they look they feel the need to crash into them and right them off!

its french it will last 3 years if your lucky then it will cost you ££££ to keep it running. They are not as good as the old rover group imo and should have gone bust but for the french goverment.

5 stars maybe but that doesnt change the **** end or that god aweful interior..... absolutley terrible design

French crap...

I'd like a go in the new R26 for sure but i'd never spend my hard earned on one, for that money give me a golf GTI any day...

As I said, I really like them. I had one when they first came out...3 door, black with big wheels. Looked like nothing else onthe road. In fact mine was the first one out of the dealership.

I only had it for 2 years so it went back after that (company car). I never had any problems with it though, nice drive too. Cars all look the same these days, I wanted something a bit left field when I got it.

French = sh*te, the misses has aclio an clip the wall on the drive ova day, ripped the bumper off from the left hand side all the way to the drivers head light.
Would hate to think if she had an actual crash, the car would cruple.

I like the R26's they look and handle brilliantly. I guess with a remap they'd be excellent progress makers. But still only front wheel drive

Quite like the look of the new Focus RS i must admit!!

but ford, renault you will never replicate the quality you have now.... this i can guarantee, its a totally different league which is the point im trying to make.....

Hmmm, there appear to have been a few 'quality issues' discussed on these pages regarding A/S3's though!.

hey they arent without their issues but please do not comapre the quality of a ford focus or a renault sport to the Audi...there simply is no comparison at all, full stop

this isnt me being snobby, if you have sat in either and viewed the dashboard you will totally understand, then drive it and listen to the cracks and creaks

I couldn't agree more, I'll never go back to a ford,vauxhall,Renault etc...when I'm done with the S3 it'll be another Audi or even a Beemer...

I'm not suggesting the Audi or bmw would be as much fun to drive but as an over all package, I personally don't think they can be beat...

cheers leggy exactly my point, the renault handled brilliantly, engine was spot on and i even liked the front!! but as a package the positives were dwarfed by its weaknesses

I've had and driven both :yes:

Renault was brand new when I got it, fantastic car. Good price of you pay for one (mine was company), good spec for the money, doesnt cost 20K like the same specced Audi/VW etc. Drives well, I liked the looks. I liked the interior of it too, push button start and LOADS of storage and a massive boot. Good rear leg/head room etc and I never had any problems with it.....didnt miss a beat.

Audi: its 9 years old and still going....cant be sure if the Megane would have still been going. Its tiny in the back (makes no odds to me though), boot isnt as big, brand new it would have cost a whole lot more to buy, looks a but 'Plain Jane' compared to the Megane.

Brand new if I was buying I'd go Renault because I dont have deep enough pockets to buy a brand new S3 (if I was going for a fast hatch).

I have driven most of the Reanultsport range ( 172, 182 197 clios and 225 and r26 megane ). Ye the interiors are rubbish and it will probably live in Renualts garage, not yours

I think if you choose the right one it may be even more fun!

Fair point :)

For all their faults though I reckon the Clio 197 and megane R26 would be a hoot round a track...don't know how long they'd last but would be fun while they did...lol

All the Reanultsport cars are great driving machines. 182 clios will keep up with most hot hatches with a decent driver. A Megane R26, you will be lucky to keep up with, that cars has so much grip you never think it only FWD. There is a hardcore Megane out R26.R for your die hard car fans which is from what I have read (evo and perfomance car reader) is one of the best hot hatches ever.

well you of all people should understand the difference Tom, i picked my 02 S3 over a focus St on a 54plate, didnt even drive the Renault through the shockingly ***** dash and rear end (altho have driven since and it still doesnt make up for the bad points)..... as for if you wanted to buy a hot hatch the question should be split...i may consider one as a company purchase on a short lease, my own money? never as the amount of profit in a renualt directly reflects the resale price (next to nothing when compared to RRP) and id have to live with the interior, would rather spend the extra to buy a decently designed car from the outset........

and yes im mindful that you have owned both, reality is though even you should be able to tell the difference in the quality of materials used

But you have to consider the cost which is what I referred to in an earlier post.

An Audi is always going to **** rings round one for quality of interior etc etc but does that justify the immense hike in price?. I'm not so sure it does. My Megane was fine and I thought the interior was great. Would it be rattle and squeek free after 9 years?.....I doubt it.

If I could afford a brand new S3 I'd buy one over the Megane in a shot. However I'd never spend that much money on a car. Buying used will get you a high miles S3 or a low miles Megane...personal choice and all that.

i agree but i think you aim at the extremes, if you were looking to buy a new megane your Audi option would most likely be a 3/4yr old car as opposed to brand new.... not a 9yr old car....

that said i think the Megane would be squeeking out of the box, never mind 9 yrs on.... each to their own on the interior though, although i would bet on a higher than 60% ratio for people who would agree its 'tack' in its entirety

lol, I'd preffer to walk than drive a Megane if I couldn't aford a German car!

:asskicking: Say no to French car's!

:blackrs4:

Very true. My comment about my 9 year old car was referring to the rattles/squeeks I have and also if the Megane would be as tightly put together in 9 years though which I said I doubt.

Well mine didnt squeek out of the box but we've all heard about the build quality of renaults, perhaps I was lucky. My Megane was a few years ago now when the 'new shape' with the big bum came out. Mine was plain black and grey inside and looked great. I've not been inside a later one so I'm happy to be proved wrong if the new ones are a bit cheesy.

Everyone has there own opinion, but my opinion is new Renault or old Renault, the interiors have always been *****, crap plastics and cheap crap cloth/leather...

Yawn. The same old tired cliches and misconceptions being rolled out by misguided fools who know nothing about cars. Audi's are German so they must be the best

.

Design wise, french cars have always been quirky and a little bit unusual, it makes a welcome change from all the bland euro boxes we get nowadays. Granted, the interiors are never as well built as Audi's or VW's, but honestly this is all that Audi can boast about now. Audi are the jack of all trades but master of none. BMW have better engines and dynamics, Mercedes are more prestigious and Audi have nice interiors. Great. Is the interior really the most important factor when buying a car? Unless you're a sales rep then interior build quality is not a deal-breaker when looking for a car.

Fact of the matter is, the Renault Megane R26 is a fantastic car, it's fast, fun and rides/handles miles better than any standard S3. The Clio 172/182 Cup models were also brilliant fun. So what if they're French? I can't stand badge snobs or people who buy cars just because of the image they perceive it to have. The S3 is appalling in standard form, ride is crashy, handling is wallowy, brakes are **** and the 1.8 engine is unrefined and coarse. But wait, it has a nice interior, hurrah!

Also the Laguna was the first car to get 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests, and the Clio is also very safe for a small hatchback.

if you had read the full post you will have realised that i am not a brand snob, i do however know a lot of people in the trade and was in the trade myself as you damn well should know (ive mentioned it enough)...... the S3 is not invincible, it is better at more areas than the Renault and master of none in particular, i dont and have never claimed the S3 is the best car on planet........ for you to even suggest that Renault's quirky design can hide the fact that they are built from utter ***** plastic - you MUST be deluded...... my complaint is that they have part designed a car that could have been great had it not been for them doing their usual and ruining a vehicle with some brash moment of madness. And yes the interior is one factor in this post that happens to be a massive factor that reflects on the quality of the rest of the car, the back end is another but that hides a multitudes of sins hidden behind paintwork..... the interior lets not forget is also where you spend the most time so yes id say its a pretty big factor when purchasing a vehicle (id not stereotype what the public wants in a car if i were you, that will be your demise)

As it happens Germans are damn good at what they do, Seat is part of the VAG group and i love the Leon, would I buy one??? no becasue the dash looks like a crappy piece of cardboard with holes in it for the radio channels.

so in summary get off ya soap box because your points have either been addressed or are invalid

i still miss my 172, great car which was very reliable and fun. i looked at the 225 cup before opting for the s3, just as quick really and probably better set up for chucking about on a track. however the interior is terrible, couldn't make my mind up about that ****, and the dinner party answer (when someone asks 'what do you drive?') is may be a little embarrassing.

no regrets :icon_thumright:

i want a Clio V6 before I die....

you buy a Clio V6 and go around them roundabouts like the other month and you will be dead Kitey...just an observation :)

yes, that's what I was implying!

But this is an example of the one thing I think the French do well...crazy ***** cars. Even going back to that old Citreon SM.

No Audi make some of the craziest cars....they just happen to be ludacrisly expensive...

570bhp estate anyone?

Theres no doubting the speed of which the medage r26.r gets round the ring in the right hands and their excellent safety records....god awfull cars still though imo.

....ok, crazy ***** is not the right description....but I love the fact that they put a V6 in the back of a Clio.
