First up i would like to say a big thank's to Mark (aka) Byzan A4
for taking time out to fit HID lights to my A4 b6.The new set up is
outstanding .These HID kits are the nuts.At first i wasn't sold on the idea of fitting HID's due to fact they are not a standard of the self item,
but after having poor vision at night with the factory bulbs i had to make
the jump.
When speaking to Mark at the the last meet i was (SOLD BABY) .
I drove the car last night to work and what a massive improvment.
Mark fitted the kit in no time and to look in side the engine bay there is
no sign of any wire's/ballast .Great stuff .......Mark if you come across a
big brake set up for my b6 give me a shout.

Oh and look those LEDs up for the Sides mate, get the PIAA ones, you will not be dissapointed. I found the cheap ones do not seem to last very long dspite the initial saving, it's just not worth it in the long run, especially when you have a car like yours thats a keeper.

It may also be worth thinking of swapping the High beam bulbs for Osram silver stars mate, the best value for money on a std bulb i have found, nice and white ( for a halogen) and good light output too. Do not be temtped by the cheaper blue ones, while the light looks good in the light unit, the output is **** poor

Hi Drizz the kit is 4300k,nice white colour

Just watch out for the fuzz, and take them out come MOT time or you will fail unless the installation looks OE.

VOSA have issued notices to MOT stations about the retro fitting of HID's.

This is the main reason i havent fitted them to our car. I was looking at getting the parts to properly install the autolevelling, but the cost of doing all that and fitting a bumper with the appropriate washer jets just wasnt worth it.

Its all out of the way, you wouldnt know they were there. Mine passed MOT no probs last week, i assume had my beam been out of spec or alihnment bad, then maybe the issue would have been raised. I have the washers and have the nearly autoleveilng (AKA Me) and i use it a lot to avoid the possibilities of dazzle by running them possibly slighlty low in towns and cities, but raise them when i need to see.

auto leveling, hmm maybe my next project after the Cruise control then :respekt:

Hmmmm Cruise control. Is it do-able?

I've fitted it but its not quite working yet.

I suspect an ECU fault or a problem with the speed signal, i've just not had any time to properly check it out and see whats going on.

The cable throttle cars use a vacuum actuated system with a pump in the engine bay, and a actuator bulb attached to the throttle pedal. Its all pretty stand alone, so you just need to make a loom up and get the appropriate parts.

Once i've got it working i'll write up what i did etc.

As for the HID's, its a whole grey area of mess. The law basically says that if the headlight units arent type approved for HID's you cant use HID bulbs in them, and it also says the HID system must have high pressure headlight washers and auto levelling.

So basically unless you get genuine HID audi headlight units and fit the washers and autolevelling its still illegal, however theres much less chance of anyone actually noticing. My biggest concern is that its not me driving the car/taking the risk, its the missus, and if there was to be an accident and the third party were to claim "her lights blinded me" she'd get humped for it.

I would like to declare the new dangerousest thing in exsistence:-

Motorbikes with Xenon headlamps.

One came (and I mean NIIIIAAAAOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!!!) up behind me on the A12, and with his headlamp beam on-axis I was damn near blinded. Combined with his clearly rock hard front shock and resultant bouncy-bouncy causing severe flickering...

I assume unless bikes get fitted with headlamp washers these will never be legal...

Good.

I just went and bought a set of ebay.£40+the cost of p+p

i fitted a hid kit well impressed, had no trouble on the mot even asked him if it would fail with them and said no not a problem as long as the beam did not dazzle!!as for sidelight bulbs i'd recommend piaa bulbs as i found the led bulbs like you can get from halfrauds to be crap!!

CMD do you have a link as I too am looking to buy some HID's for my facelift as the light output from my projectors is really weak.
thanks

This might be of interest to you.

Hmmmm Cruise control. Is it do-able?

Should be easy for facelift as DBW. had mine done about 5 years ago for £250 from an Audi specialist. Apparently just take off old indicator/light stalks and plug in new stalk with cruise built in, then VAG it bobs your uncle.

I wouldn't be without it!

Drizz here is what it looks like

this link includes fitting

IVE REPOSTED ON MY AUDI LIFE AS THIS THREAD IS GOING SIDEWAYS

I think 1.8 TQS' are Cable Throttle, but i may be wrong.

I wouldnt use B6 uprights, they may fit but you've no idea what it will do to the geometry, the arms are certainly different between B5 and B6.

If you want to run B6 calipers then fit B5 S4 or RS4 uprights.

US guys use them with no issues and use the B5 control arms.

It might be possible, i'd just be wanting to check the geometry very closely before doing it. The part numbers are not the same, and if the parts were directly interchangable there is no reason audi would have designed a new upright. They reuse parts all over the range of models. They'd have simply used the B5 ones or superceded the B5 part with the B6 part numbers to reduce stock holding.

Its similar to people fitting RS4 Alloy uprights to normal A/S4's. The RS4 has wider track and a wildly different offset and wheel width to the rest of the range, and it would follow that the upright designed specifically for that car would have been designed with these attributes in mind. Since the RS4 control arms are all the same as normal B5 parts, it would follow that any tweaks to the geometry would be in the upright. Many people bolt them to their normal B5's and claim they work just fine, but i doubt anyone has actually properly measured all the geometry values before and after to properly compare them...

In Australia their S4 came with Ally uprights as standard unlike here in the UK where they use iron uprights.

I’m sure the upright are the same design but the difference is the control arms due to the wider stance of the B6 and the only other difference would be the hub size.

Take a look at the B5 FWD 1.8T which was around before the Quattro.
The FWD car came with larger drive shafts and a different mounting pattern on the gear box. The question has to be asked why bother fitting smaller drive shafts to the Quattro when the FWD shaft would do the trick fine!!!

On the B6 the upright are also so ally and this I believe is down to weight plus like all people that change suspension you get it tracked after so I'm sure if there was any issue this would have been pointed out.

The B6 uprights are alloy?

Thats quite interesting!

If its truly the case that the geometry ends up the same then this would make fitting decent brakes to normal A4's quite a bit easier.

I didnt think the B6 had the stupid multi link setup the B5 has?

Now my interest has been spiked, what combo will i now need, to accomodate the V6 shafts i am running.lol

yer B6 has multilink too. Its actually a good design, and provides very consistent geometry thru the suspension travel, which helps maintain grip.

I've no idea what bearings etc the B6 uses, perhaps if you look on QH's catalog for CV joints you can see if theres any cross over between the outers you currently have, and the B6 model range?
