boot lid

Hey everyone,

Keep meaning to ask this but always forget, what is that point of being able to open your boot lid with the key? I'd understand if you could open it using the key and then the boot opens up, but it doesn't. I always thought the point of it was if you coming back with, say, bags of shopping, hit the button and the boot opens. I know you can open the boot without unlocking the whole car, but is their a point to that too because I really don't think someone would nick anything from a persons car whilst their stood next to it!

I just don't see a benefit of being able to unlock the boot, then still have to lift up the boot lid, either its my gas struts have gone or its just a silly idea!

can anyone explain why they do this?!

I think its pretty useful, and also they don't have handles which makes it look better!

The whole point is to be keyless which the boot is!

And also because they can do it! lol

I also like being able to unlock the boot with the key's middle button.
I especially like it that when you close the boot it locks again automatically.
Although I'll probably only like this auto locking feature until the arrival of the day that I open the boot, place my keys in the boot so I can do what i'm doing, then close the boot, it auto locks, and then I realise my keys are still in the boot!!


From that day on I will hate the auto locking feature!!

lol, I would prefer it if the boot would open from the button, not just unlock, because you can just unlock car and push the open button on boot lid!

I have always toyed with the idea of getting some stronger struts so it can be opened with one click. I think it'd be a bit of trial and error to get the right balance though so I never bothered.

The boot opening at the push of a button is an ok idea, but I'd prefer to have the button opening the bonnet instead.....

thats exactly what i have been doing, but are the gas struts positioned correctly for it to work? and also, where do you get stronger struts, cos i'll be up for trying it out?!

We had a Vauhall Tirgra convertable in for an MOT thats boot opened and shut by remote - cool as hell!

I was looking at this page here:

You can measure the struts already on the car then you can work out which ones to get (not necessarily on that page). The length of travel is length D. These ones can be adjusted from 5-40KG! That's a huge variation and I would be amazed if the right setting doesn't fall between 10 and 80KG total.

Connecting it to the car might not be so easy.

I use gas struts in my work and all the ones i have used have been fully adjustable.

You adjust them by simply releasing some of the gas from the strut.

However, if someone does do this , be carefull, as it is very easy to release to much gas, as a small pressure drop will make a big differance.

Also, you may find that the amount of pressure required to lift the hatch will be to much, or make it very difficult , to then close it back down.

I may have a look at this myself, as i agree it would be a lot better if the hatch opened fully by itself.

that's what I thought. it'd be very hard to close it surely. good times when you impress people by opening it with the key. bad times when you have to drive around with your boot open as you can't close it.

Been there and done that one LOL. When I was changing the boot light for an led, shut the boot and went to open it again not realising the keys were on the inside, luckily for once i actually new where the spare was. On the note about gas struts it would be nice if they were like the Merc ones. Open the boot and the whole thing springs open, not that you can compare them as the Merc has a small lightweight boot lid and the Audi has a ****** heavy whole back end of the car lid!!

The cars I've seen that can actually do this on the button (open & close) have a motor & gear system in them, Bentley Flying Spur, BMW 7 Series etc. I wouldn't have thought it would be achievable with gas struts because you still have to overcome the inertia of the bootlid, and then trying to actually close it with much stiffer struts would be harder, particularly if you had hands full of luggage.
