Hi Peeps

I am sure this question has been asked before, but would it be possible to transplant a 3.0TDI unit into my B6 1.9QS?

From what I understand, the unit wasn't introduced until the B7 Chassis, would this hinder at all?

Sorry if this question seems really dumb to those more mechanically savvy!

hmmm.... that's be an intersting one!

that B6-B8 are the same chassis, just complete skin-lift (none of the body panels match) and there always a few tweaks (dual steering wheel airbags in the B&, etc)..... but essentially they're the same under the skin, so it's a pretty good question.

I know there's some differences in steering geometry, but I doubt that affects the size of the remaining engine bay.

Putting a 3.0 TDi engine in my car would be a great transplant...but you would need everything under the bonnet, including al the ancilliaries...and I suspect a different engine wiring loom, engine ecu, etc, etc.... I would not do it, unless I had access to the entire donor car...but it would be a great project !

You'd need the complete engine and its loom and ECU. You'd also need to see what the differences are between the Immo units on both cars to see if its possible to program your IMMO unit to chat to the new engines ECU.

B7's use CANBus afaik, so the engine ECU might expect to be able to chat to the immo over this, which i'm pretty sure doesnt exist on a B6.

Possible, yes, but you'll need to do a lot of research into the workings of the ECU and immobiliser before you think about taking it on. A cursory glance over the wiring diagram will tell you what the engine ECU interfaces with, then you'll need to see if these parts are compatible with the ones in your car and if not whether you can transfer the B7 parts in.

The earlier engines werent all that bad, the ECU simply chatted to the immobox (immo1 cars) or to the instrument cluster (immo2/3) cars and that would be all you'd have needed.

When my 2.5 went pop at the end of last year I found a 3.0 TDi for sale for not much more than a replacement 2.5 - I said about it to my mechanic, he went kinda green

It would be awesome if you did it ;)

Really? where did you find the 3.0 unit?? As there very hard to come by (not that I've looked ;) )

Would need a complete donor car as would need to uprate the brakes etc... Would be one of a kind if I could do it tho..

It was a well known Audi breaker on ebay, AllAudi possibly i can't remember now. It was about £2.5k from memory.

Gotta be honest, the more I think about it the more I want to do it!!!

2.5k seems very expensive for a 2nd hand engine (although I don't want to think how much they are new!!!) If I could get my hands on one for around 1.5k or less I would consider getting it done when my current engine gives up the ghost..

Thing is, my clutch is starting to slip and I suspect the DMF with need replacing which makes for around £800 - £1000 to get just the clutch done... hmmm.. would need uprated brakes and stiffer back end, oh hang on I just fitted 320mm brakes and RS4 RARB :blahblah1:

Never say never, BUT I paid over £1500 for my 2.5 engine, and that was an exchange. The 3.0 is a few years newer, and you wouldn't be exchanging like for like so it would cost you a further premium.

I had a price of £4500 for a new short engine, and that was from VAGparts, so Audi would probably charge 30% plus on that, then you would need all ancillaries on top. In reality the only possible way would be for you to buy a salvaged B7 with the engine in .....

Much as it pains me to say it, buying a B7 would make a lot lot more sense!
