Tints on an Ibis White A3.. Advice please =]

Hiya, My Ibis White A3 is here and i am going to get some tints soon :)

I have black styling pack, lamin-x and full black interior (including black headlining)

I have been reading into previous posts but i cant really find any information on what % of tint to go for.

I would like to get the 5 windows done, however i would really like the rear windows to blend in well with the driver and passenger windows.. (If you know what i mean) I do not want there to be a major difference in the tint of the front and back windows.. Sutle is the word :p

I do not want any hassle with the police for front being too dark.. I am only 17 and i am targeted already. Passed my test 1 month ago and been pulled 5 times already.. Think i've stolen the ****** thing?!

I have the full black interior and i've heard this makes the tints appear darker.

Any suggestions/pics on what tint i should go for..

get the legal tints for the front and you could keep with the same level of tints for back or go to the next lever. where you go to get it done, they should be able to help you out a lot, they will show you the different levels.

Thanks.. Ive heard that the factory fitted windows are already at the highest legal tint on the front.. Can anyone confirm this?

Also would 35% tint all the way round be illegal? (Apart from windscreen of course)

They're not tinted at such at the factory as any tint on the fronts is illegal in the UK. Anything forward of the B pillar has to be untinted and the cops do pull people and tell them to remove them. It's happened to one or two on here already.

Hmm ive heard that they are legal if you allow 70% of light through on the fronts?.. Mabye this has changed.. Correct me if im wrong?

Also, would 35% from B-Pillar backwards be sutle and not look like a limo?

Yeah it changed a couple of years ago. There are a few informative threads on here with a link to the VOSA (I think) site with the rules. I'll try and find one if you want.

I think 35% may be too dark, but then I think the factory ones are too dark! If I could I would get all windows done to the same level (probably 25%) but as I can't I'm not going to bother.
 
Yeah, you are not allowed any tint on the front at all.

I have 5% on the back window, 20% on the rear sides and 35% on the fronts.

At night you can't really see in at all, in the day you can just about make the driver out.

The blend from front to rear is very subtle and looks good.

If i'm in town at night and see traffic police I tend to roll both the front windows down just incase, but i've not had any problems up to yet.
 
I just had meium tint all round you can still see in the car although the back gets darker but blends nicely looks great and ive not had a pull yet ...

Didnt you bring this up a while ago and said no to all round and was going for audi privacy glass if i remember ?? whats changed

One of those completely pointless laws, I love the look of dark windows all round, but dont have the balls to take hassle from the law..

Shame really!

I dont think it is pointless . Infact it is very important.

Any bike rider will tell you. You need to be able to see the driver of a car to see if they have made eye contact with you. You then know they have seen you and wont pull out on you........

Dont know if this is the reason for no tints on the front, but it may be one of them.

However, a very subtle tint where you can still see the driver is fine.

infact i would to like this done, but cant be ***** aith the hassle from the plod.
 
it looks dark altogether but inside its not massively different and whilst were getting robbed by the law speeding fines and all that then boll*X to em i say .....from inside the car if i sat the copper in the car he would probably say oh yeah its fine lol..... i hope

Thanks for that.. very helpfull.

Yours looks sutle and very nice imo. Yes when i decided about privacy glass i had already ordered.. However when i went to change the order i was told that my order would go to the bottom of the queue at the factory! :( So i decided to get them done when they arrived.

Dop you think that 50% on the fronts and medium on the back would look sutle?.. I dont want any hassle form the polis.

IIRC, from what was said on the previous thread on this matter, the VOSA mandate (e.g. the law) 70% of light must be able to pass through the front pax windows; therefore 50% would be illegal and likely to cause you nause, fines, etc. I wouldn't, especially as you are already on their radar being a young driver with a nice car :racer:.

I have 30% on the rear sides and boot and nothing on the fronts. By applying the VOSA guidelines, it would appear that you could have 30% on the fronts too*.

What we need is a Black Rat :busted_cop: /Vehicle Prohibition qualified individual to comment on from a professional perspective. I know there is at least one Traffic guy on here.

*Applied rationale, not fact.

Thanks again.. Very helpful.. I will head over to the local tinting garage and see what they are offering.. They might not even be allowed to tint the fronts?.. I'll check it out and post the details :) :moa:
 
Also, I think you'll be fine with 50% on the front, 50% isnt that dark, but dark enough to know its been tinted.

When my mate got his 1 series he had 5% on the 3 rear windows and 20% on the front windows, you couldnt see in the car at all no matter what conditions and he got away with it.

Although its your own risk!

Whilst I am sure that you are posting with the best intentions, I would suggest that telling someone that they will be 'fine' breaking the law isn't wise. I mean, would you advise him to steal [insert offence as appropriate] on the basis he might get away with it?

Did you miss the OP's comment that he has been tugged on a number of occasions already by OB? So do you not think that this will just aggravate the situation? Despite the fact 'your mate got away with it.'

IMO 30% tint on the front is sufficient to get a good look, whilst being lawful. Probably more important is the safety considerations as have previously been highlighted in this thread.

Having your tints too dark and theft arn't two comparable offences by a long way.
I'm sure the poster understands the risks of having dark tints and is able to make an informed decision using the opinions posted on here.

What 'my mate got away with' is no where near what i'm suggesting, he had 80% tint on the front windows, i'm suggesting 50%.

The safety implications are debatable, I have 65% tints on the front and 80% on the rear sides, and 95% on the back window. I have no visibility issues whatsoever.

Fella put your ruler away, I wasn't criticising your wee man. So, please read my response in context.

You have missed my points on so many levels, and from what you have said in response tells me that you will not/cannot see through the red mist enough, to realise that advising someone on a public forum to do something illegal is not 'fine', nor will it ever be.

I won't go into the analogy or the fact I am more than aware of the differences between the two offences (work it out), as I have no wish to de-rail Jacky's thread. I would hope that you are polite enough to do the same.

You may think that the safety implications are debatable but the law doesn't. As a bike rider I am quite concerned that you are out there driving with illegal tints and really hope you look more than twice at junctions.

AuldReekie is correct in the fact he stated the legal limits on how dark the windows should be, but i'm pretty sure Jacky wanted opinions on which shade to go for without getting 'too much hassle' from the police. I gave my opinion on what he should get.

As a bike rider myself (k6 gsxr600) i'd be more concerned with the fact people are putting coilovers on their A3's when they do no track driving, and test the limits of their car or suspension on the road. There has been more than one occasion where i've been on country roads and cars have been coming round a blind corner on my side of the road.
Never once have I been pulled out on by a tinted car - but several times by regular cars, usually driven by elderly or women.

I don't mean to be rude about this, but because some ponce somewhere in westminster has written a rule, it doesn't mean it's always correct.

I have coilovers on my car.

I do no track driving whatsoever as my car is an everyday driver. The coilovers have allowed me to have my car at the perfect height that I want, and the perfect damper setting for my personal preference.

If springs offered this, then I would have bought them. The coilovers have the transformed the way car handles and drives in the everyday driving.

So what you've just said is a complete load of tosh :rockwoot:
