hello chaps

Im 19 with one years no claims, a clean license, passed the institute of advanced driving test and i want an S3 however i know this wont happen in the near future.

But if i were to buy an S3 i would be paying a whooping £4000 for a year.

Im off to buy some lotto tickets!

if you can get a new s3 at 19 then 4 grand is nothing.

Lex,

Bad news on the insurance, I remember paying stupid amounts too - back in the day.

I really posted to say well done on going forward for the IAM test and passing. The trouble with the IAM at present is its image: flat caps and driving gloves. But look beyond that and there are valuable skills to learn. Some track tuition next then?

im 32 and paying about 2500 a year what a bummer

It'd have to be a pretty special car for me to part with any more than £1000 a year on insurance. An A3/S3 certainly isn't worth paying that much for!

well ive been driving a year and had one car stolen and theres no way im driving a **** box or anything under 1.8t or 2.0t ...... so i got to put up for it for a couple of years

Jeezo 10blazin thats a helfty premium for your age, as you said only been driving a year must have a major effect! were 28 and paying £240 per year with no excess to pay!

I mind back to when i was 18 and paying £2k per annum for a 2.0 16v nova though!

hah I feel your pain. I had the same thoughts.. I am 26, and stuck paying nealy 1k for a 1.6 sportback..

All thanks to the other **** drivers out there who have smashed into me over the years! I hate the fact it still bumps up my premium. Even the last one where I was parked!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, stick with it.. It will be worth it in the end.

You would be better off buying a house pal, you will see! :) I wasted thousands at your age on cars, wish i hadnt!

Whats the problem, cant your dad stand as the owner?

nope because its actually illegal and i would be paying for the car and NOT my parents!

Im not one of these young lads whose parents pay everything, i've made my money alone.

yes maybe i can SOON afford an S3 but spending 4 grand for 1year just doesnt make sense

i don't quite have more money than sense. Wish i did!

My mum says the same thing, it may be saved for a flat

Dont get too hung up on getting your own place as soon as you can. Enjoy yourself while your young, once you get a mortgage you wont be able to do half the stuff you can now.

I've got to say i don't really have sympathy for you (as harsh as that sounds). You're 19 years old and we just have to live within our means. £4000 is a complete joke to insure ANY Audi really. Just wait, be a bit sensible with your money and buy an S3 when you're a more suitable age to do so. Be sensible with your driving too and rack up those no claims

I've just turned 28 and i came off the back of a nasty driving ban early last year and the A3 was my first car after the ban. My insurance was around £1500 last year and with a year's no claims it's halved this year. So a bit of patience pays for itself mate.

£1500 was my absolute limit though, i won't pay any more on principle as there is more to life than busting your balls just to cover the overheads on a car. So that was the limiting factor when picking a car. The 2.0T quattro ticked every box car wise and i've loved owning it although by having a bit of patience and being sensible i'll be going for something a little more 'exotic' this time.

It's a case of priorities but as others have said... Don't get caught up in this property market rubbish. Most people who advise you to throw all your money into a house at a young age only say it because 'it's what's expected'. Last thing you want at 19-25 is the ball and chain of a mortgage. Just enjoy being a lad while you can!

Thats all for today's words of wisdom...

What's with the jealousy in this place? ***, grow up. So people that have more money than you should not buy better cars? Because I didn't own a car until my 22nd birthday it means noone should? But, in case the S3 is indeed out of your reach, I'll quote what NHN said to me when I was considering the S3:

Actually practise what I preach, live for today not tomorrow, buy what you want mate not what you might need in 5 years time etc, if you can afford it honestly & its not gonna stick you one in the butt monthly then go for it ...., but also caution & take time to get what you want cause our big eyes like when we were young in a sweetshop tend to take over & we make stupid decisions, thats all I will say, just dont feck yourself as they say, good luck & post up when you got your new car
This is by far the most mature advice I ever got in a forum and, apparently, I still remember it :salute:

Sorry mate but you must be reading a different thread to me. I can't see one single post with a hint of jealousy! Think people have offered pretty well rounded advice. So to tell people to grow up seems a bit off really.
Also, the quote you put from NHN is (all be it less words) the same advice as i (and others) gave if you read it all.

I'm not sure what he is on about either. Maybe he read a different thread and replied in this one by accident? I dunno.

Lex - I feel your pain.

I got my A3 when I was 19 (i'm 20 now) and I pay £2200 a year to insure it, although that is completely my own fault (points, ban, claims etc.)

The amount of money i've wasted on cars and bikes since i was 16 must be nearly 20k - if not more (and thats excluding the audi), bought, insured, done up, wrote off.

It's all a big learning curve - take advice from others but do not treat it as gospel. Your a similar age to me, this is my plan - I currently rent a house with a mate and plan to for the next 2-3 years, by that time I will have saved enough for a decent deposit and get my own place, i'll hopefully keep the audi until then too and get some decent ncb. Then i'll sell it and get a new shape M3.
Moneys there to be spent, enjoy life while you can!

Yeah same, i'm 19 with 2 years ncb. Looked into the S3 but the difference in the insurance quotes are just stupid. I wouldn't get an S3 purely because of principle and not paying companies that much to have it on the road.

I'm currently paying £1200 a year insurance which i think is Ok for my age and a 2.0 A3

Hi,

Im 22 with an s3 Facelift.

You will not stand a chance of getting an S3 until your 21 really. I did the IAM test at 18 etc etc. Had a previous history of a3's. I can almost guarantee they won;t touch you till your 21. I currently pay £1400 on mine. £4000 is alot on insuranc and wasted money. At that age it's like wasting a quarter of your yearly wage.

Dont mean to be a ****, but I am going to anyhow.

Why does every single kid need to emphasize that they "earned" their car, is dependable, responsible, and in some cases, capable of handling wonderful amounts of horsepower?

Fvck it, I'll start. I drove around in my mom's car for a few good years since getting my license because I go to school full time.

Kids these days are amazing. They can juggle between school, a good paying part time job that pays for the car financing, insurance, maintenance, and yet still find time to procure weed and cheap booze while hanging out on the streets wearing oversized pants..

yes you did sound like a ****

you are obviously getting mixed up between DIFFERENT TYPES of young people

Just because im 19 doesnt mean than an S3 has too much power

its chavs of this world who give me a bad name being younge. I've not yet crashed a car becuase i dont drive like a complete **** who doesnt know there limits AS i said i am now a full memeber of the insitute of advanced motorists and that proves im not a boy racer who will go and crash a car every weekend then buy another £300

you obvisouly miss your youth

and i dont really consider myself a Kid becuase 19 afew weeks away from 20!

GO FOR ITTT :D

Between my A3 and my Accord Type R - im spending around 3.2k insure both (well - i will be when my ATR is back on road this summer).

Yes - people think im stupid but i work, earn my own money, use to have my own business and hopefully going to start again this summer when i finish uni for the year.

Moneys only money - as long as you got a bit side for a rainy day and dont go wasting it on drugs or something stupid (even though some people think insurance is money wasted) go for it :D

You only live once - enjoy life while you can and you pulling up at uni in an S3 - as the mastercard advert says - PRICELESS :p

I am sorry if I misinterpreted these lines.

You sound very bitter for some reason mate. You had your mum pay for your car when you were younger, thats lucky.

I worked 30 hours per week at morrisons when I was in full time education at college to fund my previous cars, when I was 17-18 I went through about 4 cars - all of them £1000-2000 civics or golfs.

Theres not one other person I know who put those sort of hours in on top of college work, so yeah, I did EARN my cars.

I'm now 20 and have a very, very well paid job, if you make the efforts, you get the rewards, simple as. I fund my own car, I live in my own house, I make my own way, and I used to own extremely fast sportsbikes - faster than any car you'll have ever driven. Now I may be the one coming across as a bit of **** here but just because you have a few more years on me, it doesn't make you any better than I am, it doesn't mean i'm not allowed to have a faster car than you, nor does it mean you've worked harder than I have. So please, get off your high horse with this age vs horsepower b*llocks.

I think that was an un-needed and petty post on your behalf, i'm glad you got it out your system so you can put it to bed now.

Crunch, you mind me asking what you do for a living?
keep up the nice cars:salute:

Gentlemen

Don't lets allow this thread to get out of hand. Keep it polite.

Members of this forum can be from all sorts of backgrounds and all have different priorites but please accept that we are all different and can have different views without being right or wrong.

This forum is more about the Audi's we own rather than our own personal lifestyles. Lets keep it that way.

22 with an S3 here too. Surprised at some of the difference in insurance premiums between some people here. That said I was (pleasantly) surprised at what mine came out at too.

Previously had a 2007 Mini Cooper S and paid £945 a year. £742 for the S3. :) That's with Tesco by the way - NOT their value policy.

Too much power for a young driver? No not at all so long as you respect the car and accept the fact that you will chicken out long before the car will. :sm4:

£175 for the year fully comp me and my wife on our facelift S3! I am 33 with full no claims and zero points or accidents!

wow now that is shockingly good. Just thnk mine is nearly 10x as much!!!!

Just read this whole thread and I'm highly amused by the bitterness of some people!!

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons.....I bought myself a B6 S4 at the tender age
of 22....and only paid £1200 for a years insurance!(with elephant)

This may sound a lot of money to some of the older peeps on here, but if you consider
that my 2 previous cars were a 1.3 toyota starlet (at 17 and paid £1000+ each year)
and an 8L 1.8 non turbo a3 (at 19 and paid £1000 each year) It doesn't seem that bad
to me!

One tip I would give to anyone whose insuring a car in there own name is to (if possibe) put an old biddy on the policy as a named driver!
I put my dad (whose a massive 51 years old and as tall as the sky)on as a second
driver and the price came down by over £400!!

Wow - thats awesome mate!!

Just shows careful driving does reward you (i only got to wait another 14 years till my insurance is that cheap and keep my urges under control :p)

Haha....wish it worked like that! lol!! my Grandads 82!! Once you get over a certain age, you start to become more of a risk so I assume that the price would go up!
Defo works though.....my sisters boyfriends 30 and just bought an a3, he put my mum on his policy, a couple of days after taking it out and they refunded over £100!!..thats not with elephant either so they may all be the same. Worth a try if you know someone around 50y.o.

Weird with mine too, was cheaper with the wife on it who is 26 and only passed her test last year!....not that she is allowed to drive it!

:iagree: Feck that, I had a mortgage at 22 and I made a mess of it. My advice is also don't bother, you're 19, you have some cash to splash obviously, enjoy it! Now I'm 31 and almost ready for all that mortgage balls...maybe next year :whistle2:

If you want to move out, rent. You get all the pluses without a 20 year 200 grand weight around your neck. Who knows where you'll want to live in a few years time?

Final point, I totally agree with everyone who said 4 grand is a waste of money just to insure a car. It's a bleedin liberty  when I were a lad I had a rusty Scirocco

I currently pay £316.29 for insurance on my new A3 2.0TDI-140 Sportback SE. I'm 61 and my wife who is also on the policy is 62. We both have clean licences and no accident claims.

One thing than can make a difference is the amount of 'excess' you are prepared to accept. In my case it's only £200. Also whether you include things like Legal Protection, additional personal accident etc.

My current premium is a little more than I paid last year for my 20TDI-170 but then it is for a brand new car with a replacement clause for the first 12 months.

My wife only pays £131.32 for her VW Polo 1.4SE-80ps with a £100 excess.

It'd have to be a pretty special car for me to part with any more than £1000 a year on insurance. An A3/S3 certainly isn't worth paying that much for!

Same here!

I am 24, 5 years NCB, clean lisence and professional. I am fully comp with social and commuting applied and pay just over £500 for my A3 2.0TDI with all modifications declared

I wouldn't pay anything over £1k unless the car was exceptionally special!

I wasn't paying anything near £2k+ for insurance ever since I started!!
