I've recently had major surgery on my S3, Head/Cam belt/suspension/cooling system/brakes/paint & fianally detailed.

After all that I thought it would be ok, but since I've had it back I've covered roughly 2,000kms, and in that time its been idleing erratically, the revs have been dropping to nearly cutting out when dipping the cluch when coming to a stop, and when I start when warm it cuts out after starting if I dont use a bit of accelerator till it settles, its down on power and has a lumpy delivery when accelerating.

Now, progressively over the last 2,000 kms Its been starting to smell really fumey,a really toxic smell, not a oily, or rich burning smell, but now its unbearable when I park in the garage. There is no smoke but the tailpipes have a thick layer of soot on them.

My freind was behind me the other day and said when I was changing gear it would let a little puff of black smoke.

Today I got all the ICE fitted, Screens, Subs Amps, and Speakers (another nightmare story but I'll save that for later) and It was in there garage, they left it Idleing for about 30 mins to a hour and said the garage stunk toxic and where it was parked while idleing behind the tailpipes on the floor was about a 2 foot line of black soot???

Anyone have any Ideas on what this could be?, Im really, really fed up with this car now, I've only had it 5 months and in that time have only done 3,000kms and its been garaged 3 months of the time I've had it, Im over 10k pounds now and its soo not worth that.

Sorry for the long post, just really fed up, the more and the more things go on the car , I just think that the next thing I replace will be the last and I can just have a few months of happy motoring, where do you stop and say enoughs enough !

:(

Forgot to mention, I've had them clean the throttle body and it made no difference.

Have you got access to Vag.com? I would run Vag and see what fault codes it throws up. Then Clear them all and then go for a run it and re test it on Vag.com.

you have had such bad luck with this car.
is it an eggy smell ?

I have run a full diagnostic check today at the garage where I had all the ICE fitted, nothing came up apart from a central locking fault (which I don't have, its fine) and the seatbelt tensioner ignited fault code, which is ANOTHER long story which basically after fitting stereo the seatbelts & Seats locked.

Defo not a eggy smell, more like a sooty, fumy smell, if that makes sense lol

Get the coolant temp sender swapped, its probably running too rich as the car thinks its running in cold start mode. It's only a £20 part

Would something as simple as a temp sender cause all this? Also if it was in cold start mode wouldnt the automatic choke come on when starting whilst warm?

it could very likely be the timing sensor which sits on the front of the block just next to the oil filter.... mine used to cut out when rolling to a stop with clutch depressed, then used to take a few mins to get started again.... then once it did start it was weird to drive, when i put my foot down the boost used to cut off when it was close to max boost......and got jerky a few times after restart

must add it only did it after 10mins of driving, never whilst cold at all.....AND i had an oil service only a few hundred miles prior - id vagcom it with a cheap ebay lead first as could also be cam sensor ive been told

part is £80 from dealer, although i paid £45 for another brand after trying another pattern part from a vag specialist - that didnt work at all

its tricky to get to as you need the car on axle stands at the front, you need to remove the scuttle panel.... it only has one bolt securing it in which is 10mm, i unplugged from the top after removing all the bits around and including the oil dipstick holder then did a mixture of untightening from the top after releasing the bolt from under the car...was a pain but wow what a difference - prob easier to pay a garage to fit TBH

ok, its not temperature sensor or timing sensor.

The problem has got worse now, hesitation on part throttle, low on power.

One thing I noticed was when I dip the clutch and blip the accelerator it backfires a bit and the revs dont rise at all, I'm no mechanic, but its like when I had a motorbike when I was younger and when it floods, you wind it back and it takes a while for the revs to go up.

have you vag com'd it? it may be a coil pack but vag would most likely give you the cause..... how do you know it isnt the timing sensor? this does sound very much like what i had
