Hi All,

got the parts to fit cruise control, but was wondering if anyone has the specs of the hex / star wrench I need to get the steering wheel off, I know its not a torx, but a spline, but what size anyone?

G

How easy is it to remove a steering wheel?

Will vcds be required to reset anything once a wheel has been removed and swapped etc?

Ive seen it done when I was geting DIS retrofitted, quite easy IMHO. Disconnect Battery take off airbag then remove wheel ith Spline and wiggle it off ( remembering to mark wheel for putting it back on.

If you are going to a MFSW then yes you will need VAGCOM and possily other parts sucy as slip ring and steering ECU depending on car, PM me your chassis no and I can check for you

G

Then delete them mate as per Rob's request to us all, anyway I never discon battery & done it many times, but if you want peace of mind then go for it, take your time with parts, make sure you centre the wheel & when you remove the wheel tape the slip ring in position, do not let this turn at all, the spline & wheel are marked for centering anyway in the metal from factory, so easy to get fitted back correctly, but the slip ring must not be moved, can remove from column after tapeing in place.

Posts are deleted. I was so busy laughing at howmany times i had posted in error that i forgot to delete them lol!

Wheel removal sounds fairly straight forward.

Going to order myself a m18 spine tool for the weekend.

I have purchased a mf sline steering wheel of a 2007 a3.

This is going to replace my current non mf wheel on a se .

I have cruise control, so am i correct in saying that it will all be plug and play to get the mf working ok?

Or is this wishfull thinking? :)

If you have MFSW now then should be straight swap if its A3 to A3 mate, cant see an issue at all, just make sure you dont turn on ignition until airbag all reconnected so as to avoid the airbag light coming up, you could discon battery for this as I have VCDS so I just turn of with this when it appears after work.

What year is your a3, there is a possibility you will need a new steering wheel ECU and slipring. you are probably going to need VCDS to remove errors and reset steering angle etc etc

Have a search in threads ive posted in regarding MF steering wheel fitting.

If you can give us the part numbers of the slip ring & steering ecu then we can advise if need other bits, easiest option is to ring local dealer, give them you're chassis number & ask them which part no's for the ring & ecu mate, easy peasy & takes 5 minutes if that.

if your taking the steering wheel off how do you take the airbag off first just pull it ....

i think there is 2 torque screws that have to be undone. Access each one with the wheel at either 45 degrees left and then right .

Well this is what the guide said anyway :)

well im thinking of getting a fbmfsw and want to know how do you get the airbag of then the wheel i have multifuntion already so would this be a straight swap ....

cheers for th ehelp so far guys.

I will give the dealer a ring tomorrow and find out which part numbers are fitted.

I presume that if I ask the parts person for the part numbers for the steering wheel slip ring and steering wheel ecu, they will know what i am going on about :)

will post back when i know

cheers again:sm4:

have a pick through this thread. Lot of info but i think by the sounds of it, you shouldnt need anything else as long as your new wheel comes with the correct wires.. i think!!

Pretty sure the guys here will let you know though :)

Well i managed to pop into the dealers today as i had a call out which took me right past .

Very handy :)

Numbers are

slip ring 1KO 959 653 D

control module 8PO 953 549 F

so what do you reckon chaps?

wheel turned up today also

pictures show the old wheel and the new mf wheel.

The other wuestion is will the airbag fit the new wheel ok.

It looks the same shape so it has got to be as easy as that :)

excellent.

So now to vcds. Will i need it when i swap over to mf wheel?

I'm presuming I will but hoping i aint :)

If i do , i may need to be making a purchase...... Still sorting that gb nhn? :p

Hmm, 4 spoke to 3 spoke, doesnt that need a new airbag??

NHN, any ideas?

Scotty, you will need vcds to enable MF

well i have been putting off buying vcds for a while now.

Tbh , i really do need it :)

Been driving round with the airbag light on for about a month after doing a dbl din conversion and not being able to reset the airbag light.

So what is the rough price then for vcds.

Nhn, am i correct in remembering that you were getting them for around £200 ishhh?

If i need a new airbag though, this may change the outlook ! :p

Anybody got any links to what i need to add cruise to my 3.2 2005 a3?

you can get a roos tech microcan for £199 delivered from www.gendan.co.uk

Will do for the a3 no probs

thanks for that.

Think i will order one , that is when some one tells me that me air bag will fit :p

Or you can get the hex can usb that does them all from me if I can get the price sorted from RT

Simple really, just take your airbag of & see if it fits mate, but see if it has the cutouts for the 4 spokes underneath, if not then chances are it will be ok, interms of functionality I suspect it would work fine given dual stage anyway so that doesnt appear to be the issue there, just fitment.

halfords it is tomorrow then :)

i will try the airbag out over the weekend hopefully.

What sort of time scale are you looking at nhn for the leads then?

Oh , and the airbag, at the price for a new one, i will be making this one fit then lol!

oh, one more thing... :)

I presume it is ok the mechanically swap the steering wheel over and then code at a later date.

It will be ok to drive etc in the between time, just the mf wont work.?

Just emailed Bruce@RT to see if can sort like asap really

& yes you may have an airbag light but as long as you do as mentioned with the centering of the wheel & tape slip ring in place temp & make sure wheels not moved until new one on then all good, coding can do anytime & also remove airbag light anytime.

ok cheers for that m8

let me know if you get any updates

Cruise fitted, :)

Robin, wasnt M18, but managed to used a T55 torx anyway, Id say maybe a M16 or smaller spline.

Scottie I think you are going to have a problem if your airbag is the same as mine, but saying that if you get it working PM me as thats my next retrofit.

If it doesnt fit, let me know I have somone looking for a MF that looks like it would fit the bill. maybe do a quick deal, hopefully not but you never know

G

ok cheers for that m8

Torx on a spline bolt, lol, hopefully not fecked it for future usage mate

Trust me I was Very careful, no apparent damage to the bolt

Gonna order a new bolt and correct spline next time in in the dealers anyway..

Had a quicklook at the airbag today. I havent removed it, but it doesnt look promising.

The are cut outs around the airbag to suit the 4 spoke style.

It 'may' be possible to errmm 'adjust' the airbag by adding some new cut outs but no matter how you do it, i think it will look totally gash!!

So i think i need a new airbag:(

And the price of them may mean the s line mf will be getting sold and i will have to go and buy a fbmfsw. By the time i seel my old air bag etc , it shouldnt cost to much should it? :p

so i may be up for doing a quick deal on the wheel if interested at right price....

ohg and the m18 spline , couldnt get on in halfords that big :(

think they may have had m16 though~ so now i know that is th esize needed ! :p
