Hi guys,

I just bought myself an A3 1.8 turbo sport on the weekend and noticed yesterday that on the cold engine start there was a rather loud screeching/squeaking sound coming from the engine. I tried it again this morning and the same thing. The annoying noise only lasts about a minute but it is very loud and sounds like an aircraft. It's hard to explain so I created a video of the sound. After a minute the sound goes away and is then followed by a strange whistle noise :whistle2: (you'll hear it in the video).

Does anyone know what this could be?
The cars done 91k miles and hasn't had the turbo changed.

I've read the other posts on the forum regarding similar noises and I tried the common fixes including turning off the climate control and then starting but I'm still getting the same noise.

Just a bit worried that's all and won't get a chance to take it to a garage until the weekend. In the meantime don't want to drive it could be something big like the turbo

Thanks in advance.

Ah, is it the secondary air pump then...

Sorry, I didn't actually read your post fully...lol

As said above. Its the secondary air pump. Make sure you check the plastic pipes to and from the pump. They become brittle and split easily which can cause the noise.

Its mounted right next to the oil filter, front of the engine down by the sump. Same as on the Golf.

OK great. Thanks again everyone.

Will let you know if it solves the problem.

as above, it the same as the Golf MK4. The A3 8L and Golf MK4 have a lot in common

Hi everyone,
I have an Audi A3 1.9 tdie sportback diesel and it has 160k on the clock and only makes screeching noises when I accelerate. Does anyone know what the cause of the problem is. Please could you reply as soon as possible.

When I had bought my a3 1.8t, mine did this noise. I took It to a local garage and he told me not to drive it as the hydraulic tensioner had collapsed on the timing belt and the screech was this cutting the timing belt. Sure enough we pulled the cover off and the bearing had cut a groove into the belt.
