Guys,

looking for some advice over this one. Put down a deposit on an 08 A3 TDI from a local garage. The car has just shy of 7000 miles on it and looks and drives fine.

It is a one owner car registered from new with Newcastle Audi.

The problem is i've had an RAC check which says there's a mileage descrepancy. I'm pretty new to these checks and never had this problem before. There's no other problems and all other details are confirmed including the one owner from new. I have seen all paperwork for the car and it all appears in order.

The report however says that on 24th Sept 2008 (when the car was just under 6 month old) the mileage was recorded at 17932 and says the mileage was recorded by the manufacturer.

I've contacted Newcastle AUDI to see if they could clarify this as I thought it strange if its been clocked with one owner knowing that it can be tied back to them. Newcastle AUDI obviously have the car on record but say they can't find any record of the car being in at any AUDI dealership in the UK for servicing/warranty work etc. and can't shed any light as to how the mileage register would have that info.

I also contacted Glasgow AUDI (just in case) who also tell me the same thing.

I've contacted RAC to see if they can shed some light but they couldn't and told me that my only option was to get the owner to fax the mileage register registering the discrepancy and they would investigate. Problem lies that they can't give a timescale and obviously, although, I believe it to be a mistake, I'm not wanting to be buying it whilst a dispute is ongoing which could be weeks or months before its sorted.

The owner/garage deny any knowledge of why it would be recorded as being at that mileage and state the mileage is correct.

Has anyone had this sort of problem before or can you suggest any other options.

Cheers.

Go somewhere else mate as obviously your concerned & they can be clocked back & I actually know of one company up there that can do the newer clusters aswell, there's plenty of cars out there, another option is to get the garage to give you a signed confirmation with all there details stating the mileage is correct, another option is to get someone with vcds to login & check the ecu mileage against the cluster mileage, get the garage selling to contact the person they bought from & check whats happening, number of options available to you mate.

NHN,

although the car is being sold/advertised through the garage its actually the owners son who is selling the car. They both confirm that they have no knowledge of the descrepancy and say the mileage on it is genuine. It doesn't overly concern me but, being a very cynical person, it obviously bothers me a bit.....

What is VCDS mate take it its something to do with the diagnostics. The garage is relatively near to GLASGOW AUDI take it they could do the check wouldn't mind paying for it as last time it was only 50 quid for a diagnostic on my A4. I'm sure the seller would agree to this. If not obviously I would defo be walking away.

Cheers.

if this problem has been thrown up this time, it may be worth considering that when you come to sell the car, it may arise again and put a lot of potential buyers off from buying your car.

Just a thought

Stay away mate. It's up to them to sort out the problem. As Scottie says, you'll have problems in the future.

Very good point tbh.

Had thought of this one which was why I was hoping to get it sorted and amended through the NMR. I've contacted the seller who is quite happy to give me my deposit back. He has now faxed the NMR to query the mileage and explain circumstances. As an aside I phoned them as well to see about procedures. Explained that they claim that the mileage was recorded by the manufacturer but I told them i'd contacted AUDI who tell me thats not the case. She then tells me that if the mileage is queried then they will contact the manufacturer however their system doesn't always record exactly where this mileage has came from!!!!! If they get the same answer as me then even though they can't find out where the mistake has been made they won't amend the NMR even if the manufacturer confirms that they didn't provide the mileage. WTF !!!!

I'll let you know how I get on anyway though my faith now in the NMR now is zero.....

Well guys the mileage problem is sorted out. NMR have done their enquiries and confirm their records were incorrect. They now have it sorted and an HPI check reveals no discrepancies. good news is i'm picking the car up next week. Woo hoo.

Must say though my faith in the NMR is nil. If the circumstances had been different i'd have walked away from this car thinking that the guy had clocked it.

Cheers.

If I were you I'd go to another company and carry out another HPI just to be sure.

Urrrrrmmmm, which ring wings would they be mate, lmao

Hi
Good luck with trying to get the register amended. I too, on a previous car, had a discrepancy that was obviously wrong,I had all the paperwork for servicing etc etc. Photocopied, rang on numerous occasions but never ever got it altered. Didnt even get a reply if i remember correctly. Car has now been sold so no doubt someone else is having the same problems.
A mileage discrepancy doesn't always reflect 'dodgy' dealings though. For instance I had a friend (who has a garage) to HPI check a motor on their HPI account. The mileage was something like 7500 but I just gave him an estimate, something like 7200 'cos I could'nt remember what it was exactly. Anyway it had just been serviced (unknown to me) and the mileage recorded and obviously went into the NMR. That came back on the HPI check as a mileage discrepancy 'cos it was 300 miles less than reported at service time. Thing is it stays on record so be very careful when even giving your mileage for valuations etc etc. Also discrepancies occur when people put the wrong mileage down when filling in a V5. HTH

EDIT Just read your previous post...well done on the amendment lol
