Found rust on your roof?

I think them tools they measure the thickness are about £400, nice toy! Hopefully mine will pass their criteria and the work get done. Ideally i would over the moon with the bonnet being fully resprayed. The rest of the bodywork is immaculate, thanks to my machine polisher and a very patient girlfriend keeping me company.

Im from preston, i think im the only person in Preston to have an 8L S3, their rare as a rocking horse s**t. Which obviously is a good thing!

Hi all ,

im taking a freinds car in soon about this i spoke to audi customer service then spoke to service . Spoke to the manager of the bodyshop and now going to take down later for them to take a look at the car and use the paint tester etc .

Hope it goes ok

Basically as long as the car hasn't been resprayed by a non Audi preferred body shop you should all be ok. When I took mine to Hatfield Audi's preferred body shop for the paint depth tests they spotted straight away that the rear quarter had been resprayed. I had only owned the car for 2 months and it was HPI clear and there was no paper work for any repairs so I was a bit shocked. I got denied the work under warrenty and spent a few hours calling round all the garages I had paperwork for to see if they had any details on any repair work. That was a dead end so I'm having to shell out for the work, also getting bonnet and bumper done at the same time.

what car did u get as a courtesy car?

mine is a Tdi not a S3 but they offered me a courtesy car but seemed like hassle i can walk to work anyway so few days didnt bother me....

they were very pleasant anyway checked my paint depth too all std paint so thats nice to know...

just need to fit few new parts i got when it comes back now :)

I'm getting my paintwork done in 2 weeks so just picked up the piece of gutter trip from Audi. £28 including VAT. Their approved bodyshop quoted me £400 just to get the roof done but I've found a mate of a mate that will do the roof, bumper and bonnet for £200 :salute:

I saw a black s3 when i was comin out of kfc on the docs last weekend, could of been you maybe?

Does anybody know what the thickness of the paint is meant to be?

just asking because mine was 20.5 on the roof 20.1 on the rear quarter and 20.1 on the bonnet. thats the places where they measured it! so god only knows!

Took my car to a Audi dealer yesterday says he'll get back to me in about a week because the warranty manager wasn't in. He did say though that he had never seen this problem before. Where is everyones rust, is it on the outside quarter of the roof on on the actual gutter strip?

Well i popped into audi i had it all arranged the bodyshop manager was there and the warrenty guy . They got the paint tester out and went all over the car i showed them the rust patches and they just asked how long you had the car etc and we said not that long then they said well its up to the customer to notice this and its not upto audi it had audi full service and the warrenty guy said its up to the customer to check the rusting etc . I said its still a common defect and he just kept saying when you bought the car did u notice this and if this was caught early it could of been repaired !
the wrote a report with photo's etc and said they would get back to me .

Its like they didnt care as its a old car ???!

I took mine to a Audi Approved Body, just like everyone else they took the paint depth machine and checked every panel, also took photos.

I was told the report will go to Audi in germany and I should know within 48hrs.
Just as promised a phone call to say work was approved.
But guess what they said they would paint both rear quaters and both front doors as well as roof because they had noticed a blister in the paint at the bottom of the panels.

They have said because there is a lot of paint to do did I want the rest doing at ridiculous price I said of course YES PLEASE.

Just to confirm the bubbling rust on the roof is very common the body shop told me they have done loads. They even have a step by step guide by the manufacturer how to do this.

If any one needs help or issues let me know and I will try to help.

So some people get the claim done and some dont ?

I took my S3 to reading audi last week and the guy from the associated body shop seemed happy that it was a warranty job. I got a call today saying that I needed to go back since they had lost the camera images they took. I suspect that Audi UK have told them to go back and measure the paint thickness on all the panels. They asked me to go back and deal with another guy at reading audi who deals with their warranty claims, I have a bad feeling about this now.......

well i got the phone call today saying it had been approved. booked in for the 5th may. happy days!!

Good stuff AS3TOM, well hope they approve mine this friday. Where is yours corroding again?

Dont think that was me at Preston docklands last weekend mate

****** hell - just found blistering along both my roof rails. Is there anywhere else on the car i should check other than the bottom of the doors?

common common common! really bad design fault with the a and s3's. had it on mine. mines a 00 s3 and i took it into audi about the rust on the roof, full respray of the roof under warranty thankyouuuu very much! they wouldn't do the bottom of the doors though (again another fault with the s3's) had to get another company to sort that for me. keep hastling, if it's a 12 yr warranty surely they can't say no if its only 10 yrs old....:keule:

just to add my two penneth,

i first noticed roof bubbling back in 2006, on both sides of my 2001 S3. The audi approved repair place agreed to fix this no problems. Said it was common fault.

Since its repair i have had to have both sides done again due to a return of the same problem. This time under the body-shops warranty not Audi's.

At least its fixed (again)

Guys, just a quick reminder, If your car has been painted by a non approved Audi repairer in the past and you try to claim they will refuse you. If the roof or quater panels have been painted, and they are not the right thickness on a paint reading machine, they will refuse.

Audi have given all approved bodyshops a detailed 20 page booklet on how this job has to be done so it does not happen again(very costly to Audi).

If you car is a import it does not matter, if the car does not have full service history it still will not matter.

All Audi centres know about this, they should not be refusing anyone if they do you must ring Audi UK and complain, because they are getting well over £150 per hour for labour excluding materials and paint!

Hi ,

Had a phone call today to say it has been approved :) Going in next week

its starting to bubble along the side of the roof guttering on both sides! let me know how ya get on matey!

West London Audi have done 2 S3's for me now, both high mileage no questions asked.

well picked mine up today and TBH bit annoyed! they have painted the roof and both rear 1/4's in fixing the roof rails,,, to my delight they repaired a scuuf on the rear arch the prev owner did.... BUT the first thing that SMACKED me in the face was when i walked up to the car i instantly saw they never removed my rear lights and when demasking the car have pulled the paint and its peeled back!!!! :gun2: he tried to blag it and i had none of it, on further inspection there is pin holes in places too and the roof rails haven't even been put back on nice.....

So i am taking the car back tues to be redone (which the bodyshop chap said to anyway) and i WILL be kicking up a big fuss of how it seems they RUSHED the car!!!

2 other things were that the paint also seemed to be quite heavy on there too orange peely and they didnt even flat or polish it! ALSO the chap rought my car to the front got out touched the roof then went back for 5 mins then come back and i checked where he was touching and he's touched it up with paint so they haven't even got it perfect on 1 place on the roof rail!!!!

not happy :banghead:

If it is under warranty, and no work has been done, have you thought about getting watchdog involved?

Sorry to hear that never heard of audi doing such a bad job !

Hello, ive had this problem, i took my car to Audi Kidlington. They sent me to thier bodyshop in Newbury, all was going well as they booked my car and gave me a loan car. I got a call after a week to say my car was ready, i went to pick it up and i was really ****** off!!
There was shading all over the a pillar and rear quarter, they didnt even pain the whole panel!! Plus there were dark marks showing in the clear coat.
I told them i wasnt taking it, the painter was really ****** off. They took my car back in and gave me a brand new Merc loan car!!
I thought all was good until i went to pick my car up again a week later, there is now a really bad blue tint to the new paint and marks on the front wing.
They had also put the wrong radio code in too many times and locked the radio, think it was the ****** off painter, this meant a trip to the main dealer to get it un-locked.
My car is now booked in again for the 27th of April, we will see how it goes this time.
I cant believe the way i have been treated and the quality of their work, they are the approved bodyshop around this area. They always say they didnt spot the defects before they released the car, rubbish.
I will keep you updated as to what happens next.
What are your thought on this?

OMG im dreading putting mine in now !

This is F*****g disgraceful, definitly should go to watchdog or rogue traders about this, there's one thing doing a bit of a dodgy job but its another thing stealing money out of the ashtray.

thought i'd update this slightly my car has now been back with audi (well VW who do the paint for them) for over 1 week and i have heard nothing so wil be calling them today asking what is taking so long!? :nunu:

Got mine back yesterday morning... Done a VERY good job blending the paintwork in on a 10 year old car!! They also over sprayed slightly so got a free whole roof respray too. I asked them to buff the whole car with a machine too, did it no questions asked =D. Very happy apart from the fact that my stereo reset due to the battery being disconnected and i've lost the code for it =(. Overall they done a damn good job though it did take 5 days to do. Had a courtesy car though so it aint so bad.....

The only update i have got is, i took my car into audi about 2 weeks back and they still haven't got back to me, might phone them up tomorrow.

Anyone taken their car to a south london/berkshire Audi and had a successful response?

I went in past Audi Aberdeen last Friday and got a call yesterday saying the work for the roof had been approved and when do i want to drop the car off.. I asked about the passanger side rear panel as this also has a little bit of bubbling rust and they said 'Audi have been declining them ones lately, but im sure when they do the roof they can sort the panel to' I'm gonna try and hold them to that, rust rust and a warranty is a warranty!

Only other thing is if i want a courtesy car i need to wait until week beggining the 18th may for one and i need to put it on my own insurance??

well went to pick mine up today and its STILL a joke of a job pin holes and flatted out parts and polished to try and hide there bad work!!! a run in 1 place... the roof rail is pitted too.... SO kicked right off and they kept it YET again and this is now the 3rd time and 3rd week they have my car to ''FIX'' there crap paint work... admitidly this is VW not audi as audi down by me gets vw to spray for them but the work has been VERY shoddy.... its the final straw tho now after laying into there bodyshop manager for the 2nd time who denied 'bodging' it if its not done properly this time i will take it round the corner back o audi and ask to speak to there dealer manager and get this messy as going back 3 times is a joke! and they have now given me a golf 1.9d (not TDI) instead of the vw fox which is still not up to the std of my A3....

still totally pee'd off rant over for now :nunu:
