I have been hunting for a laptop for ages with backlit keys, but only one I can find is the macbook which is an overkill for what I need

Anyone know of any others?

Alienware do one. they are pretty expensive tho and probably over kill aswell

thanks for those, 15.4 screen little large tbh fella, I did check out the dell site uk but crap tbh, I'll keep looking & also thinking macbook with bootcamp or parallels is possibly last resort, we'll see

The macbook keyboard may be backlit, but its not nice to use at all. i briefly considered buying one, as its nice and small/light etc, but after poking at the keyboard for about 30secs in a shop i decided it wasnt for me, and was quite glad i'd wandered into the shop for a browse rather than making an impulse buy on ebay.

Ended up picking up a Dell d420 off ebay, which is lighter and smaller than the macbook, but without the apple sticker making it 3x the price, and has a nice solid dell keyboard, and although its got a slightly slower cpu (1.2ghz vs 1.8+) the newer D430 has the faster chips if you need the extra CPU power (which lets face it, for browsing the net and the like just isnt needed)

So what you're saying is the D420 has backlit or not fella, lol

Yeah I was wondering about the macbook, lots of aspetically pleasing things but usability not to sure about to be honest & TBH OSX for me was useless for me, but now Jobs is on his way out I'd say Mac might drop down a bit, thats my thought, have you seen the guy, hormone imbalance my ****, I'd say his pancreatic cancer is back & this time for good which is a real shame if thats the case cause he is, even if I'm windows man, but he is a genius in business, what he's done to apple is to be highly commended, lets hope its not as serious as it really does look & to take 6 months out now when economic problems, does make you wonder

Nah it doesnt have a backlit keyboard, i was just saying the keyboard on the macbook is horrible, to me anyway.

Not really seen any news about jobs, but i dont particularly like apple becuase of the fanboi nature all its followers seem to take. Dont get me wrong, the ipods are awesome, but apple users all seem to have some superiority complex.

People tend to jump into these "xyz OS sucks" pigeon holes and it ****** me off. I run windows and linux on various systems, i've never used OS-X due to never owning a mac so i cant really comment there. My desktop at home runs Vista, the old laptop had ubuntu on it and the d420 has XP. I'll be putting ubuntu onto the d420 at some point, i was holding off becuase i've been contemplating changing the harddisk to an SSD. Not 100% sure yet though.

I can appreciate the coment about mac users & there nose up in the air, its funny with there superiority, makes me laugh, Ipod is good but there heals are getting bitten at now fella with all the technology coming out, even with crap economy still think its gonna be exciting year

I didnt say it sucked, I said it was useless for me, graphical designers of course are the most beneficial, but for me everyday use not my cup of tea

Mr Shuttleworth has been working with his billions very well huh, but still not linux convinced even if its free

I've used debian for a while, and while i've never had a problem with that, ubuntu seems to round everything off nicely into a "it just works" scenario for desktop use. I still use debian in a server environment, but really like ubuntu on the desktop.

Its also nice when things work out the box on a fresh ubuntu install that dont on Windows, often you spend time hunting around for a USB stick to put those missing wireless or ethernet drivers into your fresh windows install, or dig out the correct sound driver for the motherboard, whereas these days with linux it all just works. :)

I'll go play with 8.10 soon then

Have to admit thats little annoying with drivers but easily resolved within few minutes, I mean once the network drivers in place then thats it really for me as everythings on the NAS anyway, I do find vista is alot better with drivers within the windows update, seem more upto date, nothings perfect but its better than xp for sure

At last there is a god of some type, backlit keyboard & half the price of cacbook:

Best thing is its not even gonna cost me as she owes 3 presents, whoooppppeeeeee

LOL - problem is that that HP still has one major problem - it runs Windows by default:nyah:

Linux is nice, nowhere near as easy to use as OS X - I mick about with it on a VM

I love my MAC, but work in Windows server support... go figure :)

Masochist

Yeah, I like a bit of spanking :)

Used to love my PCs with Linux running, but as soon as Intel Macs came along, I saw no reason not to switch: easy to use, reliable and if I need to do some bash scripting, then Mac OS X is based on BSD, which has it's roots in Unix. Sorted... Open that terminal and bash away :)

newer macbooks and macbook pros have intel chips so just dual boot with windows and osx best of both worlds :)

thats what ive done for my friend anyways

now no limitations to software...

Which studio one have you got cause I was eyeing up the studio xps 13, if its this then I might grab this & an HP as mrs wants new one, so can choose best then & give her lesser model lmao

Well I ended up buying 2 top of range studio xps 13 laptops for me & mrs, came with backlit keyboard, but ****** me of finding out they wernt run of a light sensor, but such is life cant have it all, but damn they're well spec'd & better than most desktops, so that'll do me for now & will get some wimax/wwan cards & fit.

Just bite the bullet and get one of the new macbooks, I've just got one to replace my old macbook pro, its AWESOME!

As for the Mac Vs Windows, Mac gets my vote every time! They work so smoothly and hardly ever have any crashes etc

No thanks, as per the recent MS ads "Laptop Hunters", its all about value for money & trust me I got that, anyway I'd only stick windows on it anyway if I found one for cheap enough price as I certainly wouldnt pay there quite literally rip of prices.

what's AWESOME about the Mac? what is it that make it AWESOME? the specs? design? look?

Mac vs Windows: I use Windows Ultimate 64bit, crashes? what is this word 'crash'?

lol

Well I decided to go for the MacBook Pro. 17" Anti Glare screen with backlit keyboard...

Mac over windows.. Nothing, it's personal preference. Mac's can and DO crash! Just like cars can and DO break down.

The spec's are not awesome for the money, you can get a higher spec windows laptop for less money. However the features such as the backlit keyboard and the 8 hours battery life make them worth their money.

I am a convert now, and hate my windows machines!

Again, each to their own..
