Oh, by the way don't for for DSG if you have any interest in fast driving at all. I have driven several DSGs and totally hate them. Technically they are amazing, but it is like playing on a playstation. You just feel remote from the actual job of driving.
put in order of preference: a3 2.0T, a3 3.2v6, golf mk5 gti, golf mk5 r32

Strange you say that, I don't find that at all on mine. In fact sometimes it can be the opposite, as the DSG makes changing gears so effortless, I sometimes squeeze in a couple of changes where I might not bother on a manual.
I chose the DSG mainly as I've got a dodgy knee and a long drive in a manual gives me really bad clutch-knee, but the more I drive it, the better I find it.
I think I get really lucky finding one within 20 miles then! I did practically bite the sellers hand off to get it though.
On the fuel thing - I get 26-30 mpg on my 2.0Tfsi, so it's a little better than the V6, but not a whole lot.

It's a personal taste thing isn't it. I hate the remoteness of the DSG while my brother thinks it is the best thing ever!!! Probably best to try the DSG before you buy if you've not driven one before.

I ran a demo car with DSG and after the novelty wore off (after about 10 minutes), I found it really made the driving experience quite soulless and remote. To me whilst I get it for around town driving, it is more to go wrong (particularly given VAG recent reliability), something else to take the human element out of the system (no I don't care it can shift faster than I can), and overall I just like stirring the big mechanical handle.
definately need to try the dsg, but those who like it, sounds all positive

Couldn't agree more. My last couple of cars have been autos, so I knew the DSG would be similar to live with, but a step forward.
If you're used to, and prefer driving manuals, I can see why DSG might not appeal.
have owned all manuals, but have driven auto cars in the past and love the easiness and go factor.

That's what I like with DSG - you can leave it in auto and forget about it, or knock it over into manual and have complete control with the paddles.
i just read evo (magazine) online on their r32 long term dsg and not the greatest write up compared to press etc.
I'm not aware of any automatic / semi automatic / automated manual that Evo have said particularly good things about!
Those guys are generally very experienced keen drivers, and when it comes to ultimate control, a manual is the best option. However for the rest of us, DSG has a lot to offer.
another one to add to the mix, is the audi a4 2.0T DTM or just the 2.0T, same as the a3 and gti engine
Haven't tried the A3 3.2 but looked at the rest before I got the S3. My personal preference would be the
GTi - it felt more agile than A3 2.0T and particularly the R32
R32 - narrowly getting the nod over the A3 due to the traction from the 4wd
A3 2.0T - still a good car but probably suffered as I tried it back to back with the S3.....
In my opinion they're all good cars. The V6s will likely be hammered in the 2nd hand market at the moment due to running costs though so you might pick up a bargain. At the same time though they may be less saleable in a couple of years time than any of the 2.0TFSI cars.

not trouble getting average 25mpg in my 3.2 and I give it a right pasting very oftenDef prefer over GTI/2.0T, and its basically the same car as the MKV r32 (pq35 floorplan/engine) but less bling and half the price!
i'm just not 100% sold on a3 sportback look compared to r32 5 door, plus apparently the r32 is more direct in steering and sings better too
