New Ford Focus RS

Hi there, it won't get anywhere near 30mpg. I have an ST currently, city driving
is around 18mpg and that's not being overly heavy footed.

Motorway at absolute best ie staying under 2000rpm and generally driving like Miss Daisy I've barely squeezed 29mpg out of it - which I have to say was mindnumbing
for 200 miles.

Hi therer,
Does the interior of the RS differ in any way over the ST's interior?

Yes the RS has some lightweight Recaros, other than that its just colours and badges.

Not sure to be honest...personally I think the Focus ST interior is ok although not quite to the standard of say an S-line. The Recaros are the best seats I've ever had.

I guess they are the same as the S3's optional buckets - minus the full leather.
I see you are based in LUX. I do inter company business with my office there - Panalpina World Transport..we have around 500 ppl working there..just wondered if it
was a small world ?

Hmmm, I quite like the RS! It's a very objectionable car, but I quite respect Ford for doing that to a production car. And if I bought one it would have to be in the lairiest colour, so green it is!

It sure is a small world. Its not even a 5 minute drive from me :)

Like many I said I like it, but only in white, would I own one, probably not, however I will definately be test driving one

Impressed with what they have achieved with the Quaife front diff though...does it fit an S3?

I do like the RS (not in kermit green tho).

I think its a bit slow tho (0-60 5.9,60-100 around 8!) and a mate of mine who works for a ford dealer went to the launch thing and was told the engine was almost maxxed out so there wont be a huge amount of extra power aviliable without spending mega bucks.

As good as it is I think the image is just too much..

Im going to wait until VW release the Golf with the new 2.5 5 cylinder turbo engine.. Thats going to be gooooood!

Same here - New Golf R20T looks awesome.
Set to replace the R32 and features the new 5cyl turbo engine!
Rumoured to produce circa 270bhp with 0-60 in 5.0secs dead!
Expected to cost £26K.
Surely no contest against the FRS......

I do quite like it , would i spend 27k ( after options ) on one , no!

On 5th gear , it said 0-60 was 6.2 ( i can't remember 100% ) power and torque are limited in lower gears to stop it spinning/torque steer.

I think Ford have certainly moved the games on with its trick suspension and come up with a techincally advanced car - and have recently started to make cars that handle well. Mostly with the Focus !
Looks wise I thinks its over the top - every boy racer with a 1.2 corsa + the obligitary K&N filter on will be trying it on at the lights !
It will be very interesting to see how it copes with the British poorly maintained low grip roads - instead of the nice smooth spanish roads its been tested on !
I dont for one minute think thats its fuel figures are accurate - ask any owner of the Focus ST and most say it struggles to get more than 23 mpg !
Have Ford released how many they intend to make ?
As an everyday car not for me

Richard

I'm also a long-standing Ford fan and think the new RS looks great. It continues a long line cars which are usable everyday but give the drivers something to be proud of.

The green colour is a bit OTT but last October I saw a facelift S3 in the showroom at Audi Huntingdon in a very similar colour, and it actually looks pretty good!

Comparing to the S3 - and indeed, other competitors - is tricky. The S3 is a premium product and much more understated so the only potential buyers weighing up the two together will not be brand-conscious. Where the RS will make a dent I think is against the Mitsubishi and Subaru rally-replicas. The Focus is a car with plenty of manufacturer racing/rally heritage but without the high purchase price or silly running costs. It deserves to succeed.

I like the RS, but I'm not so sure I could actually bring myself to buy it.

I totally respect the fact that Ford push the boundaries of technology when it comes to RS stock. I placed an order on the S3 ahead of seeing one, and whilst I'll admit the 2 cars are very different kettles of fish, I felt that the S3 lacked any real innovation other than Haldex and a bigger intercooler than the Leon Cupra.

Yes it's an understated car, but in some respects it lacks flair, invention and any real differentiators above its cheaper VAG cousins to fully reflect the >£30k (with extras) asking price. I don't dispute its not a good car, just a little bit of a missed opportunity.

Some magazines say the old RS had torque steer to the point of it being undrivable...

Maybe if the limp wristed Journo had driven nothing but a basic Micra previously, it might have...but as quick cars go...there was nothing to write home about. Certainly nothing that ANY FWD car with a LSD doesn't do.

The only way is to go blag a test drive.

It might be 25k new but apparently its going to end up closer to 30k if you want decently spec'd.

And lets be honest Ford would have given it awd but they must keep the price down to make it competetive. Awd would have added a couple of grand to the start price putting it right up next to the S3 and plenty above the Megane.

Give me the S3 any day.

It's disgusting. Tea tray on the back, bit of an F1 car stuck on the rear bumper, rubbish looking holes in the bonnet, gopping great big idiot mouth, and it's wrong wheel drive. Gayland.

I'm by no means an Audi fanboy but I wouldn't even consider this Focus thingy while the S3 exists. R20 Golf would be much more my cup of tea as well. Maybe I'm just old (31 :lmfao:) but I couldn't drive that, it looks like something my 5-year old little brother came up with.

Nothing to do with badge snobbery either, if somebody wanted to give me a RWD Sapphire Cosworth I'd tear their arm off

I just don't really see any reason to buy this car to be honest. Tell me anything it does better than an Evo X for similar money. I think it looks worse, interior looks worse, i bet it'll be less reliable, FWD as apposed to 4WD. Hmm... Not for me thank you!
