Does it fit and if so how easy is it to swap as i hate the B6 steering wheels.

Tom

yes it will fit but the b7 airbag is a dual stage so you might have some problems if you had an accident

I've changed mine and yes it is straight forward to do! However I got these to do mine as I wasn't 100% sure I would be able to complete it without any hic-ups when coming to recode it with VAGCOM.

http://www.vwcruise.com/index.html.

Gareth who owns the company really knows his stuff. I also got him to fit cruise control as well seems the steering wheel was coming off anyway. Yes you do have to change a few wires on the loom because of the dual stage airbags the the B7 wheels have but it's possible.

Some people say that you shouldn't do this as you can't be 100% certain that the airbag will deploy correctly (this is true as nobody as far as the forums know has crashed one yet!) The B6 only has a single stage airbag and this is where the problem lies but what they do is just wire up the high impact airbag only. The best thing to do is speak with Gareth and see what you think after that.

It's certainly not a cheap modification to do as you will need a new slip ring as the B6 ones aren't compatable with the B7 wheels. You will also need a new ECU controller if the wheel you buy is multi-function.

There is someone on a forum now whose friend had a dual stage in a B6 and the airbag did not go off in an accident... I will try and dig up the thread

I've read on another forum somewhere that a few people that have also installed a B6 wheel on a B7 have wired both stages up! I wonder if this is also what this other person did ? Interested to find out.

The idea of the two stage airbag system is that one airbag is for low impact and the other for high impact. There not designed to go off together. The B6 only has a high impact airbag so this is the only one you wire up.

With all the issues associated with incorrectly-wired / installed airbags, and no real way of testing - who want's to ram their B6 into a wall? I'd prefer to either find a way of integrating a single-stage into the B7 wheel.

Or, better still, have the airbags NOT connected at all.
I feel older, non-airbag cars weren't that deadly without them - I've had several, and am still alive.

The problem with having no aigbag could be that you invalidate your insurance, especially if it did not deploy in an accident and you were claiming for injuries. Just a word of warning !

Thats one one of the reasons that I've not changed my B6 wheel for the later B7 versions until someone can actually prove the workings and wiring are correct.

I am gonna do some research on this when I've got a chance as I find it hard to believe it wont work cause any sign of miswiring the controller pops the lamp on the speedo anyway, I'm gonna check which one is actually connected in mine so can evaluate if its an issue, might chat with airbag company aswell

Sounds like I've opened a box of worms! Think I will wait until some further research is done, thanks all for your replies.

How about buying a B7?? Problem solved....:footy:

Has anybody got any further on this or managed to confirm any more details?

I'm looking at buying a good solid car for longer journeys and am lining up viable A4 candidates, but the only thing missing from virtually all the B6's I've seen seems to to be multi-function steering wheel...

After clocking up several hundred miles in a B7 S-Line last year, I am keen for one of those, but if it's going to cause problems, then I'll settle for a B6 multifunction wheel if such a beast exists??

There are a few B6 Audis with an MFSW. The steering wheels are sometimes on e-bay - the German e-bay seemes better for Audi A4 B6 MFSW :

http://cgi.ebay.de/Multifunktion-Le...229|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318#ebayphotohosting

A lot of folk prefer the sporty 3 spoke wheel - which do not come in MFSW guise....this wheel on the German e-bay is the 4 spoke SE version....
You will need the right slipring (schleifring) as well......then once fitted has to be VAGCOMed...
Just gets a bit expensive with the pound euro exchange rate so crap at the moment ...and the people who are selling the steering wheels certainly know how to charge for them....

As for putting the B7 steering wheel in a B6 - forget it ...£1000 for a freakin steering wheel  thats a lot of beer vouchers if you ask me !

FYI guys: the B6's only have on (high impact) airbag... and the B7's ahve two... so when fitting, a B7 wheel to a B6, just wire up the high impact and leave the low impact airbag alone... that way you have exactly what you would have in a B6 anyway, plus a B7's wheel and controls, etc.

I've got mine in and it looks the business!

Even better: it's not got the S-Line red badge, so relatively stealth

lostbok, that looks really good. did u do it yourself?

just out of curiosity, what steering wheel did u used to have? the sport one by any chance? do u still have it if it was?

That looks the dogs, really suits the interior of your motor:o.k:

thanks guys - really pleased with it...

nope, I didn't fit it myself: I went the lazy route and got Gareth at VWcruise.com to source the new FBSW and fit it.... including fitting the high-impact airbag to the B6's high-impact sensors (there's a redundant airbag in there that's not actually connected, 'cos the B6 only has the H.I. sensors)... prices a little steep, but that bloke knows his stuff and to be honest there's not really a cheap way of doing it.... and if there is, I'd be suspiscious.

Plus all the steering wheel controls work.... and once I've saved the dosh to get them all done, so will the Bluetooth and MMI (edit: or is it the SDS I'm thinking of? The voice control stuff).

mrjheeta - yeah - I've still got the old wheel - it's the three-spoke leather (non-multifunction) wheel:

Are you interested in it? Not sure what they're worth, but i'll have a look on eBug. (edit: opinions people? what is a three-spoke with airbag worth?)

I'll be impressed if you've got MMI in an A4!! I guess you have the RNS-E instead?

Steering wheel does look good though :icon_thumright:

lostbok, let me know what you want for it... including the airbag if u can! lol n ill c if i can get some cash together... pm me when you're ready...

There's some pics in the B6 forum: Topic "what's it worth" NB: 1.5Mb of pics.

Only prices I've seen online seem pretty heavy (and I assume for new ones).

Keen to sell it, otherwise I'm just gonna leave it somewhere where it gathers dust until it's useless and worthless...

ha ha... that would be telling....

He normally charges £950, but gave me a little bit of a discount as I came to him and I was getting the RNS-E at the same time.

wow that's a large number, but must admit it does finish off the interior, you just need some new pedals now lol

hmmm... not something I normally look at.... if there's enough grip on the middle one to keep my toes hooked onto it nicely, that's all I'm usually after.... and I've not driven the Quattro in anger yet, so I'm still fine with that like it is...

not that i'm going for this right now, but is £120-ish about right (incl delivery) for a set of Audi OEM S4 pedals and footrest?

This on eBay Germany.

Sounds right as Vagparts used to sell the three pedals for £50 and the footrest for £50.

correct that's not a MFSW at all.... and you can't retro fit the multifunction buttons and/or dials to a steering wheel, you have to replace the steering wheel with a multifunction version.... and there's a wiring loom (I think they're about £20 or so) to connect it all up and then u just VAGcom it to enable the features.

I cheated and just got mine done for me :)

With regards to just swapping over one steering wheel for another, assuming it's for the same generating of Audi, then I believe it's pretty straight forward although there may be some trick to making sure you wire up the airbag properly again (or don't set it off!).

Lostbok there is something about the pedals that doesn't look right these are originals in mine...

Lostbok......I know the problems of B7 steering wheels into B6 that one i showed on ebay is a B7 so will have the same problems as I have with the air bag just wont have the hassle of connecting the multifunction element.

ah - okay, understood - there's some sort of adapter ring that allows you to fit a B7 wheel into a B6.... like I said, I paid somebody else to do mine, but it's very much possible - keep fishing, there's lots that have been done...

and for the airbag, it's not a problem - you only wire up the high impact airbag since that's the only sensors that the B6 has and that's the only airbag that the B6 normally has....

As Niknak said the pedals are different. The ones shown in the Ebay link are for a left hand drive car, but the advert does say for RHD, so it'll just be a generic picture. I bought a full set (pedals and dead pedal) new from Germany last year, all in delivered for £87 IIRC, so keep your eyes on ebay.de and go with the auction listing, rather than 'buy it now'. The same seller had both fixed price and auction. I made the listake of not realising they were LHD until the auction had finished, but the seller had access to both and spoke good English. If I can find his userid, I'll PM it to you. :icon_thumright:

There's one here for £600 fitted: LINKY.

Bit different to Lostbok's in that it doesn't have flat bottom, looks the same other than that though...?

Yes you are probably right, not as much as he paid though from memory.

I think the £600 is for a second hand wheel. Lostbok had a new flat bottomed wheel at a list price of £950. I say list as he got a discount as he had RNS-E fitted at the same time and he went to them. Lostbok has never revealed how much he actually paid. Perhaps his other half reads his posts!!:sly:
