In a Tardis!!
Need front's and might as well replace rears.

I'll be getting the car mapped in April, so need to tie this in with then really.

What ones do you have on your cars? Prices, and where you got them from!

The standard brakes i find are rubbish. I've heard lots about Ferrodo DS2500 pads but not much about discs.

Don't want to get calipers or a kit yet...i'm biding my time for that.

Thanks again....

Black Diamond grooved only work well.
Avois anything cross drilled, like the plague...they'll crack.
Dimpled are just bling tat, in my view.
Go with grooved only.

The Black Diamond stuff is reasonably priced, made of good metal and they don't warp easily.

i've bought the tarox g88 discs. pricey but im always paranoid about brakes so quite happy to spend the extra money. im also getting the ferodo pads fitted on the 14th so can keep you posted if you like

Please do...

Mine are absolutley pants and i don't trust them enough to do any sort of "spirited" driving now.

Thanks again both!

I have a set of braided front hoses, DS2500's and Motul 600 fluid on order from Badger 5 that I am hoping to get fitted next weekend (or maybe the weekend after). I haven't bothered getting hoses for the rear as the hose from the body to the rear arm is very short and the rear hose is one of those hybrid hard hose/flexible hose things and not sure there will be a decernable difference in changing those for the way I drive. Fronts will help though...

I do need to replace the rear discs at some point so may look to replace front and rear with Black Diamond grooved as I hear good things about them.

I ordered the black diamond grooved discs a few days ago, will let you know what I think once there fitted.

Tarox G88's are the best discs Ive ever used.

i think minty i got them after you recomended them in the first place

Got the Tarox ones in my sig, just over £500 I think for the lot from F1 in Brighton, those boys know they're stuff too! Awesome braking power, never had them fade on me yet and I brake hard and late all the time, standards used to fade after hitting the brakes a couple of times best upgrade I think you could ever do is replace the crap standard brakes!

So do the pads throw out less dust on better braking systems?? Or will i still be left with dirty wheels after 1 mile lol!

G

Can't really say as swapped shortly after getting the car so couldn't compare.

Would imagine its dependent on the compounds used by the manufacturers for each type/make of pad rather than saying better pads throw out more or less dust.

So do the pads throw out less dust on better braking systems??

Some do...some don't.
It depends on the compound.

Generally, the more aggressive the pad, the more dust it throws out as they are grinding the disc away.

Or will i still be left with dirty wheels after 1 mile lol!

Redstuffs are clean. But Redstuffs are crap.
DS2500s aren't too messy...but brilliant.

I have some Mintex Racing F4Rs (proper competition) pads at home...they are noisy, squeally...but so aggressive. They are mental...awesome.

But, if they get wet, the dust sticks to the wheels and side of the car so hard it'll take you 3 days with Wonder Wheels and a clay bar to get the rusty coloured mess off.
Hmm...

I'd suggest DS2500s. They are great pads, not noisy or messy.

Ess.

Again you're on top form. Thanks for the sound advice - unbias which is what i was after. I think i'll go for the DS2500s as you say the are a good all rounder and must be a marked improvement over the standards.

You've been following my detail threads have you with the comment about the 3 days, clay bar etc to get the mess off. That would kill me as my car is super clean.

Lol

Thanks Again

:sm4:Hi all, rather than make another thread about brakes i thought i would use this one,

I am in need of disks all round soon as they are getting a lip, i have been reading other threads about the DS2500 pads,

Im thinking of going with the black diamond grooved disks all round ,or the TAROX G88, if/can i combine these with the DS2500 pads? will there be that much difference over the oem setup i have at the mo? Does this sound good,

Will it be worth having good pads on the rear or will cheaper be ok?

And if this setup sounds good would it be worth changing my brake fluid? to another kind or add braided brake lines?

I never ever track just looking for better over oem setup, For a bit more money, also the Ds2500 say "for track" why is this?

Sorry for the questions im not very clued up on these and have been reading alot on here and thought this might sound an ok setup?cheers Oski

Either will work well with DS2500s.
Go for what's cheapest, as long as you stick to quality disc manufacturers.

Yes, there will be a big difference.
Also, remove the inner dist shields from the front discs...the brakes get very hot on an S3 - which is why the standard pads wilt. get rid of the shields and get more air in as DS2500s work harder and create more heat...so the additional cooling will help.

Will it be worth having good pads on the rear or will cheaper be ok?

You can go fitting huge rear discs and different callipers or more aggressive pads to the standard callipers...but on a car that is front engined and where the weight goes about 85% over the front under heavy braking...what's the point>
The rears are doing so little they'll just give the rear ABS more work to do.

I've never found the S3 needs better rear brakes, I've never found the standard rear brakes lacking...so leave them standard. Just fit standard pads...or some other reasonable quality pad...they don't have to be matched to the fronts.

And if this setup sounds good would it be worth changing my brake fluid? to another kind or add braided brake lines?

Braided lines will help, for sure. Especially if the standard lines are a few years old.Brake fluid also goes 'off' as it absorbs moisture...so change the lines if you want (on a road car...not that important to be honest) but make sure the fluid IS changed and kept fresh.

I never ever track just looking for better over oem setup, For a bit more money, also the Ds2500 say "for track" why is this?

Track pads can be hopeless until thet get some heat into them...so the warning is there to cover the maker.
DS2500s work from cold, so no problems there...yet as they are technically a 'track' pad, they have an extended temperature range so keep working long after the std pads have overheated and given up.

Black Diamond/Tarox discs with DS2500s and a change of fluid will give a nice improvement.
You'll be fine with those.

Thanks ESS Three! i aprichiate that info alot, i am pleased with that going for in the next few weeks going for the Black diamond grooved disk all round DS2500 pads on front, standard on rear new braided lines and flud change:icon_thumright: thanks again

Another vote for DS2500's here, I'm running them on 312mm black diamond discs and the stopping power is WAY better than the standard S3 312mm OEM setup. I'm yet to get my 312's to fade on the A3, and the cold bite is also fairly impressive.

On another note, Mine are on close to 30k now with no signs of wear on the discs and the pads are less than half worn!

Don't think there would be much in it to be honest, tarox are probably more expensive so material might be slightly better so last a little longer but doubt you'd notice any performance difference between the 2 at all.

So which would be better out of the two:

Black Diamond Tarox G88??

Thanks G

Hi MR G,im not to sure which are better Tarrox seem more£, i think im going to go with the blackdiamonds as recommended by ESS THREE,in a few weeks will let you know how they are,

cheers Oski

One site had the F2000 as part of a track day setup. Tarox big brake kits I believe come with them as standard so they may have a slight edge over the G88 but haven't seen any performance data to comfirm one way or the other.
Believe braking is more down to the pads than the discs anyway though.

Awaits Ess Three's wise words

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. Will be looking out for deals over the next few weeks.

Ive had both and I honestly believe Tarox are of a much better quality. I guess you get what you pay for.

I went through the dilema of what to do with my brakes last year, I nearly went all out at one stage with a Porsche 993 upgrade, but in the end I decided to just do a bit at a time and see how I got on. So I just replaced standard with Mintex discs, which is still relatively standard and fitted EBC yellow stuff pads (I know these arent everyone's cuppa), so far I'me very happy with this set-up, but I'm sure that next time I need to change something I will go one better. I think it's best to try things out for yourself, if you have the time and money. But, you always have Glen's experience to fall back on.

Yea.

The long and short of it all is from what i can see.....

The Black Diamonds are cheaper, in Glens experience these are great and after 3 sets he'd probably buy them again. Which is good, i doubt with a sorted S3 like Glens was, around a track for a few laps that he'd buy them again if the Blacks were not up to scratch.

Tarox as Glen said earlier, he'd warped a set, now i hate warped discs, they make the car feel really unstable, so in the interest of this i'll be going blacks.

I nearly.....bought the kit found here.

http://www.thettshop.co.uk/performance.asp?cat=6227&product=600522

Think it would bolt straight on and all i'd have to do is get some pads....DS2500's!!!

Still tempted by these to be honest as they look like they'll perform a little better. Maybe i'm wrong though. Should probably stick to the Blacks.

G

i thin k Mr G it would depend on what your planning to do with the car, ie track days hard driving etc. if not i doubt you'll see much difference with whats been recommended. Im getting my g88s and ferodo's fitted this saturday so will keep you posted. cant wait.!!

Well i want it mapped and the suspension sorted out fully. So i guess that means driving it (when i choose to) a little harder than i do now, the map will make the car quicker slightly so i guess better brakes would help the situation.

Keep me posted....it's easy to over compensate for new things when they are fitted as they are much better than the previous parts. Try to give an accurate description of what they feel/perform like.

Thanks again to all who posted here, it's giving me food for thought and definately narrowing down my choices, i'd have made mistakes and paid dearly for it.

My black diamond discs arrived, hopefully fitting them with my mate whose a VW tech Sat along with some standard Mintex pads and will be replacing the brake fluid.

Will report back. By the way Mr G I have a wicked contact for Black Diamond discs! Got mine for around £165 inc VAT and delivery! PM me if your interested, found him on ebay but he did a deal for me of ebay to save costs.... Proper gen discs straight from black diamond themselves.

Unfortunatly they dont do performance disc for my A4.

So ive bought some standard discs all round and a peformance engineer i know is going to groove them for me, this combined with red stuff pads and braided brake lines, plus super dot 4 brake fluid should make a hell of a difference.

Still not sure whether to bother with rear braided lines though!
