S3 Versus Focus RS

chris if your S3 is not near the pace of your RS then theres an engine issue somewhere

Animal, have you been out driving really?

OR have you been on Gran Turismo AGAIN :p

We all know you cant even do a 172 Clio ;) haha

I had an old nissan S13 (rear wheel drive) running at about 240bhp and I had a race with a focus RS, I whipped him around the round abouts but then he would catch up to me on the straights then back off loads coming up to the bends.
I think balls come in to it cos he should of ****** all over me! :salute:

:greyrs4:

My mate has a standard RS and had it on the rollers the other day and it made 212bhp exactly. My S3 is Revo'd and i wouldnt say i ****** all over him at all on a straight. I was creeping past him but i wudnt like to come up against a mapped one. We both have similar driving styles too. We're both going on the track at oulton park soon so we'll see how we get on there. Hopefully i'll have my suspension on by then coz otherwise i dont fancy my chances!!

I've had my S3 for almost a year now and I've only ever had one race opportunity, and that was against a 406 3.0 coupe and it beat me! Thats what made me start investigating my lack of power (new MAF).

But, if I go out in the girlfirends mini I find all kinds of cars that'd be fun to play with if I was in the S3 :wtf:

deece can completely relate to that!! when eve we're in the misus mini we see loads of cars

well done tim. always like a good read monday morning. do like the look of the old rs's though. nice presence like the 8l s3 i think. new rs looks an animal!

It's not all to do with straight performance.
It's all about anti theft potential, repair costs, security measures etc....just as much as how fast it is.

Why is an Integra Type-R a group 18?
Following your theory...it shouldn't be. It's got less power than either...and slower.
But it is...because it's rare bits and lack of available spares (like bodyshells - as I found out) make it expensive/impossible to repair properly.

A friend has an Integra Type R, which model are you refering too Ess? DC2 or 5??

My friends is an Import and i'll tell you, his car is very quick, it's standard and on a private road we did various tests, all of which proved one thing, his was way faster.

He really does know how to drive though (while i've less to prove) he is always in front by a fair margin too. Very under-estimated car and if you guys have the chance to play with one, an import, do so, you'll be very suprised at what the result is. The chassis on the Integra Type R DC2 was hailed the best FWD handing car ever made (by various motoring journalists though lol). If my car was re-mapped then i'd have maybe a slim chance at keeping with him.

DC2, UK 1999SpecR. #4024. (how sad is that...remembering the unique number?)

Brilliant cars...I loved mine.
Hard work to drive hard...but just soooo good.

On a dry day, on twisty roads, it would have murdered my S3 (equal drivers)
Even when re-mapped...the S3s chassis is so poor that you'd need to spend thousands to make one stick to a standard ITR.

Shame 99% of the dc2 drivers here are just honda vtak bandwagen jumpers and have no idea and no wish to find out how to "drive" them.

i think you have confirmed exactly what has been said in numerous posts previously....the only way i think you'd have a chance is straight line only, and i dont think you'd need to be mapped for that challenge... open to being proven wrong though

I was at the ring last year in my friends M3 evo (the old 90's model, sorry I dont know my BM's very well) which is stripped out and race prepared and we had a lot of trouble trying to shake off a DC5. My mate can drive and has done an 8:04 on a private day at the ring with the home straight open, bridge to gantry. We only lost him on the long straight sections.

Think it would need more than a map to keep with his DC2. It's at least 5 car lengths in front and gaining.

Ess...

You had a DC2?? Lovely aren't they. Such an under-estimated wolf....has suprised many. The last time he erm...lol raced someone was with three up against a Focus ST and we had the egde. Crazy little Honda's.

G

fair point mate but if hes 5 lengths in front of a mapped S3 there has to be something wrong with the S3 IMO....unless corners are involved

I'm itching to get mine Mapped and have a good bash at a standing start with him. Privately of course!

G

yeah tis well worth it fella...i wouldnt normally tune a car at all but once id driven a mapped S3, i had to have mine mapped

Is it "that" much better? How would a non mapped S3 fair against yours so say mine against yours lol.

I know i'm being anal about it but just to give me an idea, don't mean to sound Max Power, racing style, trying to justify to myself the £500 odd to get it done.

I'm liking MTM but not sure at £599+ the tw@t its a fair amount of money!

bet you wish you had mapped your A3 when you had that to !! :)

leggy....yeah mate :respekt:

G....if your not that into it go to revo or CC.... most popular on market and you can get it doenfor £300 on average

£300 all in?

How would my unmapped car fair against yours?? Much difference?

Thanks

It would be a pleasant difference...when I first had mine done I was shocked at how the turbo came in, although when bought it the maf was knackered so there was an even bigger improvement :) i'm not sure what part of the country your in but I would always highly recommend Jabba...

In fact, the first time I felt the turbo come in after the remap I was like a kid giggling...Lol. I thought...........I'm gonna love this car :w00t:

G, I waited four years before I got a custom remap done at APS last month, spent the ££££'s getting the suspension and wheels sorted beforehand. It's like I have new car... There really is a massive difference, not only in terms of power, better MPG as well...

Thanks for the advice all! Appreciate it.

Better MPG? Really?

I'm getting around 26mpg's now. Tottering about town mpg's more than 30 on the Motorway. I want to get my brakes sorted first then have a remap.

What spec is your car completely Maz? Suspension & everything.??

G

Ess...

You had a DC2??

I sure did.
I missed out in 1998 and waited nearly a year for one of the first 1999 ITRs. White with red. April 1999 I think it was.

Lovely aren't they.

Brilliant!

Such an under-estimated wolf....has suprised many. The last time he erm...lol raced someone was with three up against a Focus ST and we had the egde. Crazy little Honda's.

I did about 18 trackdays in mine...
Had Mugen ARBs on it, JDM dampers, Eibach springs, better pads, Mugen exhaust, JDM 16" wheels etc...used to run full slicks on the standard 15" wheels for trackdays (4 wheels ans slicks fitten in the boot with the parcel shelf down!)
Never missed a beat. Never used oil. Only it ate expensive tyres and brake pads for breakfast...and did under 10 MPG on track!

One of the best cars I've ever driven.

Sadly, I lost it on a wet corner and wrote it off.
Hit an embankment and it took to the air...landed heavy. Enough to do this:

I miss it.

Yes really, I couldnt believe it myself considering its much more rapid than before... I think there is a technical reason why better gearing perhaps - sure one of the experts here can explain.

Dont mean to hijack the thread but you did ask...

Suspension

H&R Springs
Defcon 2 Bushes
KW Tiebar
R32 Arbs

Think that's it for now, I havent stopped smiling since the map:yahoo:.

Cant see the pics at work sadly. Will look asap when i'm home Ess.

Sad that though mate (i wrote off an S3 with delivery mileage on it a few years back but it was a young ladies fault for pulling out on me), i love the DC2 though. Love to own one if its just for some fun!

So much out of a 1.8 engine it is unreal, chassis even a standard one is unparraleled in the Audi world. They sure knew what they were doing when they built it.

You can't say things like that around here!
The cotton-wool people will get upset...start telling you how it's 'rice' and has a bad interior.

Sure it was fairly basic inside.
Sure it wasn't that well finished - but it had the basics right. Recaro seats, Momo steering wheel etc. Great seating position and pedal feel.
Great engine, fantastic gearbox (in a different league to ANYTHING VAG have ever built) and decent, not-overly servo'd brakes.
It was light...and drove well. Very well...what a chassis.

Had I not written mine off, I would still have it.
I still fancy another...but most are abused at the hands of 'yoofs' now, sitting on heavy-assed 17/18" wheels, silly exhausts and cut down springs...so that's a no go.
No matter...I have the memories. :blownose:

Not a great deal of point discussiing the details of bhp and power to weight etc as its mostly down to the driver anyway.

On the twisties yeah, but it's hardly rocket science hammering your car through the gears on the straights lol

I too have a sweet spot for Red badged Hondas! The gear change was incredible. Superb throttle response, brakes and bullet proof engine. Though the Civic chassis wasn't a patch on the Integras.

I got sick of the high revs on the 50 mile daily commute though, so bought an M3!

LOL Ian "four spring dwarf technique" tickled me that.

Red badge honda's = "the ****" :p

Lol Ess very true. Blinkered approach! However i like rice and it's especially nice with a crispy beef dish! :D

Looks like this thread has been truly hi-jacked now so I might as well continue.

What's the DC5 like in comparison? I was thinking about one of these before I bought the S3 but decided on the Audi due to the cost of them plumeting.

I appologise to the Owner for the hi-jack.

"sorry dude".

On the other note, they are nice, very. They are tinny though and build is not like the S3/A3 but boy do they handle and go very well.

I'm not sure if all DC2's are like my friends, its not been messed with and has 200hp at the wheels, dyno proven. It keeps with Evo's (5 & 6) that he says he's "played with". lol.

I love it, but the revs frighten me. I've driven it and it's loud, not my cup of T but i do love sitting in the passenger seat.

G

A few years back when i was younger and didn't mind the revving i loved it but they are hard work every day. Sensitive (quick lock) steering and love to tramline but...

When you're in the mood and the road is right they're great. The stiff suspension and nature of the high rev power mean they're abit of a handful in the wet though.

My friend still has his DC5 and his cousin the new shape CTR. I dare say the S3 will hurt it in the wet (CC phase 1) but that DC5 used to give me some severe grief in the M3 in the dry, such was its huge level of grip.

Can't wait for round 3...S3 v DC5 this Aug at the Ring!
