Was driving along today and noticed that the engine was making a very tinny ticking noise.

It went away for a bit and then came back again and didn't stop until i pulled onto the driveway.

Only does it when your actually moving, if you dont move but rev the engine it doesnt do it.

Ive got a 2004 2.0TDI Sport with 92k on the clock, anyone got any ideas what it could be?

You can hear it at the very beginning of this video i just took

Anyone able to give me an idea?

Audi cant take a look until Tuesday but i dont want to be driving around if its gonna damage the engine

i may be able to help, i had i similar problem last year, the sound does it go away somethings and sounds normal? also when you rev the engine does the sound go away altogther?, and have you lifted the bonnet and try to see where the sound is coming from

it only starts when you're actually driving, if you are standstill in traffic, the noise goes away very quickly

i tried having a look but it went away too quick for me to listen to where it was coming from

ok see if you can do this, open the bonnet while engine is running, and see if the FAN BELT TENSISONER is "wobbling" alot, its on the left of the engine just where the fan belts are

if its wobbling alot than its actually the PULLY on the alternator thats runs with the fan belts, and its very common on our engine to lock up so they dont run smooth so it makes the fan belt tensioner wobble

but wouldnt it be running all the time? IE when the engine is on?

its only when the car is actually moving, seems to get a little louder when you let off the accelerator as well if that helps?

oh seems like a different problem to which i had, i am sure someone else would be able to help,
is your still under warrentry?

i would first to a alternator repair place, and ask them to have a look at the pully on the alternaotor that pulls the fan belt, for some reason i got a feeling it may be that, because mine is a 2004 for same as yours and used to make some very strange sounds, they can have one quick look and can tell if it is that, it may be a cheaper option before u go to audi, i think you need to first workout where the sound maybe coming from, maybe you can get someone to rev it while u listen under the bonnet

this is the thing though, it doesnt do it just from revving it at standstill

it only does it when your moving, as soon as you stop, it goes within 5 seconds so i cant even stop, jump out and take a look :keule:
