It's just that despite the vast sums of money Audi put into developing cars like the RS4, what we're basically saying with this thread is that the best car in the Audi range is a tuned VW Golf. Next stop the BMW dealer then!
The idea that in theory tuning the S3 up to be the fastest car in the whole Audi range would make it the best is lunacy. Potentially Audi wasted their time with the RS4, S5, RS6, R8 etc etc. Then again they probably thought Audi buyers were a bit more decerning than to only look at 1/4 mile figures.

Just to enrage people further... If it's a comparison of £ to driver thrills you want (bang for your buck). Forget buying ANY Audi and buy a tuned BMW 135i because it'll kill them all. 3.0 twin turbo, RWD, over 300 BHP as standard, brilliant chassis. It's butt ugly but if you're only bothered about performance figures then go buy one.

PHN80, I'd suggest following on from your ideas, that an tweaked Evo FQ360 would be a good choice if it was only performance that was improtant.
Half the cost of the S3 that it will run rings round dynamically any day of the week...

I'm gonna get flamed here i know it but the new S3....where are the body lines? Where are the arches that the older S3 has? It's tooo timid and therefore if and only if i had the money to spend 30k on a car, there would be one choice for me and i think it's obvious what it is!

Fella you're spot on, I had my S3 for 7 years & when I saw new one I was like, is that it, its an sline *** huh, its just styling wise just boring to a degree, I mean yeah ok I've stuck bodykit on my sport but given it made mine look alot better overall but S3 IMHO should have better sportier lines, bigger arches like the RS4 does, slightly wider stance on the road, pity but guess they were banking engine did the talking which from all accounts it seems to have done, but to compare S3 & RS4 I think is silly, different cars overall no?? But comparing S3 mapped to the hills with standard RS4 think is wrong cause then you have to think ok tuned modded RS4 what would that do to the S3, many different angles really, but the RS4 avant is sex on wheels, stunning car, really is & as much as I was let down by my S4 B6 it really was a stunning car, just tad heavy overall, pity MPG was so bad, really was

Well i was sticking to German 'prestige' marques for an example but yes you're right. Lets be honest, price wise an RS4 is in the same ball park as a Nissan GTR.... Don't think we need to bother comparing the two!

Badge snobbery? To a point...Absolutely. I'm a product of the consumer crazed 21st Century. As are most people in this forum who could have saved thousands and bought a Golf. Those 4 rings are designer bling. The A3 is a superior final product but still technically a Golf.
Hence.... Audi put very little into developing the A3/S3. Just polished a Golf and rebadged it Lets be honest). Couldn't even be ***** to restyle the bodywork of the S3. The RS4 on the other hand is a purposed designed and built performance tool. A whole new quattro drive train was developed just for that car. Some appreciate it, some don't.

To be honest i think all we can conclude from this is that for people who can't afford an Audi 'RS' car, a tuned S3 is a nice alternative and can reach similar performance figures.

How many people with £55K burning a hole in their pocket would buy an S3 and tinker with it rather than buying an RS4? (to be fair the RS5 will be the replacement, similar price and will have the same quattro system).

My eyes totally glaze over as soon as people start talking about tuning the living crap out of cars. I just like 'nice cars' designed by professionals the way they were intended. It's cool that people are so passionate about tinkering with their cars though. Each to their own fellas.

I Really am let down & disappointed by the major lack of difference between the new A3 and the new S3. Audi lost the overall point when making the new shape imo of course.

Yes it does look stunning and yes it does have nice lines but Audi Sport appeal it does NOT have. The front end is really really nice, as is the back, although i think if they put the sportback rear end on the non sportback S3 it would be wayyyyy nicer, subtle differences make S Audi's all the more desirable. The same thing can't be said about the sides though. The lines are completely lost on the new shape, no flared arches, no agressive stance unless you are looking at the front.

The above is all that is stopping me from getting into a new S3. I'm waiting for Audi to realise that S means big fat bodies and nice lines again before i commit to buying another.

RS models are a little out of my league money wise which is why i'll wait till i am in a better position to even contemplate another car.

For me my MK1 - facelifted S3 is gonna stay a while!
